Giant Chai Tea Frosted Cookies

I have a couple things I’d like to say.

The first is that yesterday afternoon I taught a group of nine-year-olds yoga as part of a special nutrition focused afterschool program. Guys….these little kids were, quite possibly, the coolest little kids in all the land. They rocked cobra pose (while hissing of course), stood tall in tree pose and then they all popped up to full wheel like it ain’t no thang. Then, we all sat in a circle and one little boy who hadn’t said a word all class quietly whispered, “I really loved that”. So, of course my heart just melted and I eagerly responded, “oh! what did you love most?” And then… in his quiet, sweet little voice he goes, “bridge pose!” Alright then! I’ll take it. Afterward, we all sat in a circle and drank green smoothies and talked about the importance of fruit as snacks. It was pretty amazing.

The next thing I’d like to say is completely unrelated and that is that you guys have to stop me….these cookies are OUT OF CONTROL. As in, I can’t stop eating them. They need to find a way out of my house and into your arms.

These giant chai tea frosted cookies are the beautiful cross between a cupcake and a cookie.

I’m just going to pause for a second and let you wrap your mind around that.

Day in the Life

A few other bloggers have recently written done posts like this, so I figured it was my turn. To be honest, I am incredibly nosy and love posts like this! I love knowing what people do all day at their job, and what they eat. Something really boring to them is usually pretty interesting to me. I am super grateful for the fact that I get to do this for a full-time job—it definitely does not always come easy though! Nevertheless, I love every second of it, as well as all of you who make the whole thing possible.

Turkey Fajita Burgers with Grilled Tomatillo Salsa

Happy Monday!

I’m on a grilling kick. And by “grilling kick”, I mean I grilled turkey burgers and salsa on Saturday and now am wondering why I’ve had this nice grill out on my patio for the past two years and this is only the second time I’ve ever used it. It’s kind of like that ice cream maker that I COULDN’T LIVE WITHOUT…and then once I actually got it, it sat and collected dust for months before I left it at my parent’s house and moved West. I like the idea of grilling…and every time (okay, all two times) I’ve grilled, it’s been delicious but I then I go back inside and promptly forget about it for the next six months. Oops.

My boyfriend? Now he’s a grilling freak. And really good at it, too! I don’t know why I couldn’t just bake a batch of cookies and wait on him, but wouldn’t you know the weekend he goes out of town I get a major craving for some nice.charred.meat.

Before we talk meat, let’s talk salsa. Have you ever made grilled salsa before? I’m in love.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there today! Your hard work, big hearts and devotion to your families do not go unnoticed.

Mom, thank you for getting me glasses in the third grade. And for sticking up for me in the sixth grade when I got picked on for those same glasses. For not letting me come home from summer camp when I was too homesick to get out of my bunk. For teaching me how to pray. For sleeping next to me for two weeks when I got my heartbroken in high school. For letting me ~~borrow~~ have your shoes. For teaching me to love books more than anything. For baking with me. For unleashing hell and fury the time you found a pack of cigarettes in my purse during college (WHAT WAS I THINKING?! so not cool). For always having my back. For telling me this soon shall pass. For not letting me drop out of college to go straight to culinary school. For teaching me to always to stay true to myself. For telling me I am perfect just the way I am. For giving me the love of travel. For teaching me that laughter is the most important thing in a relationship.

Moms rock.

Lone Wolf

I’ll admit upfront that I’m a huge Jodi Picoult fan.

I discovered Jodi the summer after junior year of college when I was supposed to be working hard as a copy writer intern for an advertising agency. Hah! Well, after the first book (I think it was Plain Truth that got me and still remains my favorite book of hers), I sat at my little intern cubicle and read.that.summer.away. Let’s just say that I got very good at hiding my book the second my boss came into the room! Just like I’ve gotten very good at tossing my cellphone in the backseat when I see a cop on the road since I’ve moved to California.

I kid…I kid!

But back to Jodi—-I couldn’t stop. I had it bad. Hopefully that boss doesn’t read this blog. If you’re a Jodi Picoult fan, you understand that she gets you from the very first page and there’s nothing you can after that.

Well, guess what? Lone Wolf is the same way! It’s all very classic Jodi. However, this book was not my favorite of hers. Don’t get me wrong, when I took this book with me to Avery Island last month I found myself coming home from our fancy dinners and reading late into the night. It’s gripping and also really interesting if you have an unnatural obsession with Julie of the Wolves like I do. I think my main issue with this book was that it was a little on the bland side for me. Other Jodi books have literally had me out of my seat and pacing around the living room (or throwing the book at the wall). To me, Lone Wolf just seemed very typical. I wanted more character development, I think…I’m honestly not sure. Unfortunately though, the last two books I’ve read from her haven’t wowed me like her older stuff.

Remember when books were just $3.95?

(I do realize this isn’t all her books, but these are the ones that have really stuck with me over the years)

P.S. I asked on Twitter the other day what everyone thought of The Vow and if it’s worth renting….well, I watched it last night and LOVED IT. I’m a sap at heart.

Hello Dolly Bars

This is one of Great Grandma’s recipes so we already know it contains graham crackers, coconut and sweetened condensed milk. Obviously.

If you’re been following my journey working through her recipe box, you know as well as I do that these three ingredients made up the crux of Gram’s life. The woman loved her graham crackers. And her butter. She lived a very sweet life indeed. Is it possible to miss someone you never really knew? Because sometimes when I’m making her recipes and squinting my eyes to read her tiny cursive letters, I really miss her and wish she was the one in the kitchen baking away instead of me.

Coconut Blueberry Muffin Tops

This is the first year that I won’t get to spend Mother’s Day with my mom. I’m pretty bummed. Flights were just too expensive ($800 to fly east?! really?) and I’m flying to Michigan later this month for a family wedding anyway. Ann Arbor friends! I’m coming your way….it will be my first trip ever to the great state of Michigan! I’m going to take my “mature dress” for a test run—thank you all so much for the great ideas on what to wear with it. Right now, I’m thinking hot pink pumps…

So even though I don’t get to spend Mother’s Day with my mom (I get to spend it teaching yoga to cyclists), I wanted to share a fun brunch idea with you guys that will be perfect if you’re lucky enough to spend Sunday with your mom.

Why hello there!

I like you guys a lot. A whole lot….just in case you didn’t know. I feel like we all would be such great real-life friends! Is it weird that I’ve met the majority of my friends on the internet? kinda maybe don’t answer that.

I love writing these posts because hopefully they give you more of a glimpse of the girl behind the laptop screen. Recipes are fun, but sometimes you just need a dose of real-life…you know? Hopefully you take away that from this post.

On that note, here’s some stuff I’m really loving now (all photos taken by iphone)!
