Hair Pulling Cardio

Good morning!

Goodness….I PASSED OUT last night right after blogging and slept like a total baby. Must have been the glass of red wine, the pizza, the dessert….everything. I was soooo sleepy so pardon me if there were major grammatical errors in my previous post!

This morning I woke up around 5:00 (I know…sooo early) and had a pre-workout snack of a pear + 1/2 banana:

And then I hit the gym! I REALLY wanted to make Bikram this morning, but Ryan and I scored VIP tickets to the Outback Pro-Am Golf Tourny here in Tampa and we have to leave the house rather soon for that. Apparently there are always a bunch of celebrities there so I’m hoping to get a sighting or two! 😉

Anyways, in lue of no Bikram, I forced myself on the dreaded cardio machines at the gym. Gross…I know. I had a magazine and a new book though so it wasn’t SO bad…….but I only managed 15 minutes on the elliptical and 10 minutes on the stationary bike before I almost pulled my hair out with boredom. Then I came home and did Level 2 of The Shred minus the cardio circuits because I have determined that the final straw for my shins was all that Jillian-induced bouncing around that I was doing! Jumping jacks are NOT shin splint friendly!

For breakfast I was going try chia again, but honestly, I just really CRAVE oatmeal!!! I don’t think I could ever eat a raw breakfast because of it. I love just love me a huge warm bowl of oats topped with almond butter and banana SO much that I don’t think I could ever stray. Oats are just so incredibly reliable. You KNOW they will keep you full for a good four hours and they taste just so dang amazing every time. 🙂

Combo today consisted of:

  • 1/2 cup oats + 1/2 cup almond milk + 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup liquid egg whites
  • 1 banana
  • big scoop raw almond butter
  • tons of cinnamon + pinch of sea salt!

It was perfection! I really do like the egg white addition in my bowl because it seems to add more volume and fluff, not mention 6 more grams of protein. A bowl like this always helps me start my day on the right foot!

I’m off to shower and R and I are hitting the road for a golf-filled day! He told me there will be a bunch of free food there……..he always knows how to entice me! 😉

Hi Jenna- I am always interested in the books you choose. Do you have any good recommendations that are in paperback (my bookclub won’t choose a hardcover)? I am also going on vacay soon and could use a good book. Our most recent read was the People of the Book..which was excellent if you haven’t read it! Thanks so much!

UGH! Cardio equipment IS so boring! I call the treadmill the “dreadmill”. Have fun at the golf tournament. I love the way the sounds carry at golf courses. It’s so echo-y and cool sounding. And… heck ya for free food!

    Hi Jenna,

If you’re looking to add in non-aggravating cardio to the 30DS workouts, you can do the punches in the squat position from workout 1. She does them with uppercuts as well in her other videos. In level 3, she adds light handweights JUST in case the punches get too easy.

Just makin’ sure you get all you can out of your shredding! 😉

I am SO relieved to hear that I’m not the only one for whom doing jumping jacks hurts the shins! Doing the shred, I would always wince because of that, but I thought it was just me 🙂

I have also been craving oats like crazy. Like honestly, I could eat oats with almond milk, banana and hazelnut butter for every meal! I have to force myself to eat something else, it’s weird!

ps: that thai coconut looked so amazing! I’ve been meaning to try coconut milk/water but i’m afraid it will taste funny :S

I totally know what you mean about ‘hair pulling’ cardio. I don’t know how people can run on a treadmill. I am bored after about 5 minutes and want to die. Also, I have noticed that the 30 day shred is a bit hard on the knees and shins..but man I feel so good once I’ve done it.

I went on a bike ride today and thought of you. Thanks for inspiring me (That’s not meant to be creepy).

Hope you have fun at your event.

I totally agree – oatmeal does it best. I had toast with jam and fruit this morning, and it just didn’t fill me up! Same calories, way different result.

Free food…always a good thing 🙂 we never leave college, I think, when it comes to free food.

I am so not a fan of gym cardio too. Magazines are my lifesaver when I have to tough it out, though. I live in a place with nearly perfect weather year-round, so I don’t understand why people don’t just exercise outdoors. I mean, in your case I understand…but really people (at my gym)…save some electricity and get outside!

YES, oats are my fav. I just LOVE how they keep you full for so long! 🙂

The gym is really boring. I kind of upset I bought a membership cause I hardly ever make it up there. I’d much rather workout outside since it’s usually staying warm around here.

Brunch of FREE FOOD? WOO. Sounds like my kind of place! 😀

I am a fan of egg whites in my oatmeal as well….almost makes it custardy and even more filling! Custardy is a strange new word I invented that looks like a cross between “cuss” and “bastard.” I like it!

Amazing workout for a Sunday morning!
I am going to start “Shredding” as soon as my order comes in from Amazon.com!!

Btw, Jenna- have you read “Change of Heart” by Jodi Picoult? I am just about finished and it is amazing! I know you are a fan of her writing.

Why don’t you mix the chia seeds into your oatmeal? I apologize if you’ve already tried this. I’ve been away so I haven’t caught up to the posts I’ve missed. I just mix chia seeds into my oatmeal. OR into a smoothy or make a drink of them. They help regulate blood sugar (among other things). I have a close friend who is an ultrarunner. Just did her 1st 100 miler (placed 3rd overall and 1st female and cut 19 minutes off the woman’s course record) and she loves chia seeds. Eats them all the time before her long runs and before racing. She definitely noticed a difference when she started using them.

Oooh! I’m SO glad there is someone else in this world who eats their oatmeal with eggs! I love to mash up a hardboiled egg in mine with a little bit of salt. It keeps me full for much longer and is a great savory breakfast.
