Buns In The Oven

by jenna on January 6, 2009

Hahaha buns as in ROLLS =)

I hope your Tuesday is going well. I received some less than stellar news this morning that I have to have some minor surgery done on Thursday morning but I’m trying not to let it get me down. I’ll still be participating in my yoga weekend (hopefully!!) but just will be restricted to a soft food diet for a few days and plenty of rest. Good thing I got just got the vitamix, right?!

In regards to my bread, I decided to make walnut sourdough rolls instead of loaves this time. I weighed each piece out to 2 oz and they are proofing right now….I’ll be baking them off at 1:00! They are a beautiful purple color because of the oil in the walnuts. I can’t wait to tear into one!! I made them into rolls instead because they are reminiscent of these AMAZING hazelnut rolls I used to buy at a tiny Paris boulangerie when I lived there. Mmmmm I can still taste them……..

After shaping the rolls, I settled down to do a 60 minute morning flow from YogaDownloads. I had just downloaded it and was pleasantly surprised at how advanced it was—-there was a part at the end dedicated to inversions (my favorite!!) and working on handstand, which I definitely have not mastered yet. I took the time to work further on my forearm balance and finally was able to get myself up and STAY up without the help of a wall. It felt wonderful!

For lunch I had tuna salad on a tomato wrap. I used 1 pouch light tuna, about 2 tbsp-ish light canola oil mayo, 2 stalks celery and a pinch of curry powder. I also threw a piece of smoked provolone cheese on there and had a pear on the side.

So, I start my orientation today at 4. Lucky me, it is being held at the Publix that’s only about a quarter mile from my house! I should be done at about 8 tonight and then I have to pick up my dad at the airport at 10. They are providing dinner for us tonight and tomorrow and I think its just a Publix sub. Unfortunately though, I cannot take pictures because (and I didn’t know this until I totally got busted doing it) Publix and Greenwise stores do not allow any photography to be taken inside! Crazy, huh?! And I don’t want to be “that girl” at my orientation trying to break the rules before I even start my job! So, I’m really sorry but I will do a recap of what dinner is when I come home tonight and also take a picture of my lovely rolls for yall so you don’t get too bored. ;)

Have a fantastic afternoon and I will be back tonight when I get home!

Good luck with your dental surgery…what are you having done?

Justjen,

Gahhhhhhhh its periodontal surgery unfortunately. Right before I started the blog I had it done and now, apparently, I have to have it done again. Its really not a pleasant procedure at all—not to get anyone too grossed out, but they have to cut skin from the roof of my mouth and sew it over my gums—the technical term is called “skin grafting”. And unfortunately again, this type of thing is genetic, which is why I am being affected by it. But, lo, there will be laughing gas and percocet so I won’t feel a thing (hopefully).

jenna, what kinds of wraps do you use?

Reply

8 jenna January 6, 2009 at 11:56 am

Lee,

These are touflan’s (sp??) tomato wraps. My mom bought them and though I like them, I prefer the brand’s stone ground whole wheat kind. Actually, I prefer pitas more than wraps because they are fluffier!

Good luck with your surgery, hopefully it will be quick and painless!

Your rolls look so good. I totally did not know that the walnut oil would turn them purple.

I make this raw walnut pesto, and it always comes out with a purple hue. Love the walnuts! Can’t wait to see your baked rolls. Sorry about the surgery, but Vita-Mix to the rescue! For some good fats, I peel, pit, and half an avocado and store in plastic bags in the freezer. The Vita-Mix blends them right up. The smoothie has an odd green color, but the fat from the avocado makes it so creamy! I like frozen avocado, frozen banana, almond milk, and vanilla protein powder. Sometimes I add cocoa powder cause I’m a girl, and I need my chocolate fix. Good luck at orientation tonight!

aww…bummer for the “no pics” policy…i cant wait to hear how the new job is. and on a side note, i thought you should know your blog alone has inspired me to get into yoga in 2009. im a bit scared/nervous but your constant description of how amazing you feel after and all the health benefits has encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone and just do it.

I hope your sugery goes really well, and I am sorry you have to go through it yet again. I have to ask, how do you get your rolls so nice? mine keep cracking on top and never end up light and fluffy like bakery rolls….

I posted some pics on my blog today! (yoga ones!) Not nearly as go-juss as yours, but it’s just me doin’ my yoga thang! ;)

Best of luck tonight and yummy rolls! XOXO

Bummer on the surgery Jenna, I’ll be praying it goes well and you heal fast!

So cool on the walnut oils making the sourdough rolls turn purple. Makes me wish I could have walnuts, I’d totally play around with that! Can’t wait to see the finished product!

Hi Jenna,

Sorry to hear about the surgery! :-(

Since you can’t take pictures in Public’s and Greenwise, does that mean you won’t be able to take pics of what you bake once you start your job?!

hey jenna ( you’re pretty much the only other jenna i know and i’m pretty stoked about that ;] )

i’ve been reading your blog for a while now, (basically this past semester), and now that i JUST started my own blog (today!!!) i decided to comment. i’m still working on it, technology is NOT my friend, but i just wanted to say i love your blog and you’ve inspired me to start doing yoga regularly since you’ve started getting hardcore back into it recently. one of my my resolutions is to be able to do the crow pose by 2010 (it looks awesome/ empowering!)

p.s- from your yesterday’s post-endangered species chocolate is my fave too!

Jenna,
Good luck with your surgery! I like going to the dentist’s but any kind of major project in my mouth totally freaks me out so blahh. Hope you recover quickly!
On a different note, I have a question that you reminded me of by mentioning the rolls you bought in Paris. I’m actually living there right now for 3 months (studying abroad) and although I of course have guidebooks and some food specific blogs/guidebooks i was wondering if you had any special tips off the top of your head for something I MUST eat or buy here before I leave. I looked back through some of your entries that talk about your time in Paris too.
I can cook in the dorms here but it’s always more difficult when you’re away from your OWN kitchen so I’m hoping to hit on a good pattern of convenient and healthy food here. . . h

Hey Jenna! I have a question about yoga for you. I’m really interested in starting to practice it, but I have minimal experience with it. I’ve only done a yoga for abs video that I bought several years ago. I know that there are many different types of yoga, but which is the best type for a beginner to start with? Also, would just doing a video be okay starting out, or do you think it is better to actually go to a class at a gym? What is/are the best book(s) to read about to learn about each type of yoga? Thanks for your help!

Sorry about the icky surgery Jenna :( I have bad gums too but have luckily avoided gum surgery thus far.

I got yelled at for taking pics in Publix before. They don’t want to get caught bleaching their chicken like Food Lion did years ago. Just kidding, I don’t know who bleaches what now a days but I used to live in Florida near Palm Coast and every time you mention Publix It brings back so many memories.

Hi Jenna!
I have been reading your blog for a long time now, and decided to finally comment today! I also have bad gums based on genetics, and actually had periodontal surgery yesterday. The first time I had it was in 2001 in 7th grade, and now I had to get it done again… Just wishing you good luck, you will be in my prayers!
