The Rattling In My Head

by jenna on February 17, 2010

Morning!

Sorry I wasn’t around last night. It was all I could do to lay in my dark room listening to Pride and Prejudice with my eyes squeezed shut (one of my favorite movies EVER–I’m a huuuge Jane Austen fan). Anyways, this morning I STILL have a headache but I’m feeling alright…must.forge.onward!

To start, I had a big blue smoothie for a snack:

IMG_4603

Using 1 cup soymilk, 1/2 scoop vanilla protein powder, 1 scoop chocolate superfood, 1 tsp maca, 1/2 tsp xantham gum, handful of frozen blueberries and a few ice cubes.

And then for dinner I had a piece of salmon that I seared in a little coconut oil, Trader Joe’s couscous blend (mixed with 2 tbsp goat cheese) and roasted brussels sprouts:

IMG_4604
However, after dinner my head REALLY started to pound and I decided to go with my approach that “frozen yogurt heals everything”

IMG_4605
Mint yogurt with butterfinger and oreo. This + P&P made me sleep like a baby :)
This morning I dug into some overnight oats:

IMG_4606
And now I’m just laying in bed watching the sun rise. I have big plans this morning that involves me driving over to “the other valley” ;) You’ll have to wait and see!
And now a question to my NorCal readers, anyone excited for Sonoma County Restaurant Week??! Basically all next week you can enjoy meals at some awesome local restaurants for a fixed price—either $19, $29 or $39. This is a BIG deal, seeing as some of those restaurants are super fancy (ahem, dry creek kitchen!). I may or may not have a few surprises up my sleeve!

Some advice from a fellow headache sufferer:
1. Chug as much water as you can. Like 3 times more than you normally do
2. Eat peppermints
3. Drink a coke. Not diet. A regular coke. Gasp!
4. Get some eucalyptus, lavender, or peppermint oil- use it in a hot bath or rub it on your temples
5. Heat on the eyes- I have an eye pillow

Hope these help!

Jenna,
Are the headaches migraines? Do you get them frequently? My wife used to get migraines that were completely debilitating, probably 2-3 times per week. After working with my Dad, she hasn’t had any in years!!!!!!

You might want to check out my Dad’s website:
http://www.thehealingwordspress.com/migraines.php
He is a therapist, and has recorded CDs to help people get over migraines, quit smoking, lower stress, etc.

I know some people don’t have much faith in hypnotherapy, but I promise you, it works! If you want to know more, send me an email…

Remember that if you’re going to take a pain killer for your headaches, it’s best to do it BEFORE it gets really bad. That’s just the way pain killers work unfortunately. They have to get in and disrupt your pain receptors before they really get going.

Also, I know headaches are different for everyone, but my experience (and recommendation from my neurologist) was to get off b.c. pills. Especially with the generic ones, the hormones can come from horses and stuff and they really affected me badly. Maybe that will be a helpful tip for someone, if not for you (I have no idea if ur on b.c. pills or not, but I know most women are).

So sorry about your headache! Hope it is completely gone soon! Glad you went for the Fro-yo! I would also try some caffeine! I usually get lines in my peripheral vision before I get a migraine, and taking ibuprofen or tylenol right away usually stops it before it really starts. If it starts overnight while I am sleeping, I wake up nauseous. Take care of yourself!

Can’t wait to see your great finds from restaurant week! I so wish I was there to enjoy it too! Have Fun!

Jenna, I’m sorry you’re feeling icky. That’s not any fun at all.

I have broken down and bought my first can of Amazing Grass Superfood (chocolate) and I’d like your advice on how to try it for the first time. I’m not a fan of greens (I know, I know!) so I’m hoping this will help me get more of them in me. Unfortunately most of the recommendations I see are to use this stuff with bananas for smoothies…I’m allergic to bananas, kiwi, papaya, mango…all the good smoothie stuff. Can I just mix it with skim milk? Any other suggestions to ease me into this stuff?

Feel better!

Glad your headache is much better… I was thinking when you mentioned having really vivid, bad dreams, then waking up with a headache that it could be a migraine- I know nightmares are linked to high seretonin levels, and the subsequent drop in seretonin is thought to be a primary culprit in migraines… I sound like a nerd, but I should know, having hemiplegic (stroke-like) migraines with permanent visual auras and tried everything under the sun ;( I think B vitamins are supposed to help some people? If you love Jane Austen, have you ever seen the BBC versions of Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Persuasion, Northanger Abbey? They’re really, really good- and true to the plots too. I bet you could find them cheaply online or on Amazon too… you should come and visit Bath if you ever stay in England!

You’ve probably investigated a variety of causes since I know you’ve mentioned your migraines have plagued you for years, but I just wanted to share my experience since there’s a tiny chance it could help you. For about two years I suffered from totally debilitating migraines until I learned one day that headaches are a symptom of dairy intolerance. I cut dairy, my headaches disappeared, and I’m living pain-free again. Just wanted to mention the possibility and sympathize with the migraine misery…
