Yoga (and red wine) Cures All

Hi guys!

Thank you so much for your many kind words and sympathies regarding my insomnia. Sometimes you really feel like you are the ONLY one in the world that can’t fall asleep at night so it helps immensely just to know that there are other girls out there that fight the same problem.

Needless to say, this afternoon draggggeeeeeeddddd on. I’m SO ready for Saturday at 12:30 because Sunday is my long awaited day off! Today I went to the library and put my name on the waiting list for the new Wally Lamb book (which looks AMAZING!) and checked out two other books, one of which is just an old school Danielle Steel. I think I need some light and easy reading in my life to lull the sleep fairies. 😉

Later, even though my eyes were burning from exhaustion, I gave it all to my mat and did a 60 minute Baptiste Power Vinyasa class from yogadownloads. Even though it was just a beginners class, I found it rather challenging….probably because I’m so tired! I like to do beginner classes every now and then though because I find they really focus on the postures, rather than rushing through a vinyasa. You learn to really breathe in warrior one and two. Breeeeeeathe. Ahhhhh. I felt so much better after I did the class so I took Mikan out on a 15 minute walk in the cold. And yes, it is quite chilly here! haha 🙂

After my walk I found no better time ever than to have a healthy glass of red wine.

And for dinner, I heated up some roasted fingerling potatoes my mom made earlier (roast with olive olive, sea salt, pepper and cayenne at 400 for 20-ish minutes?) as well as a sunshine burger. I also had a yummy babybell cheese on the side and a large arugula salad with woodstock dressing.

I’m now sipping on chamomile tea and about ready to hit the bath. I downloaded a 16 minute relaxing savasana meditation from yogadownloads and I’m going to try that on my ipod right when I get into bed tonight. I’ll let you know in the morning on whether it worked or not!

See you tomorrow!

I thought you would enjoy this:

Due to a snow day yesterday, I had to take to some workout videos to get my sweat on. I did a 50 minute kickboxing video and then a 50 minute yoga video. I swear to you that the reason I am sore today has nothing to do with kickboxing. Love it!

sleep well tonight! whenever I have trouble sleeping I try to concentrate on my breathing and then think of a relaxing place (on a hammock by the beach, waves are my breath!). It really helps!

I just finished reading “Bread Alone” after I saw you had mentioned back in Dec that it is was one of your favorite books. I absolutley loved it! And now my girlfriend is reading it and is also in love with it too. Of course I had to read the “Baker’s Apprentice” so I could see what appened to Wyn and all of the characters at the Bakery. It also then makes me smile when you describe your work hours because I imagine you like Wyn.
Also read “Skeletons of the Feast” Not as fun but really liked it too.
Thank you for mentioning what you are reading because it gives us good ideas.

And every now and then, you need an easy read to put you to bed =)

    Enjoy your night!

I had insomnia about two months ago, and there were two straight weeks that I couldn’t sleep. At Thanksgiving, I was so worn out and exhausted that my family thought that something was wrong with me. I guess I was acting weird due to lack of sleep. I told them about the insomnia, but they didn’t really believe that was the problem. Unless it’s happened to you, I guess it’s hard for others to process. Anyway, I had been adding more to my fitness regime and not adding more calories. My husband told me that I couldn’t sleep because I was hungry, and he was right. I added about 300 more calories for the day, and now I’m sleeping fine. Weird!

I have trouble sleeping too. I’m taking a class right now called “sleep and dreams”– it’s all about sleep disorders and sleep cycles. There’s so much we as Americans just don’t know about sleep and it’s so helpful to learn!

You probably have a huge Sleep Debt– which literally just means you’ve missed so many hours of sleep. You have to pay it back–that’s the only way. Even if you get, say, 7 hours a night for a week– you miss one hour a night and that adds up to a 7 hour deficit by the end of the week! Take some naps whenever you can and drink more red wine– that ALWAYS puts me to sleep almost INSTANTLY!

Love your blog so much. Reading religiously, though I don’t always comment.

    🙂 Elise

That dinner looks like bites of everything 🙂 Love it!

Re: insomnia, you are definitely not alone! I go through the weirdest sleeping patterns and right now it my “barely-sleep-at-all” stage. I still make myself wake up at the same time and I don’t take naps (I just can’t – my brain doesn’t turn off) so hopefully I’ll adjust back to normal sleeping in no time. Unlike you, I don’t have to go to bake all morning – good luck!!

I just finished that Wally Lamb book a couple weeks ago! There were some draggy parts that required skimming, but it was so worth it. The style was very similar to his others with tons of detail and background about everything — he really pulls you in!

    Hi Jenna!
I don’t know if you ever got a comment I made on an earlier entry. It was just said that I’ve been a fan of the blog for a long time and I enjoy reading it because I feel like I have a lot in common with you. I also asked for advice on starting my own blog as a busy college student 🙂
Anyway, just wanted to give you a heads up that my mom actually called me at school today to tell me to throw away any Clif and Luna bars because there’s a national recall of peanut butter products due to suspicion that they could contain salmonella. CostCo called her today to inform her since we had recently bought Clif bars there.
Thanks for all the work you do on the blog! You’re definitely a great role model!

Jessie’s comment spurred me to finally do a search on “peanut butter recalls.” Jenna you must look at the list because many bars you mention are on it! I’m not sure of specifics, but check it out.

I LOVE Wally Lamb. I read the new one a while ago, and it was true to his style. He was under a lot of pressure for it though, according to his interviews. He’s such a good author. I happen to be a twin, and I was amazed at how well he was able to explain the psych of twins in “This Much I Know is True”. So good.

Another thing you might want to try that helps me is get a little box fan to make some “white noise.” I focus on the hum of the fan, rather than worrying about falling asleep, and it knocks me right out!

i’ve never tried sunshine burgers, but i’ve heard from all over the place that they’re awesome. your love of yoga is so inspiring! i had a yoga for stress management class last quarter as an elective and the teacher was pretty awful– never showed up to class, didn’t explain the poses very well, etc. maybe i’ll give it another shot!

I’m just starting to get into yoga, but red wine definitely cures all 🙂
Hope your sleeping improves! This is a tough schedule to get used too but your job is so cool, I’m sure if you stick it out your body will adjust.
