Eating My Flowers

Oh, I had such fun surprises at work today!!!

Even though tomorrow is my official last day at Roy’s, I got presents today! πŸ™‚ I got fresh basil and rosemary (they said, “Jenna we were going to get you flowers but then figured you would like herbs better because you can eat them”! They were right!!!!), a gift certificate to Whole Foods, cards and a gift certificate to the Millenia Mall next to my apartment! What fun!! I’ll have to bring in some chocolates tomorrow for everyone in return!

When I don’t workout I definitely notice a strong decrease in my hunger. I mean, I’ll still eat if food is in front of me (duh), but there’s no “I’m starving, give me food now or I will scream” moment. I had to eat at 5:00 since I have to get to school, but I definitely could have made it a lot longer without eating. Even though taking a couple rest days feels good (and I got a lot more sleep last night!), my legs are itching to run! I’m going to release all that on Friday morning though. =)

For dinner tonight (and bear with me because I’m trying to eat my entire freezer before I move next month…), I had a salmon burger with laughing cow, hot sauce and dijon mustard on an Ezekiel english muffin with half a sliced mango and a spinach salad with balsamic vinegar.

These salmon burgers always do a great job at filling me up (they are wild salmon burgers from whole foods) because of all the healthy fats. I just looove salmon!

And, for dessert, I had a bite of a homemade double chocolate cookie that the pastry chef at Roy’s made today and gave me to take home. This is a lesson in restraint, girls. I know my body, and I knew I would feel all crappy if I ate the entire cookie (which is massive) and had been sedentary all day— so I took one bite and wrapped up the rest and stuck it in the freezer for later. It’s not that I wouldn’t eat the cookie, it’s just that I didn’t really want the whole thing right now. I’d rather savor it slowly for a nice dessert than just stuff it down my throat on my way to school. This weekend coming up is going to be filled with unhealthy eating as we celebrate Ryan’s birthday (and I make my annual birthday dessert……….), so I would rather be healthy now and splurge later.

My REAL treat later is the peanut butter cookie larabar I’m bringing to school with me!

Time to go finish this chocolate box…it’s due at 10:00 and then we are doing a deep clean of the kitchen because tonight is the last night of chocolate (thank god!), as tomorrow we start working with sugar! Every night in this class we stay until at least 11:40 so maybe tonight will be different….?! I say that every night!!!!

Oooh what wonderful gifts! Your co-workers are so generous and obviously know you very well :). Dinner looks delicious and dessert sounds divine (4 d’s in one sentence?) and, as usual, you set such a good example with your mindful eating. Although, I’ve got to admit, as far as Ryan’s birthday food, well, I’m excited for you. Have a great night!

Good luck with the chocolates tonight!

That was so sweet of your coworkers. Clearly they know you well. πŸ™‚ I love your mentality about not eating the whole cookie tonight. I’m going to keep that in mind next time I’m faced with a similar situation. Thanks! I just love your blog more every day.

    What great gifts you got!

Good job on the cookie restraint! I like doing things like that too, just having a taste and saving the rest for later. I actually don’t even like having a whole piece of something, whole cookie etc. I’m all about the random bites here and there. Obviously they all add up though…. haha.

    Enjoy the last chocolate class!

Your colleagues are indeed very sweet and they know you well, hence the whole foods gift certificate.

Good call on the cookie. I did the same thing when I couldn’t finish the complimentary cookies given out with my tea as it was massive so I packed it home to be frozen. Hope it freezes better than cheesecake though. I defrosted half a piece of cheesecake last night and only ate half as it was kind of weird. Thank goodness I didn’t get the runs!

Ya, I am not as hungry as on the days I work out either. I have been an athlete the majority of my life, so very few days go by when I don’t work out or do something active. I think my body is just so used to it, that it definitely “conserves” energy on those days that I do very little, but everyone needs them every once in awhile to rest and regain strength/energy to keep pushing ahead!

You are much better than I at being so disciplined to only eat one bite of that cookie! Drug reps brought lunch to my office on monday from a local deli, and it included a slab of peanut butter bar topped with chocolate; I didn’t eat the WHOLE thing, but it was so huge, that I still probably had 2 servings worth, yikes!

Mmmm that cookie looks great. And I totally support the cookie situation. I usually try to indulge in treats only when I know I will feel good about it afterwards.

    Alison,

Thanks for answering my pasta sauce question! I was just wondering if you let it thaw in the containers or microwave it to thaw it?

And does anybody think you should be able to buy a variety pack of LARABARs and pick how many of whatever flavor you want. It would be a little more complicated but I think that would go over well because you get just what you want and It would be worth your money more! I don’t have any stores around that carry them, so my only source is ordering online πŸ™

Jenna, I don’t know if you’ve mentioned this before but what are you going to do food-wise when you live with your friend’s parents? I assume you’re going to be using their kitchen, but are you going to try to stick to super-simple-prep meals or are you going to eat dinner with them? That’d be kind of cute! It’d be like living at home again…just with different parents!

You have the sweetest co-workers ever! Leave it to fellow food-industry workers to realize the true value of a fresh basil plant.

And I hear ya on trying to use up the dregs of your freezer… I’m moving in a month and have to figure out how to work my way through, like, 3 cans of beans plus about 4 lbs. of frozen veggies :-/

    Christie,

I’m moving back to my hometown—Vero Beach, Florida.

    Meghan,

I have no idea!!!!! it’s going to take some getting used to and I’m sure I’ll be running on some crazy hours as well when we have stuff going on at the club. Betty (my best friend’s mom) LOVES to cook and bake so I’m sure I’ll be joining them for dinner whenever I have the chance…other than that, it really will be easy quick-prep meals because I’ll be in and out a lot between training for this race and working 40 hours a week as a pastry chef! I hope you all bear with me!!
