Lunch

A Bunch of Monkeys

I’m so glad that so many of you will be participating in Meatless in March with me! Yay! I just want to add that that is FINE if vegetarians and vegans want to join in as well….I will definitely include them in the end of the month cookie drawing (the cookies are vegan anyways). I’m looking forward to a fun and interesting month ahead.

Speaking of fun, today’s food blogger lunch was awesome! We went to Datz Deli, which is a traditional Jewish deli with an awesome menu and ambiance. Immediately once we sat down, we were brought out a complimentary monkey bread!

Oh.my.gosh. I didn’t even have words for this….it was probably one of the top five best things I have EVER eaten in my entire life. Hot, soft and doughy…with tons of cinnamon sugar. All 10 of our jaws just DROPPED when she set this down at table. Here was my piece:

I also had another unpictured bite. It was sooooooo good.

And for my brunch entree, I chose “Jack’s Shrooms”, an egg white omelet with pepperjack cheese, onions, fresh basil and mushrooms. On the side I got fruit instead of hash browns and a piece of yummy thick toast with cran-apple butter.

And then our server brought out glasses of sparkling wine for each of us! Talk about VIP service! I guess she could tell something was up with all the camera lights flashing at the table 😉

I only had about half of mine though because I ordered my favorite blackberry italian soda 🙂

Here I am with my Caitlin and Meghann, my running rockstar girls….I am SO beyond proud of them!!!! I actually almost teared up reading their race day recaps!

img_5236

Speaking of running, I am still totally on my runner’s high from yesterday’s race (which seems like a baby race compared to what those girls did!). I decided that I am DETERMINED to be able to run pain-free. I have been going back and forth with this dilemma for two long years now and I’ve had enough. Running pain-free is one of the best feelings and after yesterday I am totally motivated to beat this and get back there. I’ve never been a quitter and don’t want to start now. So, I sort of went a little out of control at Fit 2 Run this morning…….I got new shoes AND “compression socks”, which apparently squeeze in your leg muscles and prevent/reduce shin splints. Check it out!

The shoes are pearl izumi synchro infinities, and I got them because I have a marathon runner friend who told me she, too, was plagued by horrible re-occuring shin splints that flared up whenever she ran and these were like an instant godsend. I like my Brooks but they never helped with my pain at all, which makes me think that they weren’t the right shoe for me. Hopefully these will work!

I am off to the Y then home to get ready for work tomorrow! The weekend flew by way too quickly 🙁

    Hi Jenna,

I’ve been reading your blog for quite a while, but never posted. (So, first, hi!) I’m Jewish, raised Jewish, so I know “deli-Jewish” but I’ve never heard of this delicious-looking monkey bread that has me completely intrigued! Does anyone else know of this or seen it before? I live in NYC so I won’t be going to that deli anytime soon…unfortunately…

My boyfriend’s mom makes that bread every year for Christmas. She takes frozen bread/roll dough, lets it defrost over night, then bakes it in a bundt pan with a lot of butter, cinammon, and sugar. Healthy, it’s NOT, but incredibly delicious…yes! She also puts walnuts in between the bread layers sometimes.

Good luck on meatless March! I know I couldn’t do it but I love cooking vegetarian meals so I’m looking forward to reading the recipe ideas.

I think Datz is a riff on Katz’s Delicatessen in New York, but maybe not! Looks like you girls had a fun time.

I’m a vegetarian (or pescatarian, really) but I’d love to participate in your challenge as well!

I’m glad I got a chance to meet you today Jenna! I loved Datz Deli and I can’t wait to do another Tampa meet-up again. Hopefully I’ll be moving closer to the area after graduation (fingers crossed!).

Good luck with the new shoes and compression socks! I had shin splints for 6 months when I started rowing in high school and they are THE worst. I hope they go away for you!
