I am a Crazy Person

Hey guys!

How’s your Tuesday going?! I’m honestly feeling a little overwhelmed here right now because I just have a TON going on at the present moment. I’m going to the studio tonight and then taking a 5:45 Bikram class to unwind a bit. It’s funny—I really rarely go to Bikram these days but when I’m stressed out it’s the ONE thing that really releases me. I love the heat, the sweat and the reliability of the 26 poses. When I was in Paris there was a week where I went every single day.

Oh, and I obviously look like a professional athlete now……or just a crazy person

Awesomeness. Lisa really worked on me today and apparently my whole big underlying problem is that I’m VERY VERY VERY unbalanced. It was actually so noticeable when I was looking for it and after she showed me that I couldn’t believe that’s been the problem all these years. My hips are unbalanced and since everything is connected that’s the root cause of my left shin pain. And it explains why I can’t get down in a split with that leg or do anything with that hamstring, really. She gave me a lot of alignment stuff to work on and taped me up for my 10 miles on Thursday. I might have to go back in on Thursday night and be taped up AGAIN so no one in California be alarmed if I show up wearing my new fashion statement this weekend!

My mom and I went out to lunch at the health food store though and that made me feel better. I made a GIGANTIC salad with heaps of chickpea salad, hummus, lentils and white bean salad on top. it was divine!

If it works, that’s awesome! I’m always shocked when someone recognizes something that’s happening with me and then all of a sudden so many things make sense.

I hope the tape helps! I remember seeing the one US volleyball women’s player wearing some of that tape on her arm during the last summer olympics.

That salad looks tasty! I am glad to hear that you know what is wrong and why you have been having pain. Years ago, my sister would complain endlessly about knee pain. My parents took her to a bunch of doctors who all looked at her knee as the source of her problem. Finally, one very smart doctor noticed that it was her hip that was the problem. Her hip issue was causing knee pain. It is always great to figure out the real problem.

I had a lot of IT band/knee problems over the summer and the KT Tape was great! It didn’t slip or get too sweaty like my knee strap. I also like that it comes in pretty colors 🙂

Love, love, love ginormous salads! I had my own for lunch – arugula, sprouts, sunshine burger, hummus, and olive oil. Mmm.

I LOVE THE NATIONAL!!! They are excellent live 🙂 Good luck with your shins – it must be great to find out the underlying problem. Can’t wait to hear about your run after being taped. And finally, that salad looks divine.

I can totally relate to looking like a crazy woman!

I have a lingering shoulder injury from a competitive volleyball career and even now, when I want to play for fun, I have to use tape on my shoulder that appears randomly placed for those not in the know! And when if I intend on strength training at the gym, I do the same. So, we’re both cool! 🙂

Bahaha, you’re just a trendsetter Jenna 😉 I remember seeing the volleyball players wearing neon coloured tape like that in the last Olympics and could not for the life of me figure out what it was. I’ve since read a lot of articles on it, sounds like it really works! Also super happy to hear you know the root of your problem, and hopefully start working on getting it fixed (or, at least bearable). 😀

Very nice! Maybe people will just think you have an odd tattoo? LOL! At least if you were up here in Canada, you’d be wearing pants to cover it when you run!

LOVE the National, by the way. In fact, I was just thinking about Boxer this morning.

    Jenna,

I have been reading your blog for awhile now, and I love it! Have you ever heard of Rolfing? (such an unfortunate name!) I think it would really help balance your hips and whole body. Here is a quick description. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rolfing. Check it out, it has helped a lot of people I know!

I would love to know about the alignment stuff she talked about. I feel that the right side of my body is sorta out of whack and have knee and sometimes hip pain when I run. I do yoga as well and I know it helps with alignment, but if there’s more to try I would love to hear about it!

It sounds like you could also benefit from a chiropractor if it’s an alignment issue…I’ve heard wonderful things about D.O.s — my mother in law was having some trouble recently with something (maybe her back or her hip?). She was also apparently way unbalanced, and the chiropractor realigned her…funny thing is she was also not sleeping well and as soon as she was “realigned,” she hasn’t had any trouble sleeping either. Fascinating!

Glad you got some help with the shins! One of my old roommates had the same problem and would do PT stretches that seemed to help a lot.

You are not crazy. I had pain in my back but never knew why and was told it was just soreness. Then when I had to go to rehab after surgery my PT told me my right hip is out of alignment. It turns out and so my entire right leg turns out and weakens everything. I have to be conscious of it when I walk and run and train because it could cause me problems. He thinks that is what may have ultimately caused the major malfunction in my back.

I’m glad you got answers. And who cares if you have a funny tape job on your leg… at least you feel better.

I have only done Bikram one time but lately I have been itching to go back. At first I was overwhelmed by the heat, but then afterwards, I had never felt so good in my life. I just need to do it already!

Oh Jenna, I’m so glad that you FINALLY discovered the cause of all your shin pains. Hopefully there will be some sort of preventative exercises/stretches you can do in the future.

As for the tape- trust me that your tape job is super mild! As an athlete and sports fan, I have seen some funky looking tape. My brother plays on the AVP, and both the men and women often have the strangest tape jobs on their bodies. Plus you see it all since their “uniforms” are sooo small. If you watched the Beijing olympics you might remember Kerri Walsh had her right shoulder taped. You look awesome!

That Salad looks awesome. Good luck with everything going on right now!

Good luck on working on your alignment. I’m studying for my personal training certification right now and there is a large concentration in one chapter on misalignments and how these issues can affect a person and how they exercise. Very interesting! Hope you can get your issues worked out and move forward with your athletic pursuits!!

    Jenna,

I love Bikram. I have really discovered my love for it this summer. I just went yesterday and it was just what I needed. I always feel so refreshed and wonderful afterwards. I hope you enjoyed it tonight!

Also, I was wondering what does the tape do? I have been having some foot issues and I’m wondering if this could help? I know nothing about taping…so what is it all about??

Who cares what it looks like if it works, right? That’s what I’d say. What are you going to do to work on the unbalanced-ness? That’s interesting to me because my husband is REALLY noticeably unbalanced after a surgery he had from his adolescence. So much so that he has to have one of his shoes built up to make him stable.

Cool! I’m a recent kinesio tape fan myself – it’s PERFECT for light taping of my non-existent arches when I can tell the mileage is straining them. No chafing (so no blisters!) when I run at all. Love that stuff. Good luck!
