Good morning!
All this talk about being motivated and what did I do this morning? Flipped off the alarm when it went off at 6:15 to run. I was sooo tired and just couldn’t do it! Now I wish I had, just to get it out of the way but I guess I’ll run my 3 miles tonight instead once it cools back down a little. Ooooh well. 😉
More steel cut oats for breakfast!
- steel cut oats
- splash of almond milk, sea salt
- 1 banana
- almond butter
- 1 tbsp-ish Udi’s granola
- pure maple syrup
SO good! I know making steel cut oats takes longer but it’s so worth it and once you make a large batch, you can have super quick breakfasts all week long! I made a cup of oats (4 servings) on Monday, divided each serving into little plastic baggies, and all I have to do in the morning is re-heat. Breakfast is ready in 1 minute. So quick and delicious! I love the “pop” of steel cut oats…more texture than just rolled oats and more chew.
Partaking in one of my biggest guilty pleasures this morning—getting my hair highlighted 🙂 I don’t really go shopping very often, don’t care tooooo much about shoes, purses or other “girly” things, but I will make any and all exception for good food, wine and highlights. Life’s simple pleasures, no?
Mikan is waiting by the door for his walk….I’ll be back!

September 10, 2009 at 8:49 amooohhhh you must post pics! I have not had my hair dyed or highlighted in years. I made a new years resolution almost 3 years ago to grow my hair out and donate it – had no idea it would take my hair so long to grow.

September 10, 2009 at 8:51 amI love how you just enjoy everything in your life – from the fabulous food you make to getting your hair highlighted! Have a great appointment!

September 10, 2009 at 8:58 amI’m scared to get my hair dyed/highlighted – I had a baaaad experience (think orange hair…) in early high school and have since been afraid of trying again. Also, being as low maintenance as I am, I’m worried about having to keep it up and touch up the roots, get re-highlighted, etc. Is it really worth it?! I’ve been contemplating taking the plunge for a while now.

September 10, 2009 at 9:07 amI know how you feel in regards to the morning workouts. The night before I’m always so motivated and know that I’ll have no problem hopping out of bed…but when that alarm goes off, it’s another story. This week I’ve been pretty good with morning workouts, but I try not to get down on myself when I want to sleep in from time to time, as long as I know I have time for a workout later in the day.

September 10, 2009 at 9:08 amGetting my hair done is one of my simple pleasures as well. I could leave shopping behind as long as I can get my hair done 😀

September 10, 2009 at 9:11 amLove highlighting my hair as well, especially in the summer where you can tell in the sun, with red hair it really stands out!
Have a great day and run!

September 10, 2009 at 9:46 amI just tried Udi’s and I LOVE IT!
I’m like you. I don’t really spend too much money on ‘girlie’ things. Every once in awhile I will go on a shopping spree, but I don’t spend my money on clothes, jewelry, make-up, etc., most of the time. I would much rather spend it on good food, wine, traveling and yes, my hair! 🙂
Have fun!

September 10, 2009 at 9:53 amSometimes you just gotta hit the snooze button! There’s always time for another run later.

September 10, 2009 at 9:59 amGetting my hair done is one of my pleasures as well! It just makes me feel great! Don’t feel bad about not getting your run in this morning you are not the only one who hit the snooze button! I will be getting my workout in later as well.
Enjoy your walk with your puppy! 🙂

September 10, 2009 at 10:00 am100% agreed – good highlights are worth every penny!! I go to an Aveda salon and my Dad thinks I’m nuts for paying that much for hair – “why don’t you just keep it you own natural color?”… Dad’s – they’ll never understand! Aveda products are AWESOME – no chemicals so your hair never has that overprocessed feeling 🙂

i’ve never made steel cut oats for the exact reason that it takes too long, but i love your idea of premaking them in advance-thanks jenna!

September 10, 2009 at 10:38 amWhat a great idea to make the oats ahead of time and then just reheat! I will definitely be trying that in the near future.

September 10, 2009 at 10:42 amYep, definitely slacked off today and slept through my alarm too. I’ve had a couple of awesome night runs lately though, so I’m not even bummed 🙂 Have a fun Friday

September 10, 2009 at 10:46 amGetting up in the morning to run is one of the hardest things for me. And I consider myself a morning person! Almost always, it gets put off until later. As long as you get it done sometime!

September 10, 2009 at 10:47 amSometimes you just need the sleep! I also LOVE getting my hair higlighted! Nothing wrong with that.

September 10, 2009 at 10:59 amMy girly pleasure is my pedicures. I don’t wear a lot of fancy clothes because I’m always in uniform or workout clothes. I wear my hair up most days because I’m growing it out. I can’t wear jewelry (except wedding set) or nail polish due to regulations. So I get my toes done. They look super cute with flip flops or at yoga and are hidden in my work shoes. 🙂

September 10, 2009 at 11:01 amMmmmm….it’s worth getting your hair done just for having someone else blowdry!
Love the idea of packing up the oatmeal for the week in baggies, do you let it cool before you put it in the baggies?
What a great time saver for the week! I make many of my meals in advance, but rarely think to make my breakfast in advance except for hard boiled eggs.

September 10, 2009 at 11:48 amwell you will be a hot babe running with your highlights tonight!! woo hoo! 🙂

September 10, 2009 at 11:55 amI try to think of getting my hair done as in investment in yourself – your appearance, how you feel about yourself .. not necessarily how other people see you (if you want to rock purple hair b/c it makes you feel awesome then do it!). I am very conscious about spending $$ so I only get them done 2-3 times a year. Enjoy it – especially if you’re going somewhere where you trust the hairdresser and feel comfortable.

September 10, 2009 at 11:56 amhm i have never tried steel cut!
i love getting my hair done, but i do it rarely now. it is soooo expensive.

September 10, 2009 at 12:19 pmFirst comment ever to let you know of an awesome way to cook Steel Cut Oats (a modification of an Alton Brown recipe):
1 cup Steel Cut Oats
4 cups liquid of choice (I usually use 1/2 water, 1/2 skim milk)
1 tsp vanilla
2-3 whole cinnamon sticks
Spray Crock Pot with non stick spray. Put all ingredients in crock pot and cook on low for 3 hours. Remove cinnamon sticks and divide into single-serving containers or bags. Heat in the morning and enjoy. I usually add frozen blueberries before I heat it up, so delicious!
** To change it up during apple season, I often dice a couple of apples and throw them in the crockpot too.

September 10, 2009 at 12:58 pmI hear ya with steel cut oats. I like em better than rolled oats too. Did you know they’re also called pinhead oats?

September 10, 2009 at 3:50 pmI’m with you! I’ll take good food and getting my hair cut over girly type shopping any day! I always eat old fashioned oats…I’ll have to try steel cut.

September 10, 2009 at 4:15 pmI agree, steel cut oats are so good! They have a crunchy texture and a nutty flavor. Worth the wait in cook time.

September 10, 2009 at 4:47 pmI just got a slow cooker that I’ve read is good to make steel-cup oats in overnight so you wake up to them in the morning 🙂 I’m the same, I don’t spend ANY money on clothing or shoes. But I have no issue with throwing down money for some quality food 🙂

September 10, 2009 at 4:48 pmYour pre-cook oats sounds like a great idea!! I have an early work day tomorrow so I think I’ll give it a shot. Quick breakfast is always a help!

September 10, 2009 at 5:28 pmI don’t get my hair highlighted anymore (too much upkeep and $$) but I love the feeling of knowing you have a haircut, highlighting, eyebrow wax, or all of the above coming up – it’s just such a good feeling!! I always look forward to my haircuts for weeks ahead of time… silly, but true 🙂
Liz
September 10, 2009 at 7:31 pmLove the idea to make the oats a head of time. I’ve actually never tried steel cut…for the very fact they take longer. But, now you gave me the idea to make a big batch. Thanks!

September 11, 2009 at 12:12 amGreat tip on pre-making the oats – can’t believe I never thought of that, will definitely be doing that now. And yes, highlights, one of life’s true necessities!

December 12, 2011 at 5:08 amI know this is an old post but I just found it and I have a quick question…what is the best way to reheat the oats? microwave or stove top? thanks
