Gooood morning!
Check out the lovely rainy backdrop for my oatmeal this morning—
Yes. Apparently it does rain in the state of California. Who knew?! This is the first rain I’ve witnessed since moving here and before this, I was convinced we had perfect weather all the time. Good thing I can wear jeans and boots to work!
Oatmeal was probably the best bowl I’ve made in a really really long time. I used:
- 1/2 cup oats
- 1/2 cup water + 1/2 cup soymilk
- sea salt, cinnamon
- 1 banana
- few dried bing cherries
- spoonful of trader joe’s pumpkin butter
- BIG spoonful of almond butter
The almond butter literally melted and made a “blanket” over the whole bowl. It was awesome.
It’s definitely a ponytail, jeans day around here. I’m not sure who in their right mind wants to hike up through the valley when we are experiencing heavy wind and rain but we’ll see….I actually think I’ll be behind a desk for the good majority of the day so at least I’ll stay dry and warm there.
See you tonight!

October 13, 2009 at 8:25 amCan you tell us what you actually do at your new job? It sounds like a little of everything, but I want to know more!
Good luck staying dry today.

October 13, 2009 at 8:30 amjen,
I do do a bit of everything! I do most of their social media (running their facebook and twitter pages), I work in the tasting room and give tours and I also am an event coordinator and party planner. So yes…basically I do it all.

October 13, 2009 at 8:34 amDo you put the dried cherries in with the oats or at the end when everything is cooked? I put them in at the beginning and they plump up and are so, so delicious… I don’t think I could ever eat my oatmeal without them now 🙂

October 13, 2009 at 8:35 amThat oatmeal picture looks soooo good! Especially with the rain in the back drop. Have a great day at work! Hope it doesn’t rain too much!

October 13, 2009 at 8:40 amHa ha–welcome to Northern California! When you think about it, CA is a huge state and NorCal is SO different than sunny SoCal. Where I lived it rained a TON and it was gray and foggy a lot. I still loved it though.
Amanda (modernation)
October 13, 2009 at 8:41 amGet ready for the winter, Jenna. Winter in NorCal equals rain. We are in Sacramento and it is pouring here this morning. But I think in a couple days it will clear back up again! Good luck today – about to go make some oats myself!

October 13, 2009 at 8:52 amThat oatmeal looks fabulous! It’s raining cats and dogs here in Sacramento. I just hope it clears up before tomorrow so I can run outside, otherwise it’s going to be a treadmill kind of day : (

October 13, 2009 at 8:52 amIt’s raining in my neck of the woods too.
I find that martha natha peanut butter is the meltiest (for me) when it comes to oat topping! Love it.

October 13, 2009 at 9:01 amIt definitely rains in CA, but not too badly! Seattle, where I live, on the other hand has nothing but rain and cold. Time for flannel sheets!

October 13, 2009 at 9:01 amYour oats sound amazing!
Boo to rain! Hope it clears up for you!

October 13, 2009 at 9:03 amLOL I agree you must be thinking SoCal weather, expect lots of rain. And this year more then others it is supposed to be an El Nino year. Expect a cold wet winter.

October 13, 2009 at 9:04 amHang in there with the yoga studio. I tend to be a snap decision kind of person but I also think it helps to try out different instructors and classes. I went from taking yoga in a dedicated studio to at a gym and I thought I would not like it at all. The classes seemed very athletic focused and not at all zen, I had to get used to treadmills going outside, but now I love it and have a favorite instructor I connect with. I try to rarely miss her class.

October 13, 2009 at 9:07 amSF Bay area has roughly 2 main seasons: wet and dry. We will literally go all summer without a drop of rain, but get some major storms from Nov usually (starts up in Oct) through April or so. The first year I lived in Berkeley, it rained 25 days in April! We were beating Seattle!

October 13, 2009 at 9:34 amTotally off oatmeal/rain subject here – this morning I was thinking about my race day Sunday… and I remembered you’re doing your half on Sunday too… and then I thought, “oh my gosh, her race will start at least an hour after mine (time zone differences) and she’ll still be done running way before me! What am I doing?!” lol Incase I don’t get a chance to say it between now & then – best of luck on Sunday! 🙂

October 13, 2009 at 9:39 amHere on the Monterey Coast the storm is Freddy-Scary this AM. Dark, spotty power, gale-like wind, falling limbs, sirens, wild waves, creaking door, sheets of swirly rain sheets and visions of a slasher under the bed. Yiiiieeow!

October 13, 2009 at 9:42 amYour oats look so good. I wish I was able to wear jeans and boots to work. Hope you find a good yoga studio nearby.

October 13, 2009 at 10:02 amThe view outside of your window reminds me of the chimney tops in Mary Poppins for some reason. N. California = London in my head??? 🙂
Have a great day!

October 13, 2009 at 10:03 amI’m loving the rain right now here in San Jose. There’s nothing like the sound of drops hitting your windowpane to lull you into late-morning nap.

October 13, 2009 at 10:11 amThe genius of the pumpkin butter – it is so delicious! I enjoyed it on my TJ’s crumpets last weekend. I also put it on Caramel-Apple-Spice cupcakes – WAY better than frosting. 😉

October 13, 2009 at 10:13 amIt’s pouring here in Boston, too! I was actually oddly excited about it, though, because I just bought these cute new rain boots. Finally, a chance to wear them!! When I got to work today, my feet were dry as a bone =D

October 13, 2009 at 10:17 amHow early do you eat breakfast?? It always looks like it’s still dark out when you post pictures! Oh and it’s definitely raining in upstate NY today. 🙁 Rainy and chilly.

October 13, 2009 at 10:27 amYes, it’s rainy and yucky outside. I don’t love these wet days but I try to remind myself that it’s much better than the alternative. I’ve lived in CA my entire life and have experienced droughts before and hope that we can avoid that in the future. So if rain is what it takes, I’ll just have to dress warm and move some of my workouts indoors.

October 13, 2009 at 1:56 pmAll I could think of when I read this post is the song “It Never Rains in Southern California.” Having previously lived in L.A. for 8 years, this was pretty much true. I guess Northern Cali is immune to this phenomenon! LOL.
Love those oats! I need to do a pumpkin oat combo, pronto.

October 13, 2009 at 7:10 pmThe oatmeal looks lovely. I love the way pb and ab melt into hot foods. Makes them go great on toast!

October 15, 2009 at 8:51 amIt’s Friday AM. The fierce storm hit the Monterey Coast and dropped more rain in than in 50 years….the power was out for two+ days in Carmel, Monterey and Pacific Grove. Back to sun and lots of trees down everywhere. Two deer are outside my window munching on moss blown off trees…they love the stuff.
