Tea For A Warrior

Mornin’!

I did not sleep well last night. Well, I take that back. I slept okay once I fell asleep but it took me about two and a half hours to get to that point! I’ve always been a weird sleeper and wish I was one of those people that can just fall right asleep as their head hits the pillow…but no. Oh well. I slept in till 7:30 so I’ll be fine.

Today’s oats featured chia seeds!

IMG_4011.JPG
I used to play a lot with these little nutrient dense seeds but don’t think I’ve ever put them in my oatmeal! So today I used 1/3 c oats, 1/2 c soymilk, 1/4 c water, 1 T chia seeds, 1 banana and 1 T almond butter:

IMG_4018.JPG
I liked the end result…the chia seeds sort of “fluffed up” the oatmeal and gave it a nice little crunchie crunch.
I also had some new tea that the lovely Cynthia sent me! Thank you, Cynthia, I LOVED it! I miss Teavana SO MUCH.

IMG_4017.JPG
I have this neat little teapot that I got at a spa out in Arizona when I was 18. I rarely use it but really should more often because it rocks and makes the perfect cup of tea!
IMG_4014.JPG
IMG_4016.JPG
It has a little basket where you put the loose tea and then you just add the water, set a timer (or not) and let it brew! If you fill up the whole teapot it equals one mug of tea…perfect for one person! I really need to expand my loose tea collection. I have about a million tea bags (Anne thought I was running a tea salon out of my kitchen) but no loose tea…and I LOVE loose tea. Especially from Teavana.

I have an important (and exciting!) phone call at 9:00 then I think I’m going to hang out on my mat with Dave for awhile. Random question: is anyone going to the Yoga Journal Conference in San Francisco at the end of the month?! I’m dying to go and practice with Shiva Rea and Seane Corne. It would be aaamazing!

OMG. I would totally love to go to that but alas, my yoga budget is too small right now 🙁 I went to Dallas and practiced with Baron Baptiste in November and it was nothing short of amazing. I really want to practice with Sean Corne, too. The lady that owns the studio I go to has and she said it was phenomenal.

I love Teavana! We spend toooo much money when we shop there, so we limit our trips to once every other month =P
I was really sad that they did away with my favorite though, Mrs. Earl Grey =( One of our recent favs is the Sour Cherry Serenade, its a black tea but is really fruity, and kind of tart. Mixed with an earl grey is a great combination! I have some of that chai, its delicious!
I tried your almond butter in oatmeal idea last weekend, and it was really good! I never would’ve thought to try that on my own.

My lululemon store has free yoga classes sunday mornings and I had my mat next to the rack of hoodies and kept checking them out during the class. I haven’t gone to a YJ conference before but I’ve practiced with some of the teachers presenting (including Shiva — she is as amazing as she seems!!) and I like to take any chance I get to see them again. But, it is pretty expensive. That is the only thing holding me back from pulling the trigger right now and signing up.

I think I only like chia seeds in oatmeal or in baked goods. They make smoothies too crunchy and sour(? that’s not the right description, but just off in some way).

I was just thinking I needed to get looseleaf tea since I saw that it is usually cheaper and I read better quality tea since they can’t hide it in the bags. BUT first I need a. a teapot and b. to use up some of the 20 something boxes of Celestial tea bags I have, I swear I had three and they just multiplied….

You could try some “Natural Calm” for the sleeplessness. It’s a pure magnesium citrate powder supplement, that you spoon into hot water like a tea. Sometimes sleeplessness is a biochemical thing, and the Natural Calm adds more magnesium for the right calcium-magnesium balance. We often get enough calcium in our diet, but not enough magnesium. I know you know all these things, but I’ve found that the Natural Calm works for me as a gentle sleep aid. It comes “plain” (kind of a citrusy taste), or in a few other flavors like raspberry.

A lot of nights I have a tough time falling asleep. I’m usually really tired, but my mind is always racing!

If it’s because you have stuff going through your head, it might help to write a little bit in a journal before you go to bed, whatever that stuff may be. I actually do that in the morning (should take my own advice and try it at night), and find that once I get my worries or humdrum thoughts or whatever onto paper, I don’t give them a second though afterwards. Clears the head!

    Hi Jenna-
I was just at whole foods this past weekend and actually ended up buying some white chia seeds; but I didn’t know exactly what to use them in. Now I know at least one use! As for loose tea, there is actually a great little tea place in Chinatown in San Franciso. The owner is awesome and the tea is even better. Their website is: http://www.vitaltleaf.com/

    Hi there,
Love the blog! Very very random, but have you ever tried one of those memory foams? I saved up for one since they are about $100 at target, but ever since I have passed out right when the head hits the pillow 🙂

Haha, I love the tea stuff. I actually just got back to the States from a half year over in Beijing, China so if you ever need a tea suggestion, you just ask!

I am curious as to how you keep such good track of your food? Do you normally have a food diary of some sort and a camera around when you go to eat? I’m only asking because I really need to get much better about this and yours seemed very thourough!

I’ve actually been on a nutrition plan designed by a doctor who won the Nobel Prize in nutrition and biochemistry, so I’m trying to piece together the skills to have a blog like yours to track the progress. I’m working with his weight maintenance/gain program since I’m a marathon runner and looking to either stay the same or add a little muscle mass, but anyways not important to what I am asking!

I’m curious, since you are so conscious of what you eat, if you have looked into anything regarding multi-vitamins vs. eating organic vs. cellular nutrition vitamins? I ask because I used to be on the multi-vitamins and eating organic camp but discovered the multi-vitamins aren’t ideal for your body for many reasons, and eating organic still doesn’t get you all the nutrients you need, so I’ve since been looking into cellular nutrition stuff and found some great stuff.

Anyways I’d love to hear your take on all this! If you, or anyone for that matter, would like to offer a word of wisdom on nutrition or even just for my blog please by all means shoot me an email anytime at alexidouvas@gmail.com!

Looking forward to talking more with ya!

I’m am such an inconsistent sleeper too–I’ll get really good sleep for a few weeks, and then out of the blue it will take me forever to fall asleep/stay asleep. I’ve found out it’s related to my horomones, so at least I know when to expect sleep disruptions (to some extent).
