Okay. I know I don’t normally post cocktails on this blog but this one really needs it’s own special section and recognition. Seriously. Two days ago (I’m losing all track of time), Morgan and I made blue cheese burgers, a yummy Cape Cod salad with apples, cranberries and feta, and……blackberry margaritas.
The burgers were fabulous but the real star of the evening were the blackberry margaritas.
In my former life, I’d been banned from Tequila. However, all bets are off in Texas and I’ve rekindled my love for the wondrous juice that hails from that spiky little plant in the desert. Wine in Sonoma? What’s that? Where’s that? I don’t even know who I am anymore.
Okay fine. So I’ve been drinking margaritas here because I decided I needed to better be on Almanzo’s level. You know, with all the pain pills and stuff. Don’t judge me!! Desperate times call for desperate measures.
Just please make these margaritas for your next party….or happy hour. Morgan and I were shocked at how utterly delicious they turned out and each drank two. But that’s off the record…like I said, all bets are off.
Blackberry Margaritas
Serves 2
1 shot triple sec
3 shots tequila
1/2 shot black current liquor
1/2 cup blackberries
1 6-ounce can limeade
1 cup crushed ice
Combine the all ingredients in a large pitcher. Using a big wooden spoon, muddle the blackberries so they are pretty much all crushed up in the drink. Serve with additional blackberries and a lime wedge.
Do you have a tequila horror story? Let’s hear it.

My horror stories revolve around gin mostly. I think I have the right chemical composition for tequila.
Me and tequila, we are good friends
No tequila horror stories…never have been a big margarita fan, to tell the truth, But I might have to try this version. Also you realize we need the recipes for the rest of this meal too, right?
I’m not a huge alcohol fan, but even I will admit that these look awesome!
They sound like something I need to ship up for my parents when they come to visit me
Mmmm those look delicious. I once had a blackberry mojito at a restaurant in Northampton MA that was great. Blackberries are great for fruity drinks that aren’t toooo sweet.
Margs are my favorite drink and I don’t have a horror story behind tequila – I hope I never do because I will probably not want to drink them then!
You really, really don’t want to hear the gory, nasty details of my tequila horror story. I promise. Just know that I haven’t touched the stuff in a good 3 years.
Let’s put it this way…I can’t think of a tequila story that isn’t a horror story
Alright, now I have to make those too. Maybe I’ll make the Migas for lunch instead of breakfast and serve the margaritas with it!
Tequila horror story…hmmm…I think the best (or worst depending on how you look at it) involved a night in college where I was dressed in velvet from head to toe (I think it was around the holidays, please don’t judge my fashion sense, I was young) and ended up passed out on the floor of my sorority house bathroom. Which my friend was kind enough to take pictures of, nice.
I heart margaritas! They’re my favorite beverage
We don’t talk about that night, okay?
P.S. These looks super delicious, super boozy, and super easy! Score.
Oh yes, I have a horror story. I used to love tequila sunrises and one night I was making them way too strong at a party at my downstairs neighbor’s apt. Long story short, I had to be carried up stairs to our apartment where I ended up throwing up on our carpet, knocking over a bookcase and crying out, “I want to die I want to die!” Needless to say, I haven’t had a tequila sunrise since
BUT I do still love tequila plain or in margs!!
Tequila and I have such a love/ hate relationship!!! I always come running back with open arms!!
I cant wait to try the blackberry recipe!
oh, i have a wonderful tequila horror story, but i think it is probably not appropriate for blog comments. let’s just say it involved several shots of patron, a california lawyer, a room at the hilton, and an unfortunately timed response to that amount of liquor. yeah.
ironically, tequila remains my absolute favorite liquor. try jalapeno tequila sometime if you can find it! my life has never been the same since that discovery.
Tequila is really the only liquor I can still tolerate. I quite enjoy it.
Whiskey on the other hand?! Eek.
I don’t have a tequila horror story- mine involve Taaka and Hawaiian Punch, Yaeger Bombs, and Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka. Never never never again for any of those!
The boyfriend, his mother, and I took a an all-inclusive trip to Mexico a couple of years ago. I don’t drink beer, and one evening my drink of choice was solely tequila shots. In between I was just drinking glasses of Sprite. My boyfriend however, was drinking beer AND taking a shot of tequila whenever I took one.
I was functional by the end of the night. My poor boyfriend however got tremendously ill and wound up with a horrible illness that knocked him out for the rest of the vacation.
His mom and I got in some good bonding, at least.
I loooooove tequila and margaritas! When we make them, we put honey on the rim with salt…it adds a little bit of sweetness…fresh mangos and mango juice is delicious in a margarita too!!! oooo and blood oranges…I just love margaritas in general.
Those look delicious! Tequila and I are usually good friends, but I did once drank a few too many margaritas at a happy hour celebrating the end of my freshman year of college. My parents came to move me out of my dorm that night and it was not a pretty sight. Let’s just say there were no elevators and my stair-climbing skills weren’t at their peak…
Yes. It begins in Mexico and ends with both me AND my husband having a severe case of the voms. I hope that paints a pretty picture for you.
Sweet! I think the black berry margarita sounds awesome, maybe only one for me though, hehe. I also have a Watermelon Margarita recipe that I use a lot. Hey- Trainers, can drink too ya know!
wink-wink.
As far as a teqilla story, I am actually a fun-happy drinker. Thank god.
Ugg. Joes Cuervo is like a mean boyfriend. It’s all warm and fuzzy in the beginning but when you let your guard down and get too close, you end up crying and swearing and wishing you’d never met him in the first place. If I had only known it was going to end so badly!
I haven’t touched the stuff since.
Let’s just say: pre-prom tequila, hot date, never made it out of limo. End of story.
It’s not a horror story but a comedy: I ended up on stage with a friend singing Britney Spears’ “(You Drive Me) Crazy” at a karaoke bar like I was a singing superstar. There may have a moment when I kissed said friend, too…
tequila is my best friend — no horror stories, and no crazy nights that i blame on the “t word” just lots and lots of love.
Ahh. Tequila horror stories. Yikes! The most memorable one was this past spring when West Virginia beat UK in the elite 8 during March Madness. As a diehard Louisville Cardinals fan, I HATE UK so after they lost, my friends and I had a big celebration. Needless to say, I ended up literally SLEEPING on the kitchen floor that night. Oops!
I yelled out across a crowded public place, “Hey! That kid was on Hannah Montana!” …and he totally wasn’t. For shame….
I have too many tequila horror stories from college to name…but, coincidentally enough, last night I was dragged to our local bar for $3 wine night (ok, maybe not dragged…) when suddenly my drinking companion decided to buy patron shots. Gahh. Needless to say, I’m not feelin’ too hot in the cubical today.
So….do you think a blackberry margarita would go well with the sushi I’m making my husband bring me after I have this baby? Because margs are my favorite adult beverage and I might dream about one of these until I give birth now.
first, how did you know i could use 12…err…2…of these right now? sounds amazing!
tequila horror story…in college, my first drinking experience and the only time i’ve ever been hungover, was a friend’s 21st birthday party. i drank 4 Smirnoff Raspberry twists because i thought they were basically soda. wrong. then, i was so tipsy off of that, that my roomie convinced me to take 4 shots of tequila AT ONCE out of a measuring cup. KLASSY.
let’s just say i was that girl in the alley vomiting all night. never again.
You mean, te-KILL-ya? I have a story involving yummy pitchers of Long Island Tea at a hotel bar called Tingles in Charleston. Most of the night was wicked fun, but it did not end well. My stomach still turns just thinking about it – 20 years later! I haven’t touched the stuff since that night.
Oh Tequila! Jose and I got into a fight and I lost. He left me on the side of the road to die. He’s a jerk and we no longer speak. I should upgrade to better tequila. The Blackberry Margaritas look delicious.
Cinco de Mayo. $1 tequila shots (read: CHEAP tequila). The tequila literally came back up as I was swallowing it.And then my throat burned for the rest of the night. No bueno.
I banned myself from tequila. Because it was not a good experience. Now I can only have it in small doses — but it has to be reposado o antiguo. Silver still makes me gag.
And on that note: never take shots of tequila. It never leads to good things. Although, I’m still considering whether or not I could pass off this blackberry margarita as “juice” in class today…
oh tequila…. the summer I lived in Guadalajara, Mexico we took a bus to Tequila, Mexico, about an hour away. there we toured the José Cuervo factory and let me just say: thank God we had a bus to take us home! before you leave Austin, go to Iron Cactus for a tequila flight (tequila tasting) if you really want to enjoy tequila again!
or Chuy’s for happy hour $3 mango margaritas and unlimited chips & queso! (that’s where the Bush twins were arrested for underage drinking… specifically the one on Barton Springs)
oh tequila. How I love thee<3 I've had many fun nights with tequilla and some nights I'll can't remember but my friends will never let me forget
best tequilla night: taking shots with my roommate, then going to the Penn State homecoming parade and proposing to a guy in Dunkin Donuts. I called it off 5 minutes later when he ran away from me and my roommate. It just wasn't meant to be.
Upside-down margaritas (lean your head back while someone pours in tequila and mixer) is a bad idea on its own. Doing one on an empty stomach before a toga party at your friend’s house is a TERRIBLE idea. Blacked out in 10 minutes, frolicked around the party (pictures tell me this), managed to break my friends’ toilet seat while bringing it all back up and woke up at 4am not remembering any of this on a random mattress in someone’s room.
I still enjoy real margaritas, though.
I recently decided, before moving day, that double tequilla and pineapple juice was a good idea to drink all night at my friend’s Bachelorette Party. The next morning I woke up, still kind of drunk, tossed my cookies, and “helped” my boyfriend move all of our stuff. I’m lucky I have such a nice boyfriend because he wasn’t annoyed with me being a bad helper at all!
I have a bicardi 151 horror story. It involves me, being passed out on a bathroom floor, and complete and total humiliation. We really don’t need to discuss it. :p lol
After going to Mexico and having too much tequila I no longer partake in any. But that drink does look good.
Delicious!!!! I’m so making those one day.
Yes! I spent my 21st birthday at a Mexican restaurant and they brought over a birthday shot of tequila. It was my very first shot ever and I took it straight down, and then it and my entire dinner came straight up and all over the table.
I replace any alcohol in drink recipes with vodka and I’m fine.
Yes, and it includes bodily functions that I don’t really want to talk about.
Oh, the horrible, horrible memories.
Not my story but my best friend had absd interaction with Jose our second year or college and ended up so sick she barfed her noise ring out into my trash can.
sounds like a delicious drink!
Please come to Charlottesville and try the SPICE-A-RITA made from jalapenos. It’s the best one I’ve ever had!
Have you ever been at the point where you take a shot of tequila, then said tequila shot comes right back up into a empty glass… and nobody even notices?!? I have, and I haven’t touched the stuff since!
What better to go with tequila (or any great drink really!) than burgers!?!
I had a tequila incident once in Chicago while on vacation. It was not pretty so I prefer not to relive it!
P.S. Your blog is great! Love the new style

Mmmm tequila…what started out as a fun round of shots quickly turned into body shots with friends and ended with my sister and I fighting over who got to eat the worm at the bottom of the bottle. Touche Jose, you win again!
Have you ever played bingo in one of those bingo parlors where people take it really seriously? And they have these paint dobber things that you use to mark your card? I woke up covered in paint dobs after a night of shots.
I can’t do tequila shots anymore, but I do love a margarita (2 is about my limit!). These sound delicious, I will have to try them!
spring break. rosarito, mexico. boom boom room’s $5 all you can drink tequila.
game over.
haven’t touched it since.
Me+tequila+Lady Gaga (or any music for that matter) = me finding and climbing the highest surface in the bar… and dancing
How summery and fresh! My friends threw a Labor Day Barbecue and made Blackberry Mojitos; they were so very good and full of alcohol.
How refreshing is this! I need to make one…stat!
Oh my stars I desperately want that in my life. I LOVE margaritas.
ARE YOU SERIOUS?!? Blackberry Margaritas? I’ve had my fair share of yummy margaritas–mango and pomegranate to name a few but that sound supurb! Love the current and lime. Tequila= my down fall. I don’t want to talk about it haha.
haha you crack me up. Glad you were able to revisit the forbidden drink. That looks amazing!
Horror Story: Mexico. 18 years old. Free tequila shots ALL NIGHT. First time drinkers. It was ugly. Have only had tequila once since that night. Almost 11 years ago.
Oh…my. That margarita looks absolutely amazing.
avocado margaritas and ruby red grapefruit margaritas=2 reasons i miss living in austin. oh, and a bad tequila story…drove down to puerto nuevo, mexico from san diego w/ my cousin about 8 yrs ago to eat cheap lobster and have a FEW bevvies. i drove down but i did not drive home…actually, don’t remember the drive home at ALL. my little cousin had to take care of me. it was nasty, nasty, nasty! can’t even remember how many tequila shots i did. that was back in my 20s! ha!
Oh Em Gee, that sounds fantastic! The last time I drank tequila I ended up doing shots with my daughter’s best friend’s brother and she found out about it on FB minutes later. Ick.
I’m pretty sure every time I go out with friends to the bars it is a tequila horror story! Or maybe a tequila love story.
Either way, these look amazing and I will be making them ASAP!
Holy hell that margarita recipe looks fabulous!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tequilla horror story? Oh honey back in the day I could drink up a $100 bar tab faster than you could say pass the Cuervo! I have done everything from drive to Mexico (I live in San Diego) after drinking tequilla to karoake to skinny dipping to kissing the porcelain goddess to calling people in my cell phone at 4am, there is just no tellin’ what I am capable of
I have mellowed though… I have a 3 yr old now
Mellowed, but not boring!
That sounds delicious!!! As for my stories, we won’t go there..
LOL – love Averies’ answer!
Tequila is where it’s at if you want a good time…until you take one shot too many that is
. Oof.
Your burger got me. I had a big juicy one myself. Yommers.
Glad you posted this the blueberry margaritas recipe it sounds fab
I love a good margarita! I also love tequila but it hasn’t always loved me. One time in high school after a night with a few tequila shots I threw up in the parking lot of our local ski hill upon arriving there with my parents. They were not too impressed to say the least!
I don’t have a tequila horror story, but I can absolutely not have greygoose vodka ever again in my life. Me and Greygoose got into a fight in Vegas – Greygoose won.
I am not a “big” drinker…I actually just had my first tequila shot last weekend. My friends were quite surprised that it was my first and had to teach me how to properly do the shot. Ha!
Oh gosh, I’ve had pleeenty of tequila-inspired stories + nights gone awry (prob not a good thing?). My fav would include me falling dead asleep at 8pm and waking up at 3am unsure of why I had never made it out to the bars with the rest of my roommates. Ah, college.
I had a lot of out of town clients at my old job, and one night a week when the manager would come out, we would usually go out to eat/have a couple drinks….
One particular night, after a Margarita my coworker decides we should have a shot of patron…one led to ~4 more, a taxi ride to Dave and busters, video games and pool until wee hours of the night… I woke up the next morning in my hotel room with an apple eaten to the core sitting on my nightstand (healthy drunk eating, obviously), an overflowing bucket of Dave and Buster tickets on the coffee table, and a D&B card (which I later found out had a large amount of money still loaded on it…Apparently, according to the messages I left on my roomies voice mail, I was struggling to get the guitar hero game to work and just kept loading more and more money onto my card. Lovely.
Clearly not one of my finer moments. I’d like to say I was “immature”, but I was 25!!!!… Breakfast the next morning with the coworkers consisted of zero talking, and lots of dry toast….
Tequila and I don’t get along. Since one night of I Never or some ridiculous college game when we were doing double tequila shots for anything “I never done”. A pail by the bed, all night and all morning, and that’s all I have to say about that. Several other incidents with margaritas at Mexican restaurants when I thought I hadn’t drunk as much as I was sick. Just saying no to tequila.
What a fun fresh spin on the marg!
This recipe sounds yummy. Anything containing fruit and booze, I’m there.
My tequila horror story involves a pontoon boat cruise with coworkers, an open bar and getting tossed by a middle-aged security guard from the backstage area of a Hold Steady concert. It was probably the most fun night of this summer.
Umm, maybe you should begin posting cocktails on your site because this one sounds like I’ve GOT to try it!
im a tequila virgin!! i must change this tho.. a little worried since u said uve been banned from it hehe.. i have no idea what drunk Kelsey looks like… i need to find out sometime lol
xoxo <3
I love cocktails
I would love to try it, but I have no idea where to find black current liquor :/
I only take cocktails occasionally, but it’s good when you are surrounded with good friends. I also drink during my travel to a new place, celebrating a good day, and social gatherings. Seems like this is a good tequila to share with my friends.
Tequila and I don’t get along… Every time I drink tequila it’s a horror story.
I don’t know why, but Tequila makes me allergic to my clothes. You know that song? Tequila makes her clothes fall off? Yea, I’m pretty sure that was written about me, because it happens EVERY TIME. No other alcohol affects me like that.
So I stay as far away from tequila as I can… for the sake of whats left of my dignity.
Freshman year of college + Cheapppp Tequilla = Never left the dorm. Woke up the next morning in the same position I face planted in on my bed. 8 hours of The OC ensued.
I still love it though!!
Someone decided body shots would be a good idea. I was a body and put the shot waaaay to far in my mouth so my friend was practically kissing me when he got it the shot. Prior to that, I had had about 5 tekillaya shots.
Still drink it though every once in awhile. Those nights never equal fun mornings.
Those margaritas look amazing. I don’t drink hard alcohol really, just wine, but I might have to make an exception for those! Glad you are enjoying Texas – I have never been!
I have plenty of tequila horror stories, one of which involved me crawling up the stairs of the bar and weeping. Haha, funny in retrospect.
I don’t know which looks better, the margaritas or the blue burger and salad. I’ll take all three.
Tequila drinking contest with my cousin’s husband – in front of my mom, grandmother, aunts, uncles…I don’t remember much after we hit the halfway mark on the bottle, but apparently we finished it. My mom wouldn’t speak to me for two days.
It just wouldn’t be a Texas experience without having Margaritas! My Best Friend and I have a ritual, we have a Rita date every Friday.
Mmmm I’ll have to try a Blackberry! I’m stuck on the ‘Swirl’. Which is Strawberry and Lime together.
Tequila is one hard liquor that I don’t have a horror story about, unless you count my 21st birthday, in which tequila just happened to be one of many types of alcohol consumed, so I’m not counting it.
Love tequila!
Haha yeah tequila and I aren’t really friends. I generally stay away from it unless I go get Mexican food. There I will probably get a margarita! I took a shot of tequila for my birthday and that wasn’t bad but no more than one tequila shot or I’ll be under the table!!
Yikes! I don’t get along very well with TaKillYa. The first ime I ever had it, I immediately ended up with my head in the toilet. Not too long after that I decided I was going to try it again. I just got a whiff of it and lost my cookies. Needless to say, I stay far, far away from anything that involves TaKillYa.
white tequila shots, too many, lost consciousness, fortunately at home with roomates, multiple episodes of vomiting that I don’t even remember but friends cleaned up, woke up not remembering prior 12 hours of my life, though slept only 4 of those, and finally, one final vomit when I stood up after waking, and that I do remember. Now the smell of white tequila makes me feel sick. A very good thing!
Tequila is a drink that I never dared to try. That is so true I have no plan of changing that. I have nothing against tequila it’s just that I am not used to drinking hard liquor. Anyway, I will try to recommend your Blackberry Margarita recipe to my friends.
ha, no tequila horror stories but I have quite a few with whiskey. The two of us REALLY do not get along. lol
somehow i missed this post when you first put it up, but rachel wilkerson just linked it on her blog. so now i’m left dreaming about tequilla being my friend, because these look wonderful.
my worst story with tequilla would be my 21st birthday. my friend bought me a marg, and threw up into the cup in the middle of the bar before i’d even drank half of it. you’d think it would be time to call it a night, but i had the mind to excuse myself to the bathroom and returned to the dance floor a new woman.
but i have a couple stories from before that where i threw up at 2 and 3pm the day after a tequilla night. eesh. tequilla is either your best friend or your worst enemy.
YES! I do, in fact. On my 21st birthday I went to a Mexican restaurant and had my first (legal) drink. They brought me over a free Tequila shot for my birthday. I had never taken a shot before and my stomach was not prepared to have the alcohol in it so quickly. It went down…and immediately came back up. All over the rest of my food and the table. I am strictly a vodka girl!
I know this is an older post but I would really like to try this recipe- it looks amazing! Do you mean limeade concentrate? Or limeade? Is 1 shot the equivalent of 1 oz? Thank u!
