Nightmare Headache

Bleh. I woke up this morning with an absolute screaming migraine. I went to bed last night with a headache but I assumed it was from being out in the hot sun all day long…..but then during the night that normal headache turned into a nightmare migraine :(. Not fun!! I have a huge knot in the back of my neck and I think that could be the cause of this morning’s headache…

I knew I had to eat something filling immediately when I got up so I could take some medicine. I had two kashi Go Lean blueberry waffles with a spoonful of almond butter and a small sliced banana as well as a yogurt.

After having some protein and carbs I could take two Excedrin Migraine (not my best option but I was out of my Rx for migraines). I also got a cup of black coffee and took a feverfew tablet. In about an hour, after I was all hyped on waaaay too much caffeine, my migraine slowly went away. It’s about gone now but I still have that horrible knot in the back of my neck and feel all around jittery and tense. I don’t know if I slept wrong or did something while lifting yesterday, but it’s a nightmare! I wish I could have a massage :(.

Anyways, I’m back in Orlando now and have a TON to do today before school. I’m off to make a quick lunch and head to Publix for some groceries…back in a bit!

Hey Jenna! Sorry to hear you’re not feeling well. I just wanted to thank you for the recommendation of the Outlander series. I’ve just finished the first book and am starting on the second and I love it so far 🙂 My husband bought me the whole series for my birthday so I definitely have a good deal of reading ahead of me!

I always, always get horrible headaches when my neck is tense. I was actually just thinking this morning that I need to go to yoga tomorrow because I can feel it coming on.

I hope you feel better soon! I recently discovered that yoga really helps when I get migraine headaches. It’s just really hard to find the motivation to do yoga when you’re pulsing with pain.

    Sorry you’re not feeling well!

I have a question for you regarding protein shakes…

I usually drink a strawberry smoothie in the mornings (strawberries, yogurt, apple juice and milk) and it doesn’t fill me up very much. This morning, I tried something new – a chocolate pb shake with frozen banana and chocolate protein powder. It was great and I’m still not starving nearly 4.5 hrs later (I’m ALWAYS hungry)

I have an office job, so I’m just at my computer until 5pm when I go to the gym. Is it silly to be drinking this protein shake in the morning, since I’m not active all day? Or does it not really matter when I get my protein in?

Jenna, I’m sorry to hear about your migraine! I’m a chronic migraine sufferer (and so far all the preventative and treatment meds I’ve tried don’t work!) and I had a really bad one yesterday, so I know whatchya goin through! I know a lot of people say not to exercise when you’re experiencing or recovering from a migraine, but I’ve found that if I have time to take a long walk outside (wearing sunglasses, to shield my eyes from too much light), really helps me “recover” and kind of get back on track. It really relieves that little headache that still lingers after a migraine.

Sorry to hear about your headache. I also used to wake up in the mornings with awful headhaches and then I discovered NIGHTGUARDS!!! I went to my first appointment with a new dentist back in Dec. 2007. She was examining my jaw, when she asked my if I ever woke up with a tense/knot in my neck and a headache in the mornings. She said she could hear my jaw cracking on the left side of my face. She said that at night I was clenching my jaw and grinding my teeth so hard that I was causing tremendous pressure on my jaw resulting in headaches and a tense/knot in my neck. So I was fitted for a nightguard, and I’ve been wearing it EVERY night since DEC.2007 and I’m so HAPPY to say that I haven’t woken up with a single headache since.
I think my condition in called TMJ?
So my recommendation to you is to ASK your dentist to check your jaw and to subscribe a NIGHTGUARD ASAP!!!

    lucy,

It really doesn’t matter when you get your protein in, just as new studies have shown that it really doesn’t matter what time you eat…it’s WHAT you eat! If you are looking to gain more muscle, you should be eating MORE protein on the days that you are lifting rather than the days you are more sedentary but a protein shake can’t hurt anything!

    Vegantickles,

I too suffer from terrible migraines and have thought that my teeth grinding could be contributing to the problem. Did you get your nightguard from the dentist or over the counter?

    Thanks.

    Hey Jenna-
I suffer with migranes (about three we week!) and have seen two different neurologists and other specialists and tried every migrane med there is. Nothing had worked. BUT! Last week, I went to see my new family doctor and he stuck his fingers in my ears and instantly said that I had TMJ and to go to the dentist. I went to the dentist and he said that I clench my teeth at night and that is what is causing my horrible headaches/migranes in the morning when I wake up. He also said that TMJ can cause severe neck and back pain as well as many other symptoms such including anxiety attacks and heart palipitations. When I read your blog, your symptoms sound alot like mine so I hope it helps you out!
