Madison Part 1

by jenna on July 3, 2009

I’m blogging from 35,000 feet in the air!

As I type, we are currently on route to Cincinatti and from there Milwaukee. I’m sandwiched in between my parents and since Ryan was sort of “late” in getting his flight, he actually lucked out and got a non-stop flight. This morning the alarm went off at 6 and we waited until all three alarms were dinging that we set. I felt like my eyes were glued shut! There wasn’t much time but I still managed to get something substantial in my tummy before heading out the door.

a banana with raw almond butter and unsweetened almond milk with chocolate Amazing Meal. I have to admit, I think all Amazing Grass products are best when mixed in a smoothie or at least sweetened vanilla almond milk, but this wasn’t too bad. It tasted like unsweetened chocolate milk and I instantly had a surge of energy. However I didn’t get to finish it in time and had to leave the rest in the car because we were at the airport without a second to spare. Once at the airport, I waited in the ridiculously long Starbucks line to get a double Awake tea. Booyah!

Now I have to say, I think I’m a pretty good traveler. I like to plan ahead and always bring a plethora of snacks because you never know what could happen! I brought two baggies for this trip:

We’ve got SuperFood, teas, almonds and bars. I love bringing teas, especially on airplanes because all you have to do is ask for a cup of hot water. Much better than getting a soda during beverage service, I’d say!

When we got to Cinci to change plans I was quite hungry—Starbucks oatmeal was perfect!

My dad got a chocolate banana vivanno and I tasted it—–woah, it was SO good! I wish they could make it with soymilk though rather than 2% milk. Starbucks, you should really market a vegan vivanno! 😉
Because of the time change I was REALLY hungry by the time we got to my grandparent’s house—-it was 1:45 Florida time! My grandma set out a big platter of the most delicious fruit, pickles and mini croissants. I had peanut butter in my croissant and the rest had ham!

I was a much happier camper once I had eaten…..I was seriously starting to feel FAINT!
Wisconsin winters a bit too harsh for me but summers are absolutely gorgeous. Here are in my grandparent’s back yard. The weather was so nice!

After lunch we drove the 90 miles over to Madison (my grandparents are headed over in the morning). I shut my eyes for a brief second….

Then dove into a Greens bar! Its going to be a long night—gotta keep my energy up!

Just now got into the hotel and we both are POOPED. I’m sort of mad, too, that I had to pay $30 for internet. All hotel rooms should come with that included, no?! Ryan has totally crashed on the bed but I’m about to get him up to either go take a walk or exercise before dinner at 6:00.
We are going here for the rehearsal dinner tonight—I hear good things! Being the history buff I am, I am just excited that it is 150 years old!

Last time I was in Wisconsin it was SNOWING!! It was also the very first time I blogged!

I had just started culinary school and they made me dress up in my uniform to cook dinner! lol

Stay tuned for Madison Part II :)

Hi Jenna! I work at Starbucks….you can order your vivanno with soy. You just can’t order frappuccinos with soy. Just ask for soy next time :)

Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope July 3, 2009 at 5:01 pm

Glad to hear you arrived safely! Yes, summers in Wisconsin are terrible… and they last until MAY! Haha, but our summers can definitely be fabulous. You couldn’t have picked a better weekend (weather-wise) to come visit. Have a wonderful time!!! :)

Rosalie July 3, 2009 at 5:02 pm

Your blog posts have come soooo far :)

I think you can order drinks at starbucks with soy, but it’s $.50 extra for a tall (and probably more expensive for larger drinks, and also depending on the store…)

Christie @ Quit Your Diet July 3, 2009 at 5:05 pm

I’m drooling over that croissant!

Hope you guys have a fun time at the wedding/wedding festivities!

Sarah July 3, 2009 at 5:13 pm

There is an extra charge for soy but it doesn’t increase with size.

Kiki July 3, 2009 at 5:14 pm

So cute! Hope u’re having a fab time! Cant wait for Part II x

Judy July 3, 2009 at 5:19 pm

Thanks for posting more pictures of Dexter! He is so sweet!
Enjoy Madison, such a cool college town, I’ve been there several times for continuing education seminars. I also traveled to Wisconsin for the exam for my professional license (I’m an architect)
The weather at home today hasn’t been too rainy, enjoy the change in climate! But we SO need the rain at the stadium, to grow the grass back that got damaged from SuperBowl. (What an ordeal THAT was!)

Jasmine (Sweet and Fit) July 3, 2009 at 5:23 pm

love that pic =)

can’t believe you have to pay for internet though! although, I’m thankful you did – so you can blog!

Tay July 3, 2009 at 5:24 pm

Go ahead and order the vivanno with soy! I order it with NF milk – very simple!

*Andrea* July 3, 2009 at 5:27 pm

Lora July 3, 2009 at 5:32 pm

Too funny! It seems I’m following you around now…First you inspired a trip to Charleston (thanks to the hubby’s air miles and hotel points!) and heading up to Kenosha to hang out with some Badger alum tomorrow. : )

Have fun in WI and enjoy the cool summer air and wedding!

K July 3, 2009 at 5:36 pm

Glad you made it safe and sound!! Your snacks make you look well prepared :)

The Fit Collegiate July 3, 2009 at 5:37 pm

Mmm, I love Tutto Pasta…it’s such a fun restaurant, right on State Street and everything. I’m quite jealous, I love Madison; all of my mom’s family lives there and my sister went to school at the UW, so it’s basically my second city. :-)

bibixs July 3, 2009 at 5:41 pm

Hi Jenna!! I hope you have a good trip! hey i have a question, is starbucks oatmeal any good? i haven’t tried it yet!! did you liked it?
and oh, snow!!! how beautiful!! i haven’t seen snow in like… 4 years or something!

Maria July 3, 2009 at 5:50 pm

You look so cute in your culinary gear ;). Hehe, grandparents/parents always want to see us in our uniforms/school gear. I’m always extra prepared to when I go on trips—bag of nuts, green powder, fruits, snack bars, cereal, oatmeal, etc. It helps if you’re the kind of person who is always starving!

Erin July 3, 2009 at 5:53 pm

Oh croissants…how I love thee.
How cute are you in that pic in your uniform?! You look like a wee young lass!

Holly July 3, 2009 at 6:11 pm

Tutto is amazing – you will love it!

Steph Runs the City July 3, 2009 at 6:20 pm

Courtney (The Hungry Yogini) July 3, 2009 at 6:28 pm

So fun!!! Looks like it’s going to be a FABULOUS trip!!!

Jennie July 3, 2009 at 6:32 pm

I stayed at the Westin La Paloma in Tucson last week, a very nice resort, and I was mad that I had to pay for internet as well. Funny since even some McDonald’s have WiFi these days. You’d think at least the nicer resorts would include the service without a fee. Have a great weekend!

Laura July 3, 2009 at 6:48 pm

Hi Jenna! If you have a couple hours in Milwaukee before you head to the airport, check out Beans & Barley cafe just north of Downtown near UW Milwaukee. It’s a vegetarian / vegan place that’s delish!

Shannon (The Daily Balance) July 3, 2009 at 6:53 pm

have funfunFUN! Can’t wait to hear about it!

Still Life in South America July 3, 2009 at 6:59 pm

Have fun and enjoy your trip. I never thought to bring tea bags with me. Great idea! Sounds like you’ve had quite the journey today. Get some rest and don’t forget about our beautiful sunshine state.

I just started reading your blog a few weeks ago, and LOVE that you’re in Madison for a wedding (my spouse and I got married in the Capitol there)…AND that you’re at Tutto Pasta for the rehearsal dinner, because that’s where we had ours! We had it in the beautiful atrium space…hope you’re enjoying it!

Meg July 3, 2009 at 9:00 pm

Enjoyed Madison part one. You certainly are the prepared traveler. Great idea with the teas on the airplane.

Can’t wait for part 2. Have fun!

Matt July 3, 2009 at 9:07 pm

You can get a Vivanno with soymilk. I order it like that every time and it has never been a problem. All you have to do is ask!

Alyssa July 3, 2009 at 9:09 pm

I hope you guys have a blast up here in the midwest! :)

Michelle Hisae July 3, 2009 at 9:13 pm

Great planning ahead! It’s hard to have great food experiences while en route unless you bring your own. Have fun at the rehearsal!

kristi (sweet cheeks) July 3, 2009 at 9:34 pm

mmmm Starbucks vivannos are AMAZING! I love them so much! I have not tried their oatmeal, but really want to know, haha!

Reply July 3, 2009 at 9:44 pm

You were in my hometown, you should try shainghi mama’s or melt, if you ever come back. smart traveler with your snacks. Enjoy your weekend, and have a safe trip home. b

Island Girl Eats July 3, 2009 at 10:59 pm

I love all of the treats that you packed for the flights! I hope that you have a nice weekend.

Donna July 3, 2009 at 11:04 pm

Is Ryan older than you? He definitely looks older in the pictures. I hope you have a great time at the wedding.

jenna July 4, 2009 at 8:02 am

R is 8 years older than me.

Jaci July 3, 2009 at 11:40 pm

I work at Starbucks and i’ve made plenty of Vivanos with soy (not vegan though, cause the protein powder we put in it is whey protein). You can use any milk preference on any drink!

Caroline July 4, 2009 at 12:12 am

That oatmeal looks great, but it IS a bummer that it’s not vegan.
Have fun this weekend!

Mary July 4, 2009 at 1:44 am

I work at Starbucks– you can definitely get soymilk in any vivanno instead of 2% :)

Susan July 4, 2009 at 5:00 am

Ha, I worked at Starbucks and was going to tell you about the soy milk thingy… but looks like the hoards of other Sbux employees have already done that!! 😛 Starbucks is surprisingly great at customizing drink orders, seriously. They’ll make anything for you, and refund/exchange it if it tastes yucky!

I don’t know anything about Wisconsin except there’s a lot of cheese? 😛 Hope you’re having a great time!!!

Krissy - Single Serving July 4, 2009 at 8:53 am

The restaurant looks lovely and that lasagna looks incredible. Glad you are having a good time! Enjoy the Farmer’s Market (and the wedding)!!

Tess July 4, 2009 at 9:02 am

What a fun trip! Festivities and family make for a great holiday weekend! Thanks for blogging even though it cost.

Emily July 4, 2009 at 11:05 am

They will make it with soy milk if you just ask! I get nonfat milk instead of 2% all of the time!
