How was your weekend??
This weekend I ate pizza (twice), went to the farmer’s market, baked a cobbler, swept my floors, cleaned my car, had dinner with great friends, went to church, had lunch with more great friends, ate lots of tacos (cooked lots of tacos!), laughed with my girlfriends and had a handsome fellow make me homemade spaghetti.
I also perfected a smoothie recipe I’ve been wanting to try for awhile!
In general, the idea of mango lassis make me a little queasy. A yogurt drink…? Like GoGurt? I’m sorry, but not so much. However, the idea of a frozen, creamy mango lassi-inspired smoothie sounded perfect! Especially on one of the hottest days of the year!
If you’re wondering, cardamom is what lassifies a mango lassi. Yes, I just made “lassifies” a word. What?
Cardamom is one of those spices I love but don’t use enough. Just smelling it reminds me that I need to make this and this again sooner rather than later!
I also put honey in my smoothie! Honey makes everything better.
The end result is a thick, creamy mango smoothie that isn’t overly sweet and has just a touch of spice. The yogurt gives it protein and substance, making it the perfect on-the-go breakie when it’s still too hot for oatmeal. You could also serve it as part of an Indian-inspired meal to really wow your guests! Serve chicken tikka masala, channa masala, warm garlic naan and small cups of this smoothie for dessert!
Oh, and don’t forget to invite me…mmk?
serves 1-2
Ingredients:
1 cup frozen mango chunks
1 cup plain yogurt (not Greek and not non-fat)
1/2 cup milk
1 T honey
cardamom for sprinkling on top
Directions:
Place mango, yogurt, milk and honey in the blender and process until smooth. Divide into one large glass or two small glasses and top with cardamom.
Time:
5 minutes

August 15, 2011 at 5:09 amI loooooooooove cardamom. and mango. and mango lassi.
I’m convinced I’d love this! I made mango ice cream last week that tasted just like mango lassi. I should have thought to put cardamom in it! Thanks for the inspiration!

August 15, 2011 at 5:28 amThis looks like the perfect summer drink. And I know lassis. I’ve spent my life just across the sea from India, and have been sipping lassis for so long I can’t even remember my first. A yogurt drink sounds odd at first, I suppose, but the bite and tang is what makes this drink so special.

August 15, 2011 at 5:29 amI was wondering why not Greek too ? I eat Greek yogurt all the time so I always have it on hand. Will buy regular plain though if there is really a difference. This looks so good and I’ve been really craving mango this summer!!

August 15, 2011 at 7:00 amit’s just too thick and tangy!

August 15, 2011 at 7:22 amI like to buy both regular, plain yogurt and some greek yogurt. Greek is way more expensive. There are a lot of variety out now. It saves me money to use different ones during the day since I tend to eat a lot of yogurt.

August 15, 2011 at 5:37 amYogurt drinks aren’t all bad–when I was a kid I loved this one called Yo-J. It was strawberry flavored…milky yogurt? Thicker than milk, thinner than a milkshake. Delicious.
…Yours looks good too. π

August 15, 2011 at 6:13 amI’ve always wondered how you made a lassi. I figured I’d just be mango & yogurt but here you are showing me that it’s so much more but no impossible.
I’m totally bookmarking this for my next Indian night!!

August 15, 2011 at 6:16 amI wish I liked mangoes!! Can I sub in another fruit or would it just not be the same?
And haha – made up words are my bread and butter (especially turning nouns into verbs…just makes life easier).
Glad you had such a fantastic weekend!

August 15, 2011 at 7:00 amyou can! It wouldn’t be a “mango lassi” then, rather just a fruit smoothie, but you totally can do whatever you want!

August 15, 2011 at 11:53 amThat looks awesome. I love Indian food, but never spring for the lassis because I think they’re about as healthy as milkshakes. I forget how creamy smoothies become when you add mango! Can’t wait to try it.

August 15, 2011 at 12:29 pmThis is SO GREAT! One of my first posts was about kefir smoothies, and I mentioned that my favorite flavor smoothie is mango. August 15, 2011 at 2:22 pmLOL. I have the same brand of honey! Er, had. Finished it off several weeks ago and am using the jar for smoothies and such. ^_^; I dunno where the honey came from because I smuggled it out of my parents pantry. They weren’t using it.

August 16, 2011 at 8:59 pmI think frozen mango gives smoothies an even better consistency than bananas! Last summer, I made a sort of deconstructed mango lassi by layering the yogurt and frozen pureed mango mixture.
