Breakfast

New Breakfast

This morning I tried something different—Nature’s Path Instant Oatmeal (Flax & Oats). Generally I really don’t like instant oatmeal. It just never seems like enough to fill me up….that maple and brown sugar instant quaker I had when I was little doesn’t cut it anymore. This stuff was pretty good though!!!

I bought it yesterday just to have some variation in my breakfasts and I think I really like it. The flax seeds look like little ants and its a tad more sweeter than what I’m used to, but surprisingly it filled me up! I added a banana and 5 ounces of 1% milk to it before heating. I will def. make this again when I am pressed for time in the morning!

just out of curiousity…how does that add up to 366 kcal? I only ask becuase usually when I’m eating instant oatmeal in a pinch, the packet is about 150kcal, with the addition of a banana usually is 250-ish…and then your 5oz of 1% milk…adds about 70kcal…still a bit short. Not that it matters to the “T” about the count, but like you were saying, the instant packets usually don’t cut it for me…haha but I’m now eager to try this brand, sounds good with the flax! Have a good day!

    hk,

that little packet was 200 calories (because of the flax) then I added 5 ounces of 1% milk (61 calories) and one medium banana (105 calories)….adds right up! I picked this brand because it was high in calories…more so than other instant kinds…I thought that with more calories it would keep me full longer and i was right!

Jenna, I asked the other night about whether at all steak places you can ask for it dry and you recommended asking the waitress how its prepared. How would you recommend asking the waiter without appearing awkward or high maintenance? Any recommendations would be most appreciated. I have no problem when its things like a salad and asking for the dressing on the side, but my issue comes to main dishes when they arrive dripping in oil or butter, I never know how to handle it without appearing to “high maintenance.” Can’t wait to see what you bake today 🙂

Oh this is random, Sara F. you mentioned a Greek restaurant you go to in St. Louis. I have cousins there, maybe next time I visit we will go there. What is the name?

    Laura,

I would just ask them simply for “no butter”. I dont think that is too high maintenance at all…..I think its just being nutritionally aware! I wouldnt feel funny asking that at all. I full plan to next time I’m ordering a steak now that I know how they are usually prepared!! A heart attack on a plate!!

And, no baking today! Its a holiday! I’m off of school and am just going out to lunch with my mom then going to an eye doctor appt then driving back to orlando (once my eyes arent dilated anymore!)

    off to the gym! 🙂

I had that oatmeal for breakfast this morning too! I had the maple nut flavour, which is a little on the sweet side, but it’s pretty good and I find it makes for a fairly filling breakfast 🙂

Thanks Jenna, sorry, but I have on more similarly related question. Its more, know that I know thats how they do it for stake, I can just say dry, but I mean like if I’m ordering fish. Do you really say how is it prepared when you are out? Maybe I am just overanalyzing, I always feel like I am the only one making adjustments and the waiter hates it.

Morning Jenna! Everyone’s made me want to see that movie so badly now!

    Two random questions:

You said you like garden burger, have you ever had boca burgers or is it just a personal preference? Maybe I’ll try garden burger.

Also, is there a difference is soup making using dried versus canned beans, you seem to prefer dried.

    Hi Jenna (or anyone else),

I hope your enjoying your day off. I too, have today off and I’m loving it! I was just curious if you knew of a website where I can enter all my food intake and see if I’m meeting my nutritional needs. I do not want a calorie counter. I do not want to count calories in leiu of eating healthy, balanced meals. Like you, I want to focus on listening to my body and what it wants. I have seen calorie counting become too unhealthy and would just like to monitor meeting my dietary needs. Thanks!

I’ve tried that oatmeal in the past, but one thing that really irks me about Nature’s Path products is that they feature WHOLE flax seeds, which CANNOT be digested in the body – they should be ground in order to obtain proper nutrients.

    Jenna,

I really liked the Quaker vanilla flax almond instant oatmeal too. It’s all natural. I think I would add a little extra oats to it to bulk it up some but the taste was great (a little sweet, but fun for a change). This kind looks good too!

    Kelly-
I’m no expert on the subject, but I used nutritiondata.com to find the recommended values of nutrients for my specific size and activity level. It does give you a recommended number of calories, but you can just ignore that number and look at the suggested amounts of things like carbs, protiens, fats, and vitamins and compare this to what you eat on average. The nice part of the site is that if you come up lacking in a certain nutrient, you can use their search tools to find foods high in that nutrient. It’s kind of a fun sight to mess around with. (I typically use the “daily needs calculator”, and the “nutrient search tool”)

If you’re looking for daily needs and requirments for intake I would suggest you look at mypyramid.gov. It stresses meeting suggested intake of the different food groups, and you can personalize it by inputting your height, weight, and typical activity level. Its a good guide, hope that helps!

    Laura,

I never say “dry”…I just simply ask for “no butter”. Its easier that way and you wont feel funny! And….I usually DONT ask how things are prepared….maybe I should….but when I go out its usually a special occasion since during the week all I do is cook healthy meals for myself at home. I don’t mind splurging on the weekends since I’m not on a diet or anything. I WILL ask for no butter when at a steak place now!!

    Kelly,

mypyramid.gov is a good one for analyzing nutritional needs and that is what I have used for various nutritional projects i’ve done in the past. I’ve also used that on clients before to analyze their nutritional needs and its worked very well!

    Veggiegirl,

I know!! I remembered you said that last time. Unfortunately I remembered AFTER I bought it! I wont buy this again but I will eat the remaining 7 packets because I spent the money! Oh well…thanks for the info!

    Kath,

I’ve seen that but never tried it! I like variation so I might pick some up next week….sweet is fun once in a while! 🙂

    Oh, and Laura,

I like Gardenburger Original veggie burgers because I simply love the taste. they don’t have soy in them and aren’t meant to taste like a beef burger, which I find refreshing. They are made with brown rice, cheese and veggies and I am addicted to them! I have tried boca burgers and while there’s nothing really wrong with them, I just prefer the taste of gardenburgers more!
