More Oats, Please

Hi guys! Happy Friday!

I’ve had a rather painful day at work. No burns but I smashed my fingers in between a wall and a heavy cart and they are already turning black and blue :(. Along with a migraine, its not pleasant! However, I just popped a feverfew tablet (an herb I have found helpful in migraine relief) and am about to do some yoga, which most always nixes my headaches in the bud.

This morning I snacked on this bar—

Which I LOVE , but I was super snacky all morning!!!! By 6:15 I was famished and started picking at leftover pecans from the pecan sticky buns that I had baked. I finally took at break at 7:30 and ate a very filling breakfast of oatmeal!

Look at that HUGE bag of oats!!!!!!!!!

I am just loving this new larger portion that I ate yesterday and today. Today I packed 3/4 cup oats, 1 1/2 cups skim milk, pumpkin seed butter and cinnamon/brown sugar. It was awesome. However, I think I will stick to making my oats with water in the future while at work because I had a couple almost major oatmeal explosions in the break room microwave today. Milk seems to foam up way more than water does when you cook in the micro….it also took a solid 5 minutes to make this, which cut into my 30 minute break time that I like to spend reading, drinking my tea and waking up Ryan. 😉  But then again, it did lend a super creamy and delicious texture to my oaties!

For the remainder of the morning I just baked, baked and baked. Stopping to taste-test (hehe) a pecan sticky bun and some new rye bread that had just come out of the oven (tiny bites of each!). At 12:30 when I got off, I met Courtney, a blog reader for lunch! Courtney actually recognized me from the blog at a yoga class one day and we really hit it off! She went to the detox weekend a couple weeks ago and goes to school at UF. She headed up my way this afternoon and we had a lovely lunch together sitting outside! She talked me into trying one of these, which she swears by

I’ve always been scared of these but today I LOVED it!!! Really really yummy. Too bad this bad boy was almost $4!!! Insane! Good for a treat though and really healthy as well. I wish I could afford to drink more! 🙁

As for my meal, I got the chicken tabbouli wrap from the deli at Greenwise. It consisted of a spinach wrap with rotisserie chicken, fresh tabbouli and a splash of herb dressing. It rocked!

I demolished it!

After lunch and chatting, I cruised around the store for a few groceries (yes, I clearly cannot leave my place of work….hahaha):

img_4563

Yummy fennel (!!), BEETS, yams, yogurt, bars, chocolate (!!!!!!!!), grapies, scottish oats, pure maple syrup, canola oil, whole grain quinoa, navel oranges, split pea soup, white kidney beans and, last but not least, special new bubble bath!

I’m finally home now and about to do some yoga. I might do a 90 minute download today….we’ll see. Yoga reallyyyyyyy helps my migraines. Its amazing, really. Sometimes when nothing else will work I do a few sun salutations and WHAM! its a goner.

See you for dinner!

Do you think that oat bran has a different texture than oatmeal? I just can’t eat oatmeal sometimes because of the texture, but I’m wondering if I would like oat bran…

Jenna, you could make a large batch of oats on your day off and just reheat when you are ready to eat them. They just need a little extra liquid when it is time to reheat. You can also freeze already cooked oats. Otherwise, you need a really big bowl and to stir often when doing oats with milk in the micro, I learned that by making MANY messes!

Good idea on the make ahead oatmeal Beadie! That would save a lot of your time and microwave worry !
I find steel cut or scottish oats both work very well for make ahead oats.
I have to confess I have been microwaving my rolled oats and a few days ago switched to stovetop-what an improvement in the taste/texture.I couldn’t believe the difference. And it only takes 5 minutes(as opposed to 2 + in microwave)so no big diff in time as long as I remeber to soak pot so it cleans easily!
Anyone else find stovetop tastier too??

Hey Jenna!! I just started doing yoga about 3 weeks ago b/c I got sick of running and doing the elliptical all the time, and i can already see a difference in my body!! I look more toned and I feel great! It is the main form of exercize I have been doing (havent even been doing cardio) and I am just amazed that I am seeing results both physically and mentally b/c so many people underestimate the effects of yoga! Thank you for introducing me to it~
Question: Do you feel different without your am fruit with breakie (positive or negative effects on your body or energy)??
    Thanks girl

      mh,

Honestly I have no idea. I don’t notice a difference with out without personally but I’m just trying the Ayurvedic way right now to test the waters.

Jenna, have you been doing more yoga recently? Maybe I just haven’t noticed it before, but do you practice every day? I’m trying to get into it but I rarely can do it more than once a week. Should I just do a few minutes here and there if I can. Is it worth it? Thanks!

      Elina,

Since I started my new job I have been practicing more….I used to practice 6 days a week and I’m trying to get back into it. My new years resolution was to “work out less and do yoga more” so I didn’t join a gym when moving here and have just been trying to fit in at least an hour every day of yoga. The results have been amazing 🙂 I actually do it more right now for sleep than anything else exercise related. It seems that the days when I don’t do my yoga are the nights when my insomnia flairs. I would just do it whenever you can. Try to set aside a time period that you can dedicate…whether its 10 minutes, 30 minutes or even an hour. I think every little bit helps!

    Jenna,
I drink Blueberry and Strawberry Kombucha at least 3 times per week. It’s excellent if you’re trying to wean yourself off of diet soda. SO good for you!. Yes, it’s expensive though. SIGH

Hmm, so that’s why my oats used to explode all the time in the micro! I will be sure to try water next time.

Hey Jenna! It’s great to see you tried kombucha! Isn’t it great?! I actually “brew” my own because the retail price is so crazy. It’s *very* easy to do…even easier than your sourdough breads! You brew some black tea with sugar, pour it over a “mushroom” and let it sit for a few days. I’d be happy to send you some starter if you’re interested.

to make it easier in the mornings, try combining your oats, spices, water/milk the night before. it takes less time to cook, it is much less bubbly, and then you’d only have to take one container with you! i do things every night so i am sure to get my oats 🙂

I use 1/2 water and 1/2 milk when I microwave my oats and I really like the consistency.

$4 for a drink? There better be vodka in there!
