Is it Friday Yet?

Good Morning!

This morning I finished off the strawberries from the farmer’s market in a nice hot bowl of oats (not steel cut–Nature’s Path Instant Flax & Oats). I made the oats with 1/2 cup vanilla hempmilk and 1/2 cup water to maximize their creaminess! Yum, yum, yum! I’m tired this morning and already ready for the weekend! Work kept me running last night for almost five hours and tonight it will be the same thing. Hopefully this week will go by quick! I can’t wait for “valentine’s day” on Friday night! 🙂

Yikes, I’m sorry that work, well, overworked you! Today will be my first day back at school since Thursday, and I’m not looking forward to it with all the schoolwork, examinations, a 7-minute speech (!!!); not to mention I have to venture out into 12°F temperatures… ahh, when is Friday?!?! :0D

Those strawberries look like large rubies in your bowl of oatmeal – love it!!

Hope your Tuesday morning goes as smoothly as possible!!

Hey Jenna or Anyone! I’m going to Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse Friday for valentines day! With all this vegetarian talk…I don’t know if it’s all in my head from reading on here or what…but the past few days I haven’t been wanting any meat and when I eat it (turkey and a few times with chicken) it’s just tasted really wierd to me and make me feel kinda queezy. Anyway…I’ve just started to like mushrooms (portebella!) and at Ruth’s Chris they have a grilled portobello mushroom entree I’m dying to try! Here is what it says:
    Grilled Portobello Mushrooms
Marinated Portobello mushrooms on our garlic mashed potatoes, with grilled asparagus, broccoli, tomatoes and sizzling lemon butter.

With the mashed potatoes and lemon butter I’m sure it adds a lot of calories…what could I request to make it a little healthier?! I do plan to indulge a little though…and I don’t eat potatoes very offten…but what would you suggest?!

Those strawberries look amazing!! So bright and sweet looking…:) I can’t wait until summer rolls around and I can start eating more fresh produce rather then relying on frozen from the freezer…theres nothing quite like fresh picked strawberries. 🙂

    Lisa,
DEF request they leave the butter out…or the sauce on the side!! That’s awesome you are getting the grilled portobello entree! Thats exactly what I would get if I go again. Last time I ordered the steak and felt sick all night..it just sort of sat like a stone in my stomach! I would def. get the mashed potatoes, but ask them to leave the “sizzling butter” out! Have fun!!!!

    Jenna, quick question!
When you have your oatmeal in the morning from the stovetop, how much do you make? A 40g serving, or more?

By the way, you’ve inspired me to buy the flax paks, and I added a 1/2 pack in my oatmeal this morning and it was fabulous! I also added a few chocolate chips on the top of my oatmeal, and it got all melty and chocolatey.. yum!! I also made your vegan chocolate chip cookies last night and they were a huge hit!

Hey guys! Yesterday, someone asked about everyone’s food patterns (3 meals versus small mini meals). I was wondering what everyone’s exercise patterns were in relation to food. What do you eat before/after (you may eat nothing) and if you exercise in the morning or afternoon, etc?

    Hi everybody!

My question has to do with exercise as well. I know I need to ask a doctor this, but I’m just wondering what opinions you all have as well.

I have a problem with not having a period. I have a period if I’m taking the pill, but if I stop my period disappears. I am underweight (5’6″, 115), but I eat healthfully and don’t deprive. I have even managed to gain a few lbs. recently. But I still don’t get a period. So I thought maybe I work out too much. I heard that can be a cause. I get some form of exercise 5-7 days a week. Most of these days include 30 to 60 minutes of cardio, which I love. I rarely go over an hour. I vary my workouts a lot. My question is – is this too much? Is it exercise or low weight that causes loss of a period? For example, if I buckle down and gain some more weight can I still work out a lot?

I plan to ask my doctor about this, but I wanted to know if any of you have a comment! Thanks!

Meggie…I have a friend who went through the same thing. She was underweight and lost her period even though she ate really really healthy. I think the doctors said she needed to gain at least 10-15 lbs to be at a healthy weight. That wasn’t very appealing to her but I think she knew it was for her best (and she looks a lot healthier now that she has gained the weight!) She exercised a lot too. She had to start incorporating more healthy fats into her diet. She was offf BC for a while (when she realized she wasn’t having a period) and then the doctors put her back on it for just one month to see if it would kick start her cylce b/c she hadn’t had it in a long time. You should get your period on BC b/c it produces a fake period no matter what (however the bc I used to use would supress mine…anywho I’m not on that one anymore) She also excersied less during that time b/c it would cause stress on a part of her brain (that needs fats to function which she had little of) and that works directly with producing your bodies period so when she worked out it wasn’t doing any good.

It’s a combination of both gaining weight and maybe not working out as much or as intense so you’re not putting too much stress on your brain. Above all…you really need to see your doctor about this issuse b/c like I said…everyone’s body is different!

    Hi Meggie,

I am in a similar situation as you. I’m 5’3 and weigh about 100. I think my lowest was 96, but honestly I don’t weigh myself because I don’t want to be concerned with a number. Anywho, I was on the pill (Yasmin for like 6 years) I quit taking it just because I wanted to let my body be natural again. Plus, I’m married so while we are not trying for a baby it wouldn’t be a bad thing either. Anywho, after quitting the pill and not having a period for 4 months I went to see my OBGYN. She said that regardless of weight if you take the pill you will have a period. So, jsut because you get a period on the pill doesn’t mean your body is healthy. SHe said if you are not having a period off the pill (especially since before I started the pill I was SO regular) than there is an underlying issue. She told me that I will probably need to gain weight before I can have a baby and she put me back on the pill since we weren’t trying. She did a blood work-up and found no reason why I shouldn’t be getting my period so I think my weight is to blame. I’m currently working on eating more and often (and eating two servings of ice cream instead of one) 🙂 I’m hoping to put on about 5-7 lbs. stop the pill and get my period. We’lls ee though.

In your case it sounds like your are doing far to much exercise for your low body weight. I would increase your food intake or cut back on the exercise a little bit. I know it’s hard. I too like to work out. I typically run a couple of times a week for 25-30 minutes and lift weights on the other days and break one or two days. I’m not too vigorous but it’s the perfect amount to make me feel good.

Me not getting my period was a wake-up call that while my healthy living intentions were good they were not good for my body. Not getting a period is not normal it’s your bodies way of saying “help, somethings not right” Just my 2 cents!

I’ve never posted here before, but I thought I’d contribute my food and exercise habits. I typically eat 3 meals a day with a rare snack in between meals. I usually exercise (although a cold/cough has been slowing me down for the last week) 5-6 days a week. I run 3 times during the week for 40-45 minutes (10 min mile) and then do a longer run (6-9 miles) on the weekend. I also try to do at least 3 strength and/or pilates workouts during the week.

    Meggie-

Lisa gave you some great advice! Also, how vigorous are your workouts? You may want to try decreasing the length or intensity of your workouts and see if that helps at all. You definately want to see your doctor, especially if this has been going on for a while!

    Meggie-

My understanding of loss of a period is a result of body fat percentage being too low, not weight being too low. Obviously these two things are correlated, but my point is that if you gain a ton of weight in muscle it won’t help your situation. I am speaking from personal experience- so please don’t take this as medical advice but rather as something to ask your doctor about. Hope that helps a little!

    VeggieGirl-
Do I remember correctly that you are trying to GAIN weight? If so can you send me a copy of your meal plan too?! 🙂 What is your email? Thanks!
