Valley Girl

Napa sure was nice, but I was glad to get back to my little home “out in the country” over here in Sonoma. 😉

For lunch though, I was so excited to go to the original Oakville Grocery!!!!

I love the little one that is a few blocks from me, but this was so much better…and cuter! I got a hummus and veggie sandwich on whole wheat and it was delicious.

We didn’t end up making it to Cakebread…instead just explored the quaint little town of St.Helena!

And then I squeamed in delight when we stopped at Greystone!

SO GORGEOUS!!! I love my alma mater, but this was truly majestic. I also met Chloe, a reader, in the campus store! :)

We made a pit stop at both Target and Trader Joe’s (have I mentioned how much I love having my mom here?!) and then it was finally home. Snack was an apple with almond butter—

And dinner was roast chicken! Not to toot my own horn or anything, but I make some darn good roast chicken. I stuff the inside of the chicken with garlic and lemon and rub butter, olive oil and sea salt all over. It made my little house smell AAAAMAZING (and also set off the fire alarm a few times..oopsies) and I served it with baked sweet potatoes and roasted carrots:

(I dipped my chicken in this delicious apple mustard with ginger and cinnamon!)

Matanzas Creek Merlot was poured—

And dessert was a yogurt with chocolate chips, dried cherries and raspberry jam:

Last night of mom-time. We are doing laundry, hanging pictures and playing with Dexter.

See you tomorrow!

Glad you’re enjoying your time with your Mom.
I miss mine! I can’t wait to go home not only because I miss my Mom but I miss California in general!

Bridget November 18, 2009 at 8:03 pm

I love old buildings with ads painted on the outside walls. LOVE!
Your roast chicken sounds amazing, but I am scared to stuff things inside a bird…hopefully it’s not as gross as it sounds :)

Carolyn November 18, 2009 at 8:06 pm

Glad you’re enjoying your time with your mom and that you have Dexter for company now.

Joelle (The Pancake Girl)) November 18, 2009 at 8:35 pm

As a history nerd, I’m way excited that your grocery bag says it was established in 1884!

Jolene ( November 18, 2009 at 8:48 pm

Your roasted chicken sounds wonderful – the lemon would make it so tender and delicious! I love that you drink wine like everyday :-) It makes me happy.

Chelsea (Chelsea's Chew and Run Fun) November 19, 2009 at 3:54 am

Hope you enjoy the last night of your mom’s visit. Sounds like you both had a lovely time throughout the duration of her trip!

Also, your roast chicken method sounds so delicious and simple. I hear ya on the sensitive smoke alarms. Mine is constantly going off, it completely disrupts the food groove when you have to stop to poke a smoke alarm with a broom.

Light Delight with TouTou November 19, 2009 at 4:26 am

I like that sandwich – love everything with hummus !
and of cause your big smiling face !

eatmovelove November 19, 2009 at 4:28 am

I can just smell that chicken now…mmmm…I should do that soon – I always just do the quick grilling method.Enjoy your last day with your Mom – do you guys have similar personalities? You seem to get along really well. And are you an only child?

Stephanie November 19, 2009 at 4:46 am

Isn’t that mustard incredible?! I just picked some up the other day and have been slathering on anything I can lately… yum :)

Amanda (modernation) November 19, 2009 at 8:19 am

I love St. Helena. Did you make it to Woodhouse Chocolates or Dean and Deluca?

Jenna November 19, 2009 at 8:21 am

Having family around is the best feeling. Whenever my mom and brother come to visit, it is like I am so much more at ease.

Looks like you’ve had a great mother/daughter time!

MelissaNibbles November 19, 2009 at 8:55 am

The Greystone Restaurant is delish!

Barbara(Blood, Sweat and Heels) November 19, 2009 at 9:08 am

I went to St Helena in Feb…loved it. I swear the BEST sandwich of my life was had at Taylor’s Refresher. OMG…Ahi tuna sammy.

Put it on the list!

Glad you got time to spend with your mother….

Amanda @ Cakes and Ale November 19, 2009 at 10:31 am

Ha – I set off the fire alarm in our place ALL THE TIME while cooking. It’s so sensitive!

Lindsay November 19, 2009 at 12:43 pm

Love Oakville Grocery. Hope you started one of their frequent buyer sandwich club cards! Your 8th sandwich is free and bunny stamps = so cute!

Hillary @ Nutrition Nut on the Run November 19, 2009 at 11:42 pm

Your a.m. juice/smoothie looks scrumptious. Do you use a regular blender?
