Sunny Sunday Run

Happy Sunday!

Boy, I was ready to run this morning!!!! I woke up at around 5:00 with a weird burst of energy and thought it was 7:30 and time to run…..but then I looked at the clock and realized I was 2 1/2 hours early and I fell back asleep.

I eventually woke up again around 7:00, ate half a carrot cake clif bar (the BEST kind ever!!!) and hit the road.

It was a perfect morning! The sun just starting to come up and it was probably only 80 degrees. I had told myself I really wanted to run a 5K this morning, just to see where I stand on time. I decided, by the way, NOT to use the Galloway method for my training this time. I want to work on endurance and then speed.…if I have to walk, I’ll walk, but I don’t want to plan it. Well, I ran for 15 minutes straight this morning!!! That might not seem like a big deal to most of you experienced runners, but its actually the longest time I’ve ever gone without taking a walk break! I felt very proud of myself!!! I did walk a couple times this morning after the 15 minute mark, but each break was more like 30 seconds and they were few and far between. It was definitely my strongest run to date. Someday I’ll get to where I can run 3 miles without walking at all….just gotta keep at it I guess!

Here are the stats:

Time: 40 minutes (including 7-8 minute cool down walk at end)

Average Heart Rate: 182

Max Heart Rate: 201

Calories: 450

Distance: 3.2 miles

I walked for the last 7 minutes or so as a cool down around the lake at my apartment, so that’s included in the 40 minute period. I’m not SO worried about my speed at this time as I am keeping my endurance up. I’d rather go slower and take less walk breaks than go fast, get an awesome time, but totally burn myself out. I aim for 10 minute miles because I’ve found that’s what really works for me! I think my pedometer might be sort of off though. I’ve thought this for awhile now because its one of those cheap little things that you put on your belt. I used it all last year to train and then when I ran my 10K I was amazed at how “short” the race really seemed and I got an amazing time that I had never even come close to before. I also heard that you usually burn 100 calories/mile and so if I burned 450 calories I feel like I should have gone further than only 3.2 miles (??!). Something about it just doesn’t seem right…..does anyone use a great pedometer that they recommend???

After I got back home, stretched and had a HUGE glass of water, I made pancakes for breakfast! I used this mix:

img_2074.JPG

I did a single serving: 1/3 cup mix, 1 tsp canola oil and about 1/2 cup soymilk. It produced two large, yummy pancakes! I topped them with 1 tbsp pure maple syrup, 5 sliced strawberries and a huge banana. I also had a half cup of fage on the side for extra protein.

img_2073.JPG

I think pancakes could just be the perfect post-run meal! YUM!

I then had some coffee and iced my leg to ward off that old injury. The last thing I need is to have it spring back up before training even starts!

Today I’m having lunch with Miss Caitlin of See Bride Run!!! We are going to my faaaavorite lunch spot here in Orlando: Yellow Dog Eats. I’ve been staring at the menu for weeks now and have, of course, already picked out my meal. I’ll keep you all in suspense though and let you see pictures this afternoon!

Have a wonderful day!

    (hk here 🙂 )
I have a crappy belt-clip pedometer, as well, and I usually just wear it for ball-park estimates. I also have the polar f6 watch, which I find to be more accurate regarding numbers, calories, distances..etc. Since I’m not too worried about calories..etc, I tend to use the “mapmyrun.com” site to just find a route.

Have fun with Caitlin, sounds great!

    hk,

Thank! I’ll have to check that site out. I have a polar f5 (I think its an f5?) and I’m pretty sure all the numbers on it are accurate.

I also recommend mapmyrun.com if you cannot see the little streets/running paths around your house (like me!) then switch the map view to hybrid and you will see all sorts of walking and running paths. It is sort of like google-earth for running!

Congrats on your 15 minutes straight. It’s really ahrd to run outdoors and now that you did that, it will get easier and easier.

Have fun with Caitlin. Can’t wait to see what you choose.

Congrats on your 15 minutes jenna!… but is it really the longest you’ve ever gone? Because i think I remember you saying that when you are on the treadmill, you run for about 20 minutes straight without the galloway method.

I can run muuuch longer on the treadmill than outside!! This was the longest I’ve gone running outside without walking. It’s sooo different I find!

Good job on the run this morning! I agree that running outside is quite a bit harder! But it’s sooooo much better than the boring old treadmill! I also use mapmyrun.com. I don’t have a pedometer or HRM, so without it I really don’t have much of an idea on how far I’ve run. Although if you get sidetracked and take random little trails and get sort of lost like I did this morning, then it’s hard to go back and recreate the run on the site… 🙂 It’s a great tool though, for sure!

The 100 cal/mile estimate is pretty inaccurate, especially for a girl your size, J. That average is based on something like 150-pound male.

My Garmin estimates me at about 80 cals/mile.

I really, really recommend a Garmin, but it’s quite expensive for a good one. Maybe you can find a used one on Amazon and try that out? It’s nice to be able to just take off without mapping a route, but to still know exactly how far you went. It also breaks down each mile to speed (and calories), so you can have fun with that.

You sounded like you started your Sunday off on the right foot for sure! Haha, I couldn’t resist 😉 . But seriously though, that’s great you could go for that long, you’re definitely keeping me motivated and determined to improve on my own skills, thanks for the great example! I am so excited to hear about lunch. Although I guess I don’t know either of you 🙂 you and Caitlin sounds like you’ll get along great and it’s always fun to get together with bloggers in the “real world. ” Hope you have a wonderful Sunday because of it!

Jenna, i really really agree with M. I just purchased a garmin 405 and yes while it is expensive, its really the best piece of running equipment i’ve ever had. It is very accurate and its also kinda fun to use!!! Check it out! A X-mas gift perhaps??? :O)

Great on the 15 min!! You are so there my friend!!

Congrats on 15 min. straight! I have been running for several years and that is exactly how I started out. I would run for as long as I could and take walking breaks, when needed.

I LOVE my garmin… I ran a half-marathon in April and I’m running a full in October- I purchased the newest model a couple months ago and I think it was worth every cent! I love the freedom it gives me… And when you get up to 15+ mile runs, you don’t want to mess with mapping routes.

    There’s a 405?! I have the version prior to that one. (305? 310? whatever.)
I didn’t know that it had been updated.

oh wow — i just posted on my blog (see today’s entry) about the Polar RS200sd speed/distance/HRM tracker that i bought today! it has a foot pod to measure distance/speed as well as a heart rate monitor. i had a garmin (201) but found it very frustrating in our area — it ALWAYS lost signal, often for miles at a time!

while i haven’t gotten it in the mail yet (obvi since i bought it today) i will definitely write a full review of the polar once it comes.

as for the heart rates, there is lots of individual variation. 201 is pretty up there though, probably close to your max!

Hey Jenna, I dont know if you just missed my question from last night, or if you didnt get a chance to ansewr, but I thought Id just ask it again (anyone else feel free to help out!) I usually dont get the chance to run untill after dinner, so Usually I eat at 630, wait an hour, then go running (3-4 miles) When I get home, I always make myself eat somthing regardless of wether Im hungry or not, but often times this little snack will keep me full all the way through morning, making me not even the slightest bit hungry for bfast. For example, last night I ate 1/2 a banana, a tsp of PB and some dry cereal all mashed and mixed together, and then wasnt hungry for Bfast this morning till about 10.

Does this ever happen to you or have you ever had this type of schedule. Any suggestions or lighter things to eat somtimes Ill have yogurt or milk with cereal, but same problem.

Thanks for any advice, Awsome job on the 15 mins!

I think a time trial to see where you stand is an excellent idea. And good job!

100 cal/mile is an average, probably based on the average male, so unfortunately you will burn less.

Yeah, I wish there was a cheap pedometer out there that could do the job correctly.

Your caloric burn also depends on how much muscle mass you have! And since you’ve def increased yours recently, that could be relative, maybe?

I don’t ever wear an hrm and have never, but I’ve heard that the “Polar F4” or that’s at least what I think it’s called is like THE hrm 😉 I’ve also heard it’s purreeettttty pricey… You could probably/MOST DEFINITELY snag one off of ebay! 🙂

thanks for the suggestions guys!!! I DO have a Polar F4 and looove it. I pretty much trust the numbers for the most part. I’ve always had a high caloric burn for my workouts for some reason and my heart rate was quite high this morning (partially due to the heat and also to the fact that I was trying my hardest NOT to walk and just to keep going even when I was tired).

I am OBSESSED with mapmyrun.com….I have been playing on it for an HOUR now!! I can’t believe that I am just now finding this…so long crappy pedometer—I don’t need one when I can map it out here! thanks SOOOO much for recommending this!!!!!!!

I love mapmyrun.com too! It’s such a great resource. So do you think you are going to stick with the Polar F4, Jenna? Do you recommend it? I’m half marathon training and it would be nice to track calories and HR while training.
