8/8/08 Summer Olympics!

Happy Friday!

I’m feeling a lot better about things this morning after a good night’s sleep. Tonight should be an easy and quick night, as we are doing chocolate! Tempering chocolate to make fans and cigarettes and also making truffles. I’ve never made truffles so I’m going to have to research the recipe before I go but already I’m feeling a ton better about it because I feel more rested. It’s crazy how different things appear when you are over tired. Of course since I was so tired and stressed last night it took me about two hours to fall asleep, but once I did (with the help of tylonel pm…my vice), I stayed asleep and woke up refreshed at 6:40 ready to exercise!

And today is the start of the Olympics!!!!!!!!!!! I have more than a minor obsession with the Olympics that has lasted years and years. When I was a kid I ALWAYS watched every summer and winter Olympics on tv (and especially the opening ceremony!). I went through the stage of wanting to train for the US gymnastics team but mainly I’ve just loved watching it and all the little “pre-show” stuff. I look forward to it every two years and every morning in the gym I’ve been watching Matt and Meredith live from Beijing on the Today show getting ready for it. Actually, I was supposed to BE THERE right now! It was the plan for Ryan’s family and I to go there this year because they have friends that live out there and they invited us. However, flights ended up being waaaay too expensive and with my school right now being so crazy, we just couldn’t go. Bummer :(. Ryan is taping the opening ceremony for me though tonight so I can watch it tomorrow! Yay!

Okay, anyways, on to my food! This morning when I woke up at 6:40 I had a piece of flax & fiber toast with a smear of peanut butter. Here was my gym routine this morning. I did triceps, chest and back.

2 minutes running on treadmill to warm up

Triceps routine: do all three exercises with no rest in between then take a 1 minute break in between sets. 5 reps of close-grip push-up on the bench, 10 reps of lying triceps extension (with 20 lbs), 20 reps of rope pressdown (25 lbs). I went through this routine three times to do three sets of each exercise. I was feeling it by the end for sure!

3 sets of bench press (2 15 lb weights)—12 reps each

3 sets of cable row (50 lbs)—12 reps each

3 sets of pushups—10 reps each

3 sets of back exercises using the cable machine (15 lbs)—12 reps eachΒ

My arms feel like jelly! When I got home I made a bowl of cottage cheese oats (1/2 cup cottage cheese mixed with pre-made steel cut oats and a spoonful of almond butter) with a cup of fresh blueberries and raspberries. This was the best combo yet!

And for lunch today I packed a hummus and turkey sandwich with 2 tbsp hummus, 3 slices organic smoked turkey breast, 2 slices flax and fiber bread, tomato and spinach. I packed carrot sticks, a kiwi and a plum on the side. Disregard the string cheese. I decided against it after the picture was taken!

For a snack I packed a deliciously messy banana and almond butter.

Anyone have fun plans for the weekend? Ryan and I are hoping the weather is good because we want to go diving on Sunday (we are both SCUBA certified). It’s another hot one today!

We are planning to go hiking because the heat is supposed to be a little milder this weekend. We have been so busy and the heat has been unbearable so we haven’t been hiking at all this summer πŸ™

Hey Jenna – Just wondering, do you heat the oats up first and then add the cottage cheese? Or mix it together and then reheat??

Also, I feel your pain on the olympics. I work doing high class travel/concierge stuff and for the past 2 months have been doing nothing but plan people’s trips to Beijing!! If anyone needs any restaurant recommendations there by any chance – well I’m your girl – ha!

    Ryane,

I heat up the oats first (with a little water) and then add the cottage cheese, almond butter and fruit! I WOULD LOVE to eat at a traditional Chinese restaurant in Beijing!

For all of yall that haven’t read it, read “The Last Chinese Chef”—-AMAZING book! πŸ™‚

As a huge Olympics fan as well, I share your excitement! I cried when the Women’s soccer team won the gold in 2006. And when Carly Patterson won the all-around gold for gymnastics that same year… (You get the idea…)
It sucks you couldn’t go; that would have been awesome!!
Weekend plans=La Nouba at Downtown Disney…. See my blog for all the deets!! πŸ˜‰

Jenna I went to high school in Boca Raton and got certified my junior year. I went diving alot back then but haven’t gone in years (i’m 36) – so I’ve been thinking about taking a refresher course and getting back into it. Although I live just outside Washington, DC now and not much diving around here πŸ™‚ But it’s something I’ve always been glad I did!

Have a great time a good luck with chocolate tonite!!

My sister and I worked in Beijing when we were in college and if you watch tonight, my sister worked with Li Ning, the former gold medalist who will ight the olympic cauldron tonight! Very cool. His company designed all of China’s uniforms and he gave my sister one of the uniforms. Hopefully I can get her to wear it out to a bar tonight! (Just Kidding)
Though I wish I was like andrea and going to a Jack Johnson concert tonight!

I’ve sadly never really gotten into the whole Olympics deal. I should really try to watch them this time around!

Going diving sounds SO much fun. I really hope you get to do that, I would love to be able to do that! Not that there is anywhere remotely close to me where I could actually go diving…sigh.

    Have a great weekend!

Like you, I looked forward to the Olympics. It’s one major event, just like the world cup (soccer). The opening ceremony was amazing and I think the Chinese did an excellent job in organizing the Olympics. They are so creative and meticulous.

Your cottage cheese oats look amazing and I must try that cocoction soon. It’s a pity that cottage cheese costs way too much where I live. And of course, bananas and nut butters are my favourite!

Enjoy your weekend! I know I will enjoy mine. πŸ™‚
