Lunch

A Breath of Fresh Air

Oh my goodness, I’m having such a lovely day!!! First of all—my yoga class this morning was phenomenal. Once every 2 months, my yoga studio puts on a 90 minute Ashtanga yoga class that goes through the entire primary series. It’s much more “hard core” than the classes I usually take there and is more advanced. Today I felt very powerful as I moved through the postures and after class my yoga instructor actually pulled me aside to tell me what a great practice I had.

So, I thought I deserved something special! I FINALLY (why it took me so long I have no idea) went to the Dandelion Community Cafe & Teahouse for lunch here in Orlando. And let me tell you…it was nothing short of amazing. I felt at home in this city for the first time since I moved here in October because this was the type of place I would frequent most days when I lived in Charleston. I guess Charleston is more hippy-friendly than Orlando! Anyways, I walked into this brightly colored little house and was instantly greeted by not only the most friendliest of people, but by also wall upon wall of organic teas! Heaven! They had a bakery case at the register filled with vegan sweets and although I wanted one so very bad, I resisted because I knew I had cookies at the house and was on a budget! EVERYTHING on the menu was calling to me but I finally went with the  “Bean There, Done That” in a whole wheat wrap. This wrap was mouth watering amazing…the best wrap I might have ever had. Seriously. It was loaded with beans, tomatoes, corn, red onion and soy feta (which was actually so freakin’ good!) and marinated in a zesty cilantro ginger dressing. The wrap came with a couple sesame seed crackers and a small scoop of their infamous hummus, which had hemp seeds on top and was divine. I enjoyed a hot mug of “World Peace” tea (herbal tea with chamomile, rose hips, lemon and orange) that was sweetened with agave nectar. Needless to say, I licked my plate clean and now I feel so great and re-energized for the day! How’s that for a Saturday morning?! I will most def. be back to this community cafe….

Kinda random question… But I know a lot of runners frequent this blog… I’m training for a half-marathon, so I’ve been running more (10 miles today, my longest run ever!) Those that run, do you count calories to ensure you’re eating enough? Would you increase calories on a day you’re running 6+ miles? Curious because I thought I would be sooo hungry today and I’m really not… I think running that far kinda reduced my appetite. Any thoughts?

    Sarah,

I used to be a long distance runner – 10 miles on average 4 to 5 times a week. I also noticed my appetite would go down the day of a long run but it is SO important to eat enough to compensate for all that exercise. I noticed that on days when my appetite was low I would end up ravenous the next day and ended up hungry every 2 hours or so because I didn’t eat enough the previous day. You def. need to up the calories when you run such a long distance. Assuming you are at a healthy weight, I would increase the calories by about 300 to 400. For example, if you eat around 1700 calories on an average day…try to get in about 2100 calories on the day of a long run. Being properly nourished is also very important for effective runs. You’ll have more energy when you properly fuel your body.

I am so jealous of you and Kath for finding such cute cafes that offer so many healthy and great looking food! I cannot find anything like that where I live in long beach, california. How do you find them? does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi sarah, I just ran a half marathon in the fall. What I did worked really well for me. I maintained my weight my throughout the whole training process and after the race. Just trust your body! When your hungry eat and when youre not dont. Just try to eat health and clean whenever possible. But the nice thing is you can splurge a little more especially on the week before the race! Just dont think about it too much.

Awww, ya’ll are too sweet – thanks for all the compliments on our cafe. Great places to find cool cafes are happycow.com and localharvest.org or just google any combinations of the words: healthy organic vegetarian raw restaurant and your city’s name & you’ll usually find one!
