A Sad Tale, Part II

by jenna on September 24, 2010

Remember when this happened?

I do. And guess what? It just happened again.

Today, I was actually parked in a public parking lot with lots of other cars when it happened. I had gone out for a two hour hike and hidden my wallet and watch in the car, just in case. The area was well lit and no one (that I noticed) saw me leave the vehicle. I never would have thought someone would actually violently break into a car in the broad light of day, in a public place….but that’s what I found when I got back.

Luckily, they didn’t find my wallet but they did take the watch my mother gave me when I turned eighteen.

Above all though, I just feel so violated….again. Watches and car windows are replaceable, but I can’t stand the fact that someone actually smashed my window and was crawling around inside.

I’m going to stop whining now. Thanks for listening to my second sad tale….at least it’s Friday!

Omg I am soooo sorry Jenna! I have had my car broken into twice in Chicago and was also the victim of a home invasion and subsequent violent crime. The feeling of VIOLATION is huge when these things happen; it’s a sadness, a darkness, and a feeling of, well, just violation, that one carries with you for a long time. I am soo, soo, veryyyy very sorry for you. And of course, for the watch.

Major hugs and peace. And good luck dealing now, with the cleanup, the car insurance claims, the police reports, ugh…you don’t need this!

:)

Last summer, some kids thought it would be fun to throw a cinder block at my car when it was parked right in front of my house. Nothing was stolen but the repairs were expensive and yes, it really does feel like a gross violation. I’m so sorry this happened to you! I remember how awful it felt. Hang in there and indulge in a wonderful dessert this weekend.

Ugh and even after you hid everything!? I’m so sorry! I totally hide stuff all the time, maybe I’ll have to start locking it in the glove box. I’m paranoid like that.

The worst part when my window was broken is that they stole something worthless, but I end up paying $150 for a new window. Guess that goes on my karma tab?

Same thing happened to me two weeks ago… they took my mothers (old) cell phone and *I think* a pair of Forever 21 fake diamond earrings–though it’s possible I just lost them. ;-)

I was in a parking garage THAT I PAID FOR at a concert. I try to justify it by saying I got such a great deal on the tickets (underface value) that if you add in the car repair cost to the tickets–I only over spent like $30…but still!

The crazy part is my laptop was in the trunk–but they never went back there!

The ride back home was so COLD!

Ugh, sucks.

Get yourself a viper car alarm….If you have an iphone they have an app that you actually use your phone as your key to unlock/lock the car and I believe it will let you know if the alarm is going off(and you can lock the car no matter where you are)…..and get the person who installs the alarm to put extra horns so that it is ridicuosly loud inside the car when the alarm goes off…such that you couldn’t stand to be in the car when the alarms is going off. My hubby does that for a living and both are cars are so loud inside it’s intolerable to be in/near them when the alarm goes off

First of all, how shitty. Gah, people need to get real hobbies.
Second, the first thing that popped into my head is – maybe this wasn’t an accident. First time it happened, maybe. Second, seems a little suspicious. Now, I would never ever tell you what to share or what not to share on your blog because I freakin adore it… but there are some real creepy people out there. I know what kind of car you drive, what town you live in and of course what you look like. Anyone that lives in that particular area could easily target you out.
I am sure you have gone back and forth on the whole privacy issue with your blog. It just sucks that there are people out there that could be so heartless and cause pain to honest, good hearted individuals.
Just be safe, Jenna. Hope your weekend turns around!

It just feels gross to know that someone else was *^^%#ing around with your car. When my car was recovered after it was stolen, it had someone else’s clothes, hair, cigarette butts…. Just gross. And, like you, I *bought* the car myself so it’s like a double blow because you work so hard for it. Violated is the perfect word for it.

Often people who do something like this (especially in broad daylight) are very desperate, probably not too smart, and regardless of how many breaks they get, they WILL eventually trip themselves up. Sadly, this is a very common occurrance in Montreal- especially if you’re in the downtown area. I never leave anything in my car ever just in the off-chance my car will be broken into.
Maybe you should consider a car alarm? It won’t prevent a broken window but it will prevent anyone from sticking around to see what’s inside after they’ve broken it?

Oh my gosh, so sorry! I can’t believe this happened to you again. :( It truly amazes me (in a horrible way) what some people will do in broad daylight. A couple months ago we were walking in a shopping plaza in the middle of the day, and this man tries to get in this old woman’s car (she was in her eighties). Apparently he couldn’t move her fast enough or something, and he ended up taking mace and spraying her in the face and stealing her purse and driving off. Who steals a purse and sprays mace in the face of an over eighty-year old woman in broad daylight!? Good news is, they caught the idiot. But still. People are crazy.

I’m so sorry this happened to you – again. I hope that these awful occurrences have not left a bitter taste in your mouth for Sonoma county. It really is a great place to live, as you know, but Santa Rosa has gotten a little rough around the edges lately. Whenever I go for a walk or hike in Anandel, I try to hide my purse the best I can, but that won’t stop someone from doing to me what they did to you.
I feel terrible about your watch….people can be so heartless.

Awww, hugs! This happened to me twice in the same week when I first moved to California. It is a terrible feeling! Don’t let it bring you down, there are still good people in this world :)

I am so sorry to hear that. It happened to me in college. Now if I leave anything valuable (which is rare) I put it in my trunk and then lock it with the key which is a safety feature so you can’t open the trunk from the latch inside if the car is broken into. I hope this helps for next time, but I know you will always remember that watch your mother gave you. :(

Jenna,
I agree with all the sympathetic comments, what a terrible thing. As a lifelong Bay Area resident, I always thought you live in a safe area, that is Santa Rosa is not known for its crime rate.
Anyway, I tend to agree witht the post about your public persona and your blog. There are definitely strange people out there, maybe someone is stalking you. It can’t hurt to be overly cautious, talk to the police about the possibilty.
Take care, mom of 2 daughters :-)

I’m sorry. It really is too bad that things like that have to happen to good people! *big frowny* Wish I could hand you a piece of the rustic carrot coffee-cake I baked this morning, and make it all better! :)
Love,
Cathy B.

Sorry to hear about your car, that blows. :(

I believe someone would do it though.

I lived in Pacifica, CA when I was a kid. One day my mom told me to go out and clean our car. I can’t remember why. But I cleaned up the whole thing and while I was in there, I found a handful of change. Our middle console in the front seat had change holder spaces, so I just put the change in there. Sure, it was visible, but I was 12 and thought no one would break in for 47 cents.

I was wrong. No more passenger side window for us. :(

Hope your weekend goes much better!

I’m so sorry, but I agree w/ the posters who mentioned your lack of privacy due to your blog. Please don’t leave valuables in your car, and espec be careful when you are out hiking — don’t hike alone! Take care Jenna.

wow, sorry to hear this! time to invest in an alarm system? at least that would make them leave quickly. sorry you lost your watch. i have had things stolen from me, and i agree. it’s not the stuff gone that really bothers you. it’s the fact that someone feels like they have the right to take your stuff w/o consequences. it makes me really angry. i hope your weekend has gotten better.

I’m so sorry, that really stinks! Someone broke into my car at the gym several months ago, they literally stole my lunch and ruined my day.
Just know that their life is not as wonderful as yours and you will move on and keep being a wonderful person despite this incidence. So sorry girl.

Ever thought of becoming a minimalist? :/

This is mind boggling, as you live in what I’ve always thought was a safe, affluent part of No. Cali. Perhaps you should live vicariously through the movie “Man on Fire”.

Wow! I’m just reading this post but I can’t believe is the second time in such a short span that your car was broken into, I don’t think my family in New York has so many issues…maybe you should invest in a car alarm?

I’m so sorry this happened to you! I was visiting San Francisco this weekend and someone stole my wallet from my purse (that was hanging from my shoulder). I was just crushed, and freaked out about how I was going to get back on the plane to come home to Indiana without my ID.
Thankfully, everyone I dealt with was wonderful, I’m home in Indiana as I type this and all I have to do is replace a few things.
I’m so sorry about your watch. That is not replaceable :(
