Carbs & Nut Butter

Good evening šŸ™‚

I hope everyone had a good day! I’m trying really hard to stay positive right now but I’m just sort of blahhhh. I think it’s a combination of the COLD and my ankle. I haven’t really discussed my ankle on the blog just because I never saw a real point to constantly bring it up. But yeah…it’s still really swollen and it hurts. And I know I haven’t been good about staying off it…I know! It’s totally my fault and I’m naturally an incredibly stubborn person and I usually just try to plow through things. I hate not being active! Okay, I’m not going to use this blog to complain but BLAH! Currently I’m sitting on my floor, bundled in sweaters with ice on my ankle. I know I need to rest it more than I’ve been doing because it hasn’t improved…I know..I know.

So anyways, all I’ve craved to eat all day is carbs and nut butter. Snack was a piece of almond butter bread—

IMG_0152

I did about 30 minutes of yoga and called it quits. Had too much on my mind and wasn’t feelin’ it today.

And I’ve been hungry!!! Despite that luxurious lunch, I’ve been hungry all day so finally at 5:00 I made the largest bowl of oat bran ever.

IMG_0153

Finally kicked that hunger to the curb!

IMG_0154

I was like an oatbran making mad woman. I used:

  • 1/2 cup oatbran
  • 1/2 cup 1% milk
  • 1 cup water
  • ~1/3 cup pumpkin
  • 1 banana
  • almond butterrrrr!
  • maple syrup

I think I just needed something with VOLUME and this worked. I actually didn’t even finish all of it.

Went to small group and that was great! I ate lots of gigantic grapes and drank decaf chai tea. I’ve really clicked with the other younger (read: my age) girl in the study, Kelly, and we’ve become good friends actually! And how’s this for an answered prayer….she just happens to have an “extra” desk and chair laying around that she is GIVING them to me for my house so I don’t have to sit on the floor and blog anymore!! I almost cried.

Sorry if this post was debbie downer. We’ll be back in action tomorrow!

Aaaawwww! That’s awful about your ankle! I hope you’re feeling better soon. It’s just the worst when you hurt your feet or hands – we rely on ’em so much!

That’s totally cool about your new friend and the desk and chair. Bless her heart!!!

You shouldn’t ever expect yourself not to feel sad or angry, or judge yourself for feeling that way. Yoga is a useful tool to remind you not to take any emotions too seriously. Negative thoughts come. Don’t judge them, just observe.

Are you taping your ankle? I injured mine 13 weeks ago. Had PT, the whole nine yards. But my PT still has me tape it for not only exercise (which is still limited) but for extened periods of standing on it or walking around.

This summer when I tore ligaments in my ankle, the doc wouldn’t let me go walking or do yoga. I learned to ride the recumbant bike instead as it is non-weight bearing and so much easier on the ankles and feet. At first I hated it, but I learned to love it over the month because I could still MOVE. I also found that coming home to put your foot UP (on a pillow) and put a bag of ice on it while you read or watch TV helps a LOT. I did it every night.
Hope your ankle gets better soon.

I totally understand. Was always an exercise fanatic and shattered my foot, 6-months in a cast/on crutches, negotiating San Francisco Hills trying to carry a couple of grocery bags/purse and keep weight off foot….total bummer. After I started taking powdered calcium with D, then it healed. You will sooooo appreciate it when can move freely again.

You’re not a Debbie Downer! It’s important to express all feelings, and in this entry I saw not pessimism but acknowledgments of things that really suck (and they do!) and acknowledgments of things that are going really well. And that’s what life is– a pattern of ups and downs, sometimes all mixed together.

my dad had the same thing happen with his ankle and he HAD to stay off of it for at least 3 weeks (hard to do I know) but it was purple and swelling .. he had to do 10 min of ice and 10 of heat constantly throughout the day…now like a month and a half later it’s JUST starting to heal..

You don’t want it to get worse :):) But I’m sure you will do whats best!

Everyone has blah days and it can feel so good to write about it and get it out there. I know what you mean about volume – sometimes I can eat, and eat, and eat and not feel full. It takes something like yogurt or oatmeal or soup to make my tum happy. Your body is probably in overdrive trying to heal your ankle – hence the extra hunger šŸ™‚

You are not alone in feeling frustrated and down!! I really think that an injury is one of the most trying, humbling experiences for a really active person. I stress fractured my foot earlier this year when training for a half marathon and I finally just had to go with the flow, stop running, and take care of myself!! Just remember, this is a small bump in the road and in a few years, you’ll probably look back and see that it taught you something. So glad that you’ve found another kind woman who is helping you out šŸ™‚

  • Marie
    October 29, 2009 at 6:13 am

I know exactly what you’re going through! Are you doing rehab on it? Those exercises really help strengthen the muscles and tendons and help prevent it from getting twisted again. Check some sports med websites for guidance and be sure to ice it after you’ve been running (hobbling?) around all day. Good luck! šŸ™‚

  • Liz
    October 29, 2009 at 6:14 am

Sorry the ankle is still bothering you Jenna!
As for the cold, do you have control over your own heat in your apartment? I know being in a cold apartment makes me grumpy. I used to sort of “wait it out” in the fall before I turned the heat on (mostly for $$ reasons) but I live in a cold climate and I realized it wasn’t worth freezing to save a few bucks. My heat has been on for a couple weeks now. If you don’t have individual control, can you talk to the landloard about it?

I hope you ankle is feeling better soon!! I have sprained/broken my ankle several times now and I know – it is such a pain staying off it. Worth it in the long run though – I broke my ankle in Australia and was having too much fun to rest it or go to a Dr. It now has a permanent stress fracture in it! That was a very bad idea of mine :O/.

    October 29, 2009 at 7:27 am

I sprained my ankle this summer and like you, it was swollen and painful weeks after the sprain happen. I finally went to see the doctor, and he told me that it’s normal for it to take up to 8 months to unswell. Even now I find that my ankle is still bigger then it used to be.

What I’m saying is it will get better! It just takes some time šŸ™‚ And I don’t know how you can do yoga because even now (4 months after the sprain) there’s a lot of poses which I can’t do as deeply because of it.

Oh, and trace your ABC’S with your toes! It’ll help you regain flexibility in your ankle.
