Breakfast/ Dinner

Happy Thursday!

Happy Thursday!

Hope y’all had a great end to your day yesterday and a good night’s rest. Instead of waking up this morning at 5, I woke up at 6:15 so I considered that a success. Maybe one day I will sleep until 7 again?!

Anyways, yesterday afternoon I had my favorite snack of millet toast with coconut butter and jam—

IMG_4539
And then last night I headed over to Rocky and Adam’s house for dinner. Rocky made this absolutely delicious Japanese pork dish called tonkatsu, which was basically this tempura pork served on top of rice and cabbage with yummy sauce. It was amazing!

I owe the guys dinner and am contemplating what I shall make….but I told them first they must clean their kitchen ๐Ÿ˜‰
This morning I woke up with a massive headache for some reason. I feel hung over even though all I had to drink last night was about four sips of Chenin Blanc. Maybe I’m dehydrated? Regardless, I had a big bowl of egg white oatmeal with banana and blueberries:

IMG_4545
And I’m about to answer some emails then head outside for a short run before meeting Anna and Michaela again to work out at the studio. I told them no lunges this time! ๐Ÿ˜‰

It’s that time of year again!

I’m currently trying to cope with the fact that…I just ran out of Almond Butter! Has anyone tried the Blue Diamond stuff? It seems quite a bit cheaper than the brands I usually find to buy so was thinking of picking some up… but sometimes you get what you pay for so if anyone has any input I’d appreciate it!

Maybe there’s MSG in the tonkatsu sauce? Sometimes I get weird headaches after eating stuff like that. But they probably made the sauce from scratch!

The oats look great! As does dinner last night – yum! I love tempura anything … maybe I should talk the husband into us going out for sushi this weekend.

Yay for the Healthy Living Summit in 2010! I had a bad experience in Chicago a few years ago. We missed our flight back to Canada and while the airline put us up in a hotel for the night, we got no dinner coupons or anything and it was a FANCY hotel, so the restaurant was expensive. So, instead, we starved until we were on the plane. Not fun.

But I’m sure the summit will be fun!

    Jill –

Sauce wasn’t made from scratch because I didn’t have time and was already starving ๐Ÿ™

Anyway, the sauce doesn’t have any Madison Square Garden in it.

    But… that said….

MSG had a stigma in the 90s that it didn’t deserve. All of a sudden, Chinese restaurants were seen as ‘the devil’ unless they raced to ditch their jar of MSG – It really comes in jars of white crystalline powder – and post a giant sign that said “No MSG” on their windows. The reason for the hype? Lots of people believe they suffer headaches, heart flutters, tingling/burning in the face, etc. after they eat Chinese food…. So far no substantiated evidence exists that support these “MSG-Complex” list of symptoms. Probably because there is no such thing as a “MSG-Complex,” but instead, symptoms may be caused by things like… allergies to gluten, consuming too much sodium and not drinking enough water, or being a hypochondriac that buys those germ wand things as seen on TV… You’ll notice no one calls it a “Salt Complex” when you have a dehydrated headache after eating a bag of potato chips…

MSG is a form of glutamic acid which was originally derived from seaweed by a company called “Ajinomoto” (only add this because it’s fun to say with an angry voice) which literally means something like “The Essence of Flavor”. Now it’s derived from fermented sugar, soybeans, and wheat (other variations probably exist)… Glutamic acids are in almost everything. Specifically… concentrated versions of MSG can be found in kelp, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce – pretty much anything with flavors of savory deliciousness.

I think the stigma must also have something to do with the idea that most people think it’s “cheating” to use MSG since it simply takes whatever dish you have and makes it 5 times better.

Anyway, this comment is getting freaskishly long and it really deserves a book.. All I’m sayin’ is… look into MSG before you think it’s the reason for your symptoms… You might find that you are blaming MSG when you are really just dehydrated or having an adverse reaction to another ingredient – or perhaps the original source of the extracted MSG, etc. Otherwise you’re missing out on an AWESOME cooking ingredient ๐Ÿ˜‰

You also may know more than me and feel free to wallop me with studies because I always like learning more..
