Food Coma

by jenna on July 12, 2009

Hi guys!

I’m glad you enjoyed my “wine history” post. Tomorrow I will being our five day “Wine 101″ class with a “lecture” on white wine. Hehe ;) In all honesty though, what are some things you would like me to address during the next five days? I’m down for whatever–this should be fun!

This morning I had an AWESOME run. Short, sweet and to the point, I ran two miles at an 8:40 pace on the treadmill and it felt awesome. I had so much energy I could have cranked the speed up even more (must have been the extra sleep) but I didn’t want to re-injure myself so I kept it easy.

Afterwards I stretched and refueled with a half serving of EAS Myoplex.

IMG_1785.JPG
IMG_1786.JPG
I was sent this sample to review for the blog and even though its not something I normally drink, I agreed because I like to try new things! EAS Myoplex contains 25 grams of protein and is naturally and artificially flavored. Ingredients include a lot of things I can’t pronounce. Did it taste good? Yes! It tasted like liquid marshmallows—my sweet tooth was happy! :) Would I buy it again? No. While this might work for some people, it tasted a bit too artificial for my tastes.
When I was in college I drank a TON of these protein drinks but I just feel like I’ve come pretty far in my understanding of nutrition and food in the past few years and I really just don’t like to put things in my body that are artificial and, err, fake. They taste good going down but they leave a bad aftertaste in my mouth that could only come from fake sugar. I’m VERY sensitive to sucralose (the third ingredient listed) and while this didn’t give me a migraine, I actually do have a dull headache right now that I can’t shake. However, Ryan LOVED this stuff so who am I to say! ;)
Not very long after I made lunch because I was starving!

IMG_1787.JPG
This is a Morningstar farms black bean burger on Ezekiel bread with red onion, spinach, aged cheddar cheese and all natural ketchup. Aaaaamazing! On the side, I had sugar-free raspberry acai applesauce!

IMG_1788.JPG
We laid out all afternoon by the pool and I skimmed through my “California Wine For Dummies” book (lol) in the sunshine. Snack was a half cup of whipped cottage cheese with organic canned pears and 2 tbsp MixMyGranola!

IMG_1789.JPG
Cocktail hour with my last glass of Murphy-Gooooooode

IMG_1790.JPG
And then tonight was pizza night!!!!!! We picked up Greenwise pizza and it.was.awesome. Ryan and I both were in pizza heaven!

IMG_1791.JPG

I got a small pizza with goat cheese and mixed veggies—heaven!

IMG_1793.JPG
IMG_1794.JPG
I polished off half….gotta save some for tomorrow! ;) I loved the HUGE pillows of goat cheese!!!!
Dessert was two extra dark chocolate Le Petit Ecolier cookies. I adore these.

I’m in a food coma right now but it was worth it! ;)
Time for bed….gotta stock up on my zzzz’s this week!

Wow, that black bean burger sandwich looks dangerously awesome. I am a sucker for aged cheddar cheese.

Since you are a food guru, I would be interested in hearing some of your expertise on wine pairings, particularly vegetarian suggestions (for selfish reasons). :-D

Wishing you an awesome Monday!

I’m so excited for you post on white wine. I prefer white wines and roses, so I can’t wait to hear what you have to say about them.
I would also love to hear about some of your favorite wine pairings and your favorite choices of red wines. I’m always reluctant to try red wines because they are often too heavy for me and leave me with a headache, but I’m always open to try new ones especially paired with a particular dish or type of food!

Yeah, I totally understand. I can’t stomach artificial sugars and foods anymore either. Not good for the tummy!

Ooooh that sandwich look ah-mazing!!! If only I could recreate it at home with some Wisconsin cheese ;)

Pizza looks absolutely delicious as well, as always. Love all your glorious toppings!! Haha, can’t say the same for Ryans.

I drink a lot of protein shakes – Muscle Milk light, usually. Could this be causing acne? It seems the older I get and the more I work out, the more I break out. Your blog has inspired me to eat/drink more of the Goode stuff! ;)

I would love to now more about storing wine,
-how long should opened wine be kept?
-people these days seem to say red wine should be refrigerated which seems weird to me?
-do you think it really matters what type of wineglass/shape one serves white vs red in?Some swear it does!
-One summer I was given a glass of red wine mixed with gingerale and it was …delicious?Have you ever tries this or other combos?
-white or red with sushi?
-any advice re cooking with wine…should we stick with cheap cooking wine?
And finally just a comment-my friends had a FANTASTIC wine party some of you may want to try. They asked everyone to bring an inexpensive wine that they really like to the party along with a cheese that you feel goes well with it.At the party they had little signs on the walls in diff corners with the country/flag .It was so fun,esp all the amazing diff nationalities and types of cheeses people brought.
Cheers all!Sante!!

Since you’ve had the pleasure of drinking wine in France, can you do a post on French wine? I still get confused by their naming conventions!! I kind of understand Burgundy vs. Bordeaux but the nuances of French wine still pretty much escape me. I often avoid it, although I love it when someone tells me what to get, b/c I am not sure of what kind of wine I’m getting! Thanks!

Hey Jenna! I definitely have an interest in wine, but I find that every time I go to buy some, I fall back on what I know because I am afraid of not liking something! Maybe at the end of each of your posts, you could include a few of your favorites (including one for the budget-conscious folk!), whether it be the post about white, red, from a certain region, etc. THANKS!

I love wine, so I can’t wait for your ‘lessons’! LOL I’m a bit addicted to buying dishes and glassware, so I have tonnes of wine glasses in different shapes / sizes, I’m curious to know what you think about whether those kinds of things really make a difference. (Well, I know they do somewhat, because of how they hold — or don’t hold — the tannins, but I wonder about these wine glasses that are, say, made specifically for a shiraz, or whatever. Like, really?)

Also, as someone else mentioned, I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts on pairings with food. Like, is there really a wine that works well with pizza? What kind of food would you pair with a nice rose or zinfandel wine? etc.

PS: Your bean burger looks so delish! YUMMMM.

Yum, goat cheese on pizza has always been one of my favorite toppings!! I look forward to your white wine posting – although I always feel slightly “less cultured” when I say that I prefer white wines to red, I feel like it makes me sound so girly and young and inexperienced that I prefer the white to the more mature reds!

I’ve noticed that you seem to get alot of headaches and migraines. I also use to get them and since I started using a nightguard, as recommended by my awesome dentist, I stopped getting them. I have TMJ, which basically means that I grind my teeth and clench my jaw in my sleep. When I first went to my initial consultation, my dentist was examining my jaw and felt a popping sound everything time I bite down. Then she asked if I ever woke up with headaches or if I ever just suddenly got a headache in the middle of the day for no reason at all. I was shocked when she asked that because I thought that I just had to go thru life with them. Them she explained TMJ to me and fitted me for a nightguard. I’m glad to say that I’ve been using it for a year and have had about 4 headaches since. And that was only because I was lazy and chose not to use it those nights. So, if you haven’t already tried a nightguard, I would recommended seeing your dentist ASAP. Good luck!

i’m looking forward to reading about white wines and light reds. as a ‘big red’ kind of girl, i don’t have much experience in those areas and i’m interested in expanding my repertoire! enjoy your time in sonoma; i was born and raised in northern california and miss it like crazy! hope you like my home state. :)

I am also interested to know about wine storage after it is open. My problem is that my husband is a total non drinker except a random sip every now and then, he does not like the taste, so when I open a bottle, it ends up going bad before I can use it. And the special wine glasses is a nice topic, too. I think white wine glasses are prettiest :D but should I really be serving everything in them?

Oh, and, that pizza looks amazing!

Goat cheese and veggie pizza is probably one of the world’s best foods! I made this last week and almost went into a food coma myself. I added spicy hummus on top of my slice and OMG Jenna, it was TO DIE FOR! You must try this with your leftovers. ;)

Have a wonderful Monday girl!

I agree with other commenters, wine pairings would be an awesome post since I only know that red goes with meat and white usually goes with seafood and chicken. Other than that, I’m at a loss for what to accompany my meal.

Can’t wait for wine week!
