Breakfast/ Dinner

Oh, Happy Day

It’s official. I am in love with my new apartment. The outside is terribly tacky (trust me on this) but the inside is great! I can’t wait to give y’all a tour once things are a little more organized. There’s lots of windows and sunlight always seems to be streaming in. Plus, there’s a pool. Priorities, people. One of the boyfriend’s friends from home is actually moving in directly two floors below me so we are all going to be one big happy family.

After lugging up one more load last night I declared it time for a burrito.

IMG_7400
I met the boy at this little Mexican hole in the wall and while we had a bit of trouble finding it (read: me getting incredibly frustrated and almost running over the curb), it was so worth it! This was a vegetarian burrito with no sour cream and it was filled with pinto beans, avocado and veggies with spicy salsa. I’m incredibly spoiled with delicious Mexican food here in California…love love love!
Moving all day + burrito in my belly = passing out.
I woke up in an incredibly great mood this morning because………….
(drum roll please)
IT’S VEGGIE BOX DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I joined the CSA program with Redwood Empire Farm here in Santa Rosa and have been waiting like a little kid in December for this magical day to arrive. The day of my first veggie box! Every Thursday all summer long I will be picking up my box filled with local organic produce from Three Dog Yoga (the drop-off spot). For only $20 a week, it’s a really affordable way to eat well and get yo veggies!
I don’t know whats in my box today but rumor has it, there are fava beans. And I just so happen to have a fava bean hummus recipe that I’ve been dying to try (Thanks, Kendall-Jackson!).
Is it normal I am THIS excited for a box of vegetables?
Because I am.
And I’m even more excited to put them in my new kitchen. Fava bean hummus in my new kitchen….DOES IT GET ANY BETTER????
Anyways, because I’m moving and my life and sanity is scattered between two cities, I ate a simple little breakfast this morning.

IMG_7401
I think these Amazing Grass protein bars are the only bars that actually fill me up for a meal. They have 270 calories and 12 grams of protein and I always feel great after eating them. If they fill me up, they will fill you up. I wake up a ravenous beast in the morning. Just ask Dexter.
I was supposed to go on a 5 hour bike ride today but I’m rainchecking it. I feel a lot better but still am congested and have a cough and don’t want to push it. As anxious I am about the Fondo next weekend, I think it would be more detrimental for me to ride today when I’m not feeling 100%.
Check out my latest Health article here. And have a lovely day. I shall return with a bounty of veggies.

AKSDLJFLASKDJFLK;ASDJFKLSDF!!! BOX OF VEGGIES!! coooooooool. If it is wrong to be this excited about veggies, I don’t want to be right! Seriously, I am going to look into this in my area too. Also, I’d do the same thing…skip the workout, if something is still in your system, working out like that might bring it back out again! Best to leave it alone πŸ™‚

I don’t know if you’ve shared the extent of your training here, but I think the self-professed ‘slacking’ and skipped rides are a real slap in the face to all the people you asked to donate money to your ride. True, the money still goes to a good cause, but that is not the spirit of what the money was pledged for. I appreciate that your life is stressful but then perhaps you should shy away from such huge undertakings and not ask for money.

And I’m jealous of your CSA box too!! That will be awesome. I can’t wait until the organic farm stands open up here. Another month or so I think.

Um I LOVE my CSA. It’s like Christmas every day (and I’m Jewish!). Sometimes I think I’m weird for being really excited about the (BEST EVER) strawberries, rainbow chard, and radishes, but at least I know I’m not the only one. And cheers to supporting local farmers! I think everyone should do it who has the financial means…and it’s really not that much money when you compare it to buying organic at the store, or going out to eat instead of staying in because you have so much frikkin salad that you NEED to eat it for lunch every day.

I had veggies delivered to my door last summer, it was hands down the most fun part of my week. All day at work I’d be in anticipation of what was in the box, then rush home, open it, oooh and awww and then I would spend the next couple of hours on the trusty internet finding recipes for all the vegetables. And then I want to eat it all in one sitting. Clearly, not the way it is intended. I would have to hold myself in check.

Also, I’m interested a little bit more in hearing your thoughts about the upcoming bike race. I have been following yours and Caitlin’s fundraising and training and was curious if you have accomplished your fundraising goal and training objectives? I know your training page said that you are short on the fundraising amount but am unsure if this was a team goal or were you originally planning to raise the entire $5,000 on your own? Is this something you would do again or recommend? Do you feel prepared? I think it sounds like fun and I wish you luck. You have raised over $1600 and this is commendable. I would love to see a pre-Fondo post and I’m sure everyone who has supported you financially would as well!!

I just would like to say to those talking/commenting on “supporting” jenna for the ride that she’s doing – and being hard on her about it…that your not “supporting” her – your donating the money to a charity and a worthy cause…so to think otherwise and be nasty is in very poor taste….

  • Olivia
    May 13, 2010 at 4:26 pm

Oh my! I was not trying to be hard on Jenna or nasty with my comment above! The 100 mile bike race is a huge undertaking and enough a part of the blog to have its own separate page. And so many readers have donated money to charity IN SUPPORT OF JENNA and what she is doing, which is admirable! I was just interested in hearing about her experience, since I have done a few short road bike races and would like to do more longer ones in the future, possibly for fundraising purposes. My husband does a 150 mile fundraising ride each year, but his fundraising tactics are different (smaller-scale) because he doesn’t have blog. No judgments here – Jenna has raised $1600 more for charity than I have this year!

Oh, the talk of a mystery CSA box makes me miss ours so much. We decided not to do one this year since a) our garden produced a lot last year and b) we have a farmer’s market very nearby. But, nothing beats getting a box and then planning a week’s meals around the produce. Love it. And of course we haven’t even begun our garden so who knows how that will go.
