Happy Thursday!
Last night I was talking to my dad and thinking….dang, this year has gone by in the BLINK of an eye. Seriously. I think this has been the fastest year of my life…I can’t believe school is already back in session and fall is right around the corner! Makes you really want to slow down and appreciate moments as they pass….who knows where you might be next year at this time!
Okay, that was my caffeine induced moment. Now back to my morning.
Alarm went off at 6:15, I ate a piece of bread with pb and headed out for a short FAST run. I think I’m starting to get a wee bit nervous because my race is less than two months away and I know time is going to fly by. Even though my shins aren’t perfect, I really have to kick it into high gear now and train smarter and harder. I’m obviously not in this race to win (hahaha) or to even get an awesome time, but I’d like it to be a great experience. So today, two fast miles. I paced at about 8:15-8:30 the whole way and felt really strong. Next up: 7 miles on Saturday morning. Eek! I’m sort of pumped though that next month I’ll be in San Francisco and can do a dry run for the half…..get to know the course a little bit and try my legs out on those lovely hills. Awesome.
Breakfast was overnight oatmeal!
I forgot how much I adore this. For new readers, all I do is the night before I combine 1/2 cup oats with 1/2 cup liquid (I used almond milk) and let it sit in the fridge overnight. This morning I stirred in 1/2 cup greek yogurt and topped it with a banana, cinnamon and raw agave nectar. Mmmmmmmm
Wait! Just now as I write this I realize I forgot the peanut butter!!!!!!!!!!!!! That was a total blonde moment. Wow. I totally meant to put peanut or almond butter on top of this but clearly I’m a little out of it. I thought something was missing! oopsies. That’s pretty funny actually. (laughing out loud at myself as I type this)
Anyways!! I’m headed home to Vero Beach today to visit Christie. We’ve got major girl-talk to catch up on and going home always feels good. Plans include: wine, The Time Traveler’s Wife (!!!), sun, boats, bike rides and awesome food cooked by her mom. Y’all know how much of an awesome chef her mom is….remember when I lived with them?! That seems like forever ago.
Enjoy your day!

August 20, 2009 at 8:43 am*Gasp* I can’t imagine a worse fate than being without peanut butter!
Ok, so that’s not really true… but everything tastes better with peanut butter 😉

August 20, 2009 at 8:54 amHi Jenna, I’ve followed along for too long without saying hello. Now that I am slowly entering into the world of blogging, it’s time to stop lurking. I have been having a lot of similar thoughts lately about how fast the year has gone. I am going to be 31 next week! How did that happen?! You’re a great inspiration for how you’ve handled so much this year…I’ll be continuing to read.

August 20, 2009 at 8:56 amTime flies like crazy, for sure. I still can’t believe that 21 years have gone by for me!!
Enjoy the beach!

August 20, 2009 at 8:57 amI agree, this year is flying by. I can’t believe that my little man will be turning 5 soon. I’ve heard that when you have a child time slips by like the blink of an eye – totally right.
Yummy overnight oats. I do enjoy a bowl of cool oatmeal goodness just as much as I do the warm variety.
I hope you have a fabulous day with Christie. I can’t wait to see what kind of decadent meal her mom prepares. She really is an amazing cook. All the photos you shared with us when you lived there were drool worthy.

August 20, 2009 at 9:12 amSo many of my friends are making grown up decisions at the moment – that’s when I realize that time is really flying by. I’m still figuring out what being a grown up actually means! 🙂
Thanks for the oatmeal recipe – looks yummy. I am guessing you just eat it cold??

August 20, 2009 at 9:37 amYour day sounds lovely!!! I’m doing my first half-marathon on Sept 27 and am pretty freaked out about it! I know I can go the distance (last week I did 11 miles) but am not happy with my time!! I’m getting quicker on my short runs but my long runs keep getting slower. UGH!
Jil
August 20, 2009 at 9:39 amOhh. That overnight oatmeal is a fantastic idea! Perfect for someone who is a lazy with breakfast as I am; thanks for explaining for us newbies!

August 20, 2009 at 9:58 amAnother of my fave overnight oat ideas (sooo nice to have this all ready for ya in the morning!) — 1/2 cup oats, 1/2 cup water, 1/2 cup milk, 1 sliced nanner, 1/4 cup pancake syrup and some flax seed for good measure…. oh yea, and go ahead and add some PB the next morn too!! Heaven in a tupperware container 😉 Have fun in Vero Beach, my grandma lived there and I always remember it being so nice. We are flyin down to FL next week, I am lookin forward to a change from the ol’ VA!! Love your blog btw.
Jess
August 20, 2009 at 10:11 amOh no! I sometimes forget the peanut butter too! I can’t believe I’m coming up on one year of marriage in less than a month. It’s been such a crazy year for me!
Megan
August 20, 2009 at 10:12 amBreakfast without peanut butter is manageable, but rough! Haha, too funny! I want to try your overnight oats with yogurt though…sounds really, really good 🙂
Oh, today sounds like such a great day!!! Girl time is always a good thing. Enjoy The Time Traveler’s Wife…I hope it is as good as the book! Enjoy your day!!
Denise (the apple hill adventurer)
August 20, 2009 at 10:19 amwow .. your girl talk day sounds like something out of a movie.
boats and bikes and wine and good convo! i really wish i knew people where i live, that i could girl talk with. i feel like its so hard to meet people and make friends because i live in the boonies, and there is not much of any community events going on, or anywhere to hang out and meet people :/

August 20, 2009 at 10:20 amYour oatmeal looks delish even without PB. All that cinnamon…YUM!
What you wrote about time flying by really struck a chord with me. Time really does go by fast and it’s important to take time to appreciate your friends and family. Thanks for the reminder and enjoy the day with your friend.

August 20, 2009 at 10:25 amToo funny that you didn’t realize you forgot the PB until you were posting! I would have gone and had a spoonful just to make up for it! Enjoy the day with your BFF.
Sarah
August 20, 2009 at 10:28 amHave a great visit back home with your friend 🙂
Maria
August 20, 2009 at 10:33 amYour overnight oats sound delicious! I never tried them before because I love my bowl steaming hot, but on a summer morning I think the overnight oats would be more comfortable 🙂
I hope you enjoy your day. I want to see the Time Traveler’s Wife too, but need to read the book!
Susan
August 20, 2009 at 10:36 amYou know, when you said your race is in San Fransisco, it never even occurred to me that SF is one of the hilliest cities in the states!! Jeez louise, that takes a lot of guts 😛
I gotta try overnight oats again using your method. Except, I’ll remember the PB 😉
angharad
August 20, 2009 at 10:38 amI like how simple your overnight oats are – I need to try mine out this way since so far mine have not been a succes 🙁 i think simple might be best!

August 20, 2009 at 10:42 amIs it a smart thing to train for a half with an injury? Has your doctor given you the go ahead?

August 20, 2009 at 10:47 amI’m still in denial that this year is halfway over! I love fall and this time of the year but it’s going to be 2010 before we know it!!
Have fun today!

August 20, 2009 at 10:55 amThat oatmeal looks freakin gorgeous! I have never thought to add yogurt to oats, interesting..
Sara
August 20, 2009 at 10:55 amAh, overnight oats. I like those so much, I’ve even missed seeing the pictures of it on your blog! Crazy?? You’re also right about the year flying/not knowing where we’ll be — for example, I never really thought I’d start my own blog, but I have. Take care.

August 20, 2009 at 11:07 amIt really HAS been a super fast year… crazy!

August 20, 2009 at 11:10 amTime is flying by like crazy! And I hear it only gets worse the older we get. Bummer!
I’ve totally forgotten nut butter in a green monster before. Now that was upsetting! You overnight oats still look delicious!
I cannot wait for you to be in San Fran and running the hills. You’ll love it!
Have a blast in Vero!

August 20, 2009 at 11:34 amYou’re right, that 2 months is going to fly by. I can’t believe Summer’s almost over. It feels like it just started, but looking back at how much has changed/all I’ve done in the time makes me wonder how so much can happen in such a short time.
Lia
August 20, 2009 at 11:43 amHopefully your shins are not as bad around race time. 🙁 I also neeeed to try overnight oats because I have never done them before, and they always look and sound so appealing!
sherri
August 20, 2009 at 11:47 ami must try your overnight oats! are you familiar with galloway’s book on running? you would benefit from his advice on hill training. my marathon training plan is a combination of jeff galloway and hal higdon’s training programs. i’m just six weeks away from my first marathon. yikes! btw there’s also a book marathoning for mortals (if i’m not running, i’m reading about running:O). it’s the “regular person’s guide to the joy of running or walking a half-marathon or marathon. there’s some very good advice on nutrition and you would get a kick out of chapter 6. It reads like a menu and includes wine!
Julie
August 20, 2009 at 11:52 amI agree, this year has FLOWN by. It’s September in 2 weeks. Stores are already getting out the Halloween stuff!! What happened to your morning green monsters?!
Ali
August 20, 2009 at 12:12 pmOvernight oats look good. As I ear reading your post, I realized I forgot cinnamon on mine…oops! I hope you like The Time Traveler’s Wife, I am reading it now and going to see it next week.
Lauren
August 20, 2009 at 12:19 pmI’ll be curious to read what you think about The Time Traveler’s Wife. The book was amazing, and I hope the movie is too!
I don’t think I could ever forget peanut/almond butter on oats – in fact, I usually plan the oatmeal mix-ins around what type of nut butter the oats will feature ;). I’m a fiend!
aron
August 20, 2009 at 12:26 pmI just saw Time Travelers Wife on Monday… it was good but of course the book was better, I think thats the case with every book made into a movie though!!
Nice job on the run!! I am near SF and go on runs there a lot if you want to meet up sometime when you are in town! I think going on a practice run of the course is always awesome if you can.

August 20, 2009 at 12:36 pmI think the years always fly by for both students and teachers … and I am both, so I am even more in shock!
Beth @ CrossBorderCravings
August 20, 2009 at 12:49 pmI can’t believe you forgot the peanut butter – that’s my favorite part of oats in the morning! haha – you’ll have to have a spoon later on to make up for it :O)

August 20, 2009 at 1:53 pmI just stumbled across your blog recently, and I have been addicted to it since! Thanks so much for all of your good ideas, and your sense of humor! I love food, and am also training for a half marathon in September. Thank you also for so openly sharing your faith on your blog, you are the first I have come across that has done that.

August 20, 2009 at 1:55 pmI totally know how you feel about time flying. Every year just goes faster and faster. My birthday is Saturday and I cannot believe it – I feel like I just had my last birthday! Getting old is rough!

August 20, 2009 at 1:59 pmYour afternoon sounds amazing! And your perspective on time going by so fast and to enjoy every moment, is so unbelievably true! Just wait, the older you get, the faster it seems to go!
Kate
August 20, 2009 at 2:34 pmI tried overnight oatmeal a few weeks ago. Except, I was too lazy to read the proper amounts of what to put in, so I winged it. I added too much milk, so then when I added the yogurt too, it tasted like the milk had gone bac. Now I see how it works… so thanks 🙂 Sounds yummy when YOU make it!
Voracious Vorilee
August 20, 2009 at 2:43 pmI didn’t have the best luck with overnight oats my first go round, they were tasty but the texture was odd. I’ll have to try it out how you typed it – they look AND sound yummy!
Mary :: A Merry Life
August 20, 2009 at 3:01 pmOvernight oatmeal – WITH peanut butter – sounds soooo good! I’m going to try it for tomorrow. Have fun catching up and doing all those fun things!

August 20, 2009 at 8:17 pmEach year does seem to fly by faster. I feel like I didn’t even have a summer this year because of my internship. And yet while each work day felt extremely long, the entire 10 week internship felt like it flew by within the blink of an eye. Scary, but it reminds us to enjoy every moment of our lives!
