The Winning Mantra

by jenna on March 20, 2010

Helloooo!

I have resurfaced. This weekend is non-stop! I’m not sure where I left off yesterday but last night was nothing too exciting. I ate a veggie burger and a pear, turned off my phone and hit the sack super early because my alarm was set for 5:30 this morning for my race!

IMG_5104
I might have had a fashion show or two for Dexter, as well, trying to pick out a dress for tonight’s Pigs & Pinot Gala Dinner. ;)

IMG_5105
The verdict is still out.
This morning I ate a slice of peanut butter toast with half a banana and then high-tailed it to Napa to meet my friend Michaela for the Carneros Vineyard Run! It was FREEZING!!!!!!!

1000 is a lucky number, right??! The run actually went REALLY well. Like, much better than anticipated. The course was more challenging and hillier than anything I’ve ever ran before but I felt really strong and good. The only problem was the MASSIVE hill right before the finish line. I’m used to running where its nice and flat and this was a rude awakening. I stopped and walked for like 15 seconds and then saw lots of highly attractive firefighters standing around and repeated the “bloody mary and donut!” mantra in my head until I was at the top. At the top of the hill though you could see the mountains and the ocean….it was so gorgeous!

I finished in 28:10, which I was really happy about. My PR is 25:30 but that’s on a nice flat street in sunny, warm Florida. I’ll take 28:10 here. ;)

I think Napa might be the only place on earth where right after a race, there’s a wine tasting. Totally normal.

IMG_0201
I grabbed half a banana, an orange slice and some coffee while I waited for Michaela, who was running the 10K. There was a pancake breakfast going on but we had already made other plans…..

IMG_0199
Bloody mary’s!!!

IMG_5114

IMG_5116
Oh, and warm donuts dipped in chocolate sauce!!!!!! (I ate a ridiculous amount of amazing food)

IMG_5117
IMG_5119
IMG_0207
I ordered the eggs in a hole with a side of chicken apple sausage. It was deeeeeelicious!

IMG_5120
I was SO FULL. As in, brunch occurred around 11:15 and it’s 3:30 and I still haven’t had anything else to eat. I think I’m going to make a light snack though….I want to save room for dinner tonight!

Screen shot 2010-03-20 at 3.20.48 PM.png

Uhhhh yeah, there will a lot of delicious food and wine consumed tonight. Its going to be pretty out of control. I guess I should probably take a shower or something. ;)

Live Your Life is my current running song OBSESSION! I have figured that if I can run to the beat I pace at about 8:30 min/mile which is my perfect “tempo” speed. If CA is the only place with wine after races, then central IL is the only place with an unlimited beer tent afterwards. Beer + a muffin tastes AMAZING at 8 am after a hot steamy humid July race, btw. I can only imagine the amazingness of wine (and a bloody mary ;) )

What a fun race in Napa…with wine! Many runs in Detroit have beer or coney island’s at the finish line! I love bloody mary’s – the new thing now is Bloody Mary bars, I went to one in Chicago. Hope you are having a great dinner!

Heya,
actually, in Nether-Franconia in Germany is a run called Schwanberglauf, which leads over 12 km from one village (Iphofen) to the second village (Castell). The run represents the beginning of the wine festival in Castell, which will go on for one week. You should check it out, when you are in Europe this summer – the run and adjourning festival takes place around the 12th of July. And the area is one of the best white wine areas in Germany…
