Lunch

A Trip to France

Hi everyone!

Don’t ya just love drinking wine on Wednesday mornings?! Makes the week go a whole lot quicker I think…! ๐Ÿ™‚ Today in class we tasted four French white wines: a Chablis (chardonnay), a Vouvray (chenin blanc), a Sancerre (sauvingon blanc) and a Pinot Gris. I liked the Vouvray the best, which is a 100% Chenin Blanc. We were each given one ounce pours of each wine but I didn’t finish any of them—just took three sips of each. The first sip we swished around in our mouth and then immediately swallowed, the second sip we sucked in air at the same time and the third sip was had after a bite of cheese. It was FUN!

So, I’ve decided I really really really REALLY love Wine Class. Actually I’m sort of obsessed with it. It combines my favorite things—history, travel and, um, wine. I loooove learning about the different regions and the way the grapes are made. It’s so interesting to me! I sort of had this “a-hah!” moment in class today where I thought to myself, “wow I could see myself getting totally into this and doing it for a very long time”. So……I’m seriously thinking about starting to study for my Sommelier Certification after I graduate school. It would take a ton of time (think years and only 20% pass the final exam) and studying but it would be very cool to have and, apparently, you can make some big bucks. Not many females do it and there’s actually only 7 women in the country that hold the title of Master Sommelier! How freakin’ cool is that?!

Anyways, when I got home from class I had this for lunch:

Two slices of toasted whole wheat bread with 1/2 cup cottage cheese, cinnamon and preserves. I also had a morningstar farms sausage and a ripe plum (and a bite of an oatmeal bar for dessert!). I really liked this combo!

I’m going to the gym in about an hour after I digest, working on my wine project (and typing out notes) and then tonight I’m going out to Thai food with Caitlin and Megan, another blog reader! SO excited about that!!!!

I would be obsessed with wine class as well! It sounds so informative. I think the idea of being a sommelier is intriguing – I’ve totally thought about trying to do it… hmm, would definitely be veryyy interesting!

I met a master sommelier last year when planning a promo event for yellowtail and he was soooo passionate about the wines. It took him forever to put together a tasting menu with the restaurant we were holding the event at because he wanted everything to be perfect.
I think that’s totally something I’d like to do and would see you as being great at!

I think you should go for it. Then all your wine drinking could be “research.”

Everyone I know in the wine business LOVES it. I’ve also noticed that people tend to hold multiple roles over their career…sommelier, wine rep, distributer, merchant. There are definitely lots of options! I’ve learned so much about wine from my wine friends. Sancerre is definitely my all time favorite!

Hi! I am a new reader to your blog and absolutely love it! I am working on the 2nd level for my Sommelier Certification. As a wine rep, I took the Intro Sommelier Certification and learned so much. The level I am working toward now is supposed to be tough (I believe there are a couple blind tastings!). I would highly recommend working towards your Sommelier Certification-it is lifetime knowledge that you can always use. Vouvray is one of my favorite French whites too! But, Sancerre is so perfect with goat cheese…match made in heaven ๐Ÿ™‚

Hey Jenna I’ve been reading your blog quite sometime now but I rarely comment. Just wanted to tell you that you were profiled in my schools newspaper today (UVA). You were quoted a few times so I assume you’re aware. Unless your words were taken directly from the blog. Just wanted to let you know what an inspiration you are for all young women, you epitomize a healthy and balanced lifestyle!

The sommelier certification would definitely be a lot of fun and hard work. I met a fantastic sommelier at a restaurant in Boston a few months back and he was great to talk to. He also worked as their beverage manager and had gotten the Masters in Gastronomy from the Cordon Bleu in Australia. He was a really nice guy. I’ve been contemplating taking some wine courses at my alma mater (Boston University) that are taught by two master sommeliers, but I think I am going to hold out for the cheese course this spring. Is it something you could do while working?
