Make Like The Easter Bunny

Good morning! Happy Saturday!

This morning I hopped out of bed like an Easter bunny at 5:15 (I’m corny…what can I say?) to get ready for my weekly long run. My pre-run snack of choice was, as usual, a piece of Ezekiel toast with almond butter and half a banana:

Works like a charm every time 🙂

I worked on some emails, FINALLY got caught up on the blogworld (hi!), put on my running skirt and was out the door. I had to pick a new route this morning for my 5 mile run because there was a local 5K going on downtown. Originally I had planned on running this race with my mom but I really want to work on controlling my speed, especially on pavement, and with a trip to the physical therapist on Monday I didn’t want to try anything risky for the shins. It made me sad though to know a fun race was going on not even a mile away and I was running by myself! 🙁

The first mile was tough, of course. It was still totally dark out and I wasn’t 100% warmed up yet. I turned up my ipod though and thought about my girls— Meghann, Caitlin and Abbie —running MUCH longer races at the same time as me, and was filled with endurance to keep on going. Here are my final stats:

I really tried to control me speed today because the majority of my run was on pavement down neighborhood streets (there was no grass). Sometimes I would look down at my Garmin and it would say 7:30 or even 8:00 and I would force myself to go a little slower. It sorts of stinks a little bit because I KNOW I have the ability to go fast but my shins just won’t cooperate with me right now. Oh well, shins, I will give you all the time you need and then I can unleash my true speed in San Fran 😉

When I got home I stretched and made a big bowl of oats for breakfast! 🙂

Oh! It was sooooo good today. Here was the amazing combo:

  • 3/4 cup oats made with 1/2 cup almond milk + 1.25 cups water
  • 1/2 banana
  • tons of cinnamon + pinch of sea salt
  • big scoop of almond butter
  • heated up frozen blueberries!

It was so pretty, too, and took me a good 15 minutes to eat….perfect timing for me to ice my shins down!

I desperately wanted a green smoothie this morning, but I’m at Ryan’s and he doesn’t have spinach OR a Vita Mix so I guess I’m out of luck. I think I will ask him if he will take me to the health food store to get some fruit/veggie juice though when he wakes up 🙂

I’m off to hit the showers! Today I think we might be going out on a friend’s boat to relax and soak up some sunshine. I’ll catch up with you at lunch!

There’s nothing like blueberries in your morning oats! I hope your shin splints feel better soon. I hear those can be really painful.

Slowing down showed amazing restraint! I bet if you keep taking it slow, your sins will cooperate. Have a nice Easter Jenna and family.

Hope your shins continue to mend. Good do to some training on pavement because the SF race course for the Nike 1/2 is pretty much all concrete.

I made a green smoothie after seeing yours yesterday and I woke up craving one this morning, so I’m finishing it right now.

I’ve been contemplating a juicer, but do you think that the smoothies are better because you keep the fiber from the fruits and veggies? I’m sure my husband and bank account want me to believe that.

Good job on your run. I went on a long run too, 16 miles. I have the Garmin 405 so I’m not familiar with your model (305), but on the 405 there is an option where you can set a virtual running partner and it helps with maintaining a constant speed because if you get below your partner the watch will beep and let you know. You might also want to try running tempo runs to help with keeping a consistent speed.

YUM! Your oats looked amazing from this am!!! I love heated up frozen blueberries. I am in the middle of baking Veggie girls blondies right now….hoping they turn out ok. However, they won’t be vegan b/c I used Ghiradelli choc chips….oh well…..I am still excited to try them after hearing how delish they are!
