Groats Are For Kids

Good morning bloggies!

I’m happy to announce that I’m finally starting to decongest a little bit after taking mucho allergy prescription allergy meds. I wish it didn’t have to come down to this but every year it’s the same and finally I am starting to breathe again! I slept really well last night and actually slept in (gasp!) until 6:15! When sleeping until 6:15 is considered “sleeping in”, you know you have some issues. Oh well. I got up and made a snackie before the gym–

an almond butter stuffed date (mega stuffed!)

+ the other half of my primal strip from the other day (obsession alert)

At the gym I did 10 minutes on the elliptical, 20 minutes on the stationary bike + triceps, back and abs. Plus lots of deeeeeeep stretches and yoga moves because tomorrow is my 5K trail race!

When I got home, I had a new breakkie….my first RAW breakkie (well almost)

Groats!

Now, organic oat groats are actually the WHOLE OAT KERNEL with only the outer husk removed. When you use rolled oats, you are using the oat groat that has been steamed and flattened with a roller. Oat groats are a less processed product and are considered raw when they haven’t been toasted after the husk has been removed.

So, last night I measured out one serving of the groats (1/4 cup dry) and soaked them in water overnight. This morning I found that the groat has softened a whole lot without ever needing to cook or simmer them on the stove! I drained the groats, rinsed then and then did the fun part……….I combined the groats with a little water, a banana, cinnamon, 1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder (not raw) in the Vita-Mix! Not even 30 seconds later I got incredibly creamy and delicious cereal!

Of course I slathered them with my toasted almond butter, which again isn’t raw so the breakfast was really raw…but it was almost raw! =) It was really really yummy though!

Very filling to boot!

I’m off to wake up Ryan and then get ready to head out on the boat for the morning. Hopefully we will catch something and can get fun pictures!

**SO excited to make a special dessert later! 😉

I’ve eaten groats before but never blended like that! I will have to give it a try as I didn’t like the texture of them plain.

What a nice way to switch it up from normal oatmeal, it looks like the consistency is a little different.

Have fun in the nice Florida weather this weekend, it is cold and rainy here! 🙁

Just wondering – are you still trying ayurveda/yoga for your symptoms?

    • jenna
      March 14, 2009 at 3:18 pm

      Jena,

Yes and no. I’ve been doing some reading on the subject but following the ayurvedic principles strictly just does not seem to go with my lifestyle, unfortunately! I have to combine fruit with dairy and can’t go without my morning banana 🙁

Ah! Nice one on the groats! What you had there was almost like Bircher Muesli – my favorite breakfast! I’ve been dying to try it with oat groans and it sounds like it’s a winner. How do you think it’d be if I didn’t bother blending them up? Hmmm….

    hi,
i just wanted to ask, if its okay as a christian girl to stay with your boyfriend. like sleeping over etc. i was brought up thinking that it was wrong, but i see so many christian girls and boys live together and have sleepovers before marriage.

What are your thoughts? I’m not judging, but as a young teen, i am really curious

    Thanks!

[…] you can recall, I made groats for breakfast earlier last month. This morning I tried again with the same approach. I soaked 1/4 cup oat groats in water overnight […]
