Happy Friday!
Now, I’d consider myself a pretty big nutella lover. There was a time in college when my roommate and I would sit and watch Lifetime movies with a jar of nutella between us and a box of graham crackers on my lap. That was fun.
I also have enjoyed more than a few nutella crepes in my day. In my mind, there’s really not much better than a warm crepe filled with oozing nutella and maybe a few banana slices.
But nutella hot chocolate?
How I have lived on this earth for almost twenty six years without trying such a thing? How have I dared to call myself a true nutella lover without trying this simple heavenly creation?
If you’re anything like me you look for every excuse to eat a spoonful of nutella. It pretty much goes on anything from oatmeal to graham crackers to fingers. I can’t get enough of this stuff.
On to nutella hot chocolate. All you need are two ingredients—nutella and milk! Well, and whipped cream. But that’s a given.
Nutella hot chocolate tastes like regular hot chocolate, but with the subtle hint of hazelnut. I absolutely love it, especially alongside a few linzer cookies.
Make this tonight. It’s a much better option than beer and will leave you feeling wonderful and lively in the morning to boot!
Quick and Easy Nutella Hot Chocolate
serves 1
1 T nutella
1 cup milk
Whisk nutella into milk and bring to a simmer on the stove. Serve in your favorite mug with whipped cream and marshmallows.
Nutella, I love you.

I know this is sacrilegious but I don’t really like Nutella. I’m weird. However, I really want that hot chocolate, and more specifically I want to drink it out of that mug. And only that mug!
I agree – I just want the mug!
I think I seen a cookbook at the bookstore recently for recipes just with Nutella!…
hahaha it was my mom’s when she was a toddler!
I don’t like it either!!! (scared of ex-communication…)
Sara
Same here. I don’t like hazelnuts, so it’s not too surprising. But I do love chocolate peanut butter!
oh my word, Nutella is a gift straight from the heavens. seriously, i need this now!
basically, it’s food proof that God wants us to be happy. one scoop at a time
No need to wait until tonight! I’m making this now!
I’ve never had Nutella… I’ve been wanting to try it but I’m a little scared that I might become obsessed with it and gain 10 Nutella pounds… that would not be good!
nutella pounds don’t count.
I ? Nutella! It’s the best thing ever & my mom makes this amazing Nutella Bundt Cake that I go crazy for. I need to steal her recipe asap
I’ve never tried Nutella either! But to do my civic duty as an ELR reader, I will pick up a jar today and have my first spoonful!
I actually don’t like Nutella! To be honest, I’m not a big fan of Hazelnuts. It’s crazy how simple this ‘recipe’ is for nutella hot chocolate though. I’m sure lots of nutella lovers will be happy to see this.
Oh my God, Jenna I love you! I never, ever thought of this! I’m a Nutella and spoon kind of girl so this will go down a treat tonight with me and my step-daughter. My daughter who loves Nutella but doesn’t like hot chocolate might like this too.
Now I want Nutella…
awesome! Let me know how y’all like it!
Oh goodness!!!! <3 NUTELLA
You had me at Nutella!
I absolutely love the mug! Is that Bambi on it?
I think so! It was my mom’s!
I don’t like Nutella! ick!
but I do love high quality dark hot chocolate
(just no Nutella please!!)
Some hot chocolates are so overly sweet-I love one that is not oversugared!
I’m the opposite…I like Nutella, but I’m not a fan of hot chocolate!
Oh my word! I could write a collection of sonnets declaring my love for Nutella. This recipe is so easy – I can’t wait to try it. My favorite way to abuse, er, eat Nutella is on a toasted crumpet. The Nutella gets all ooey-warm-gooey and practically drips all over my chin when I bite into the crumpet. Love!!
Oh no you didn’t.
Um amazing! We could so go for a huge mug of this…as we sit and watch the snow not getting shoveled. Ha!
Lifetime movies with my roommates characterized a large portion of my college experience as well
If only we had known about nutella hot chocolate back then…
Nutella is the perfect food
SO glad that someone else in Blog World likes Nutella as much as I do. I have 3 jars of Nutella in the pantry, why they’re not empty yet I don’t know. At least I have enough to make this hot cocoa!
Sounds like a warm cup of loveliness, Jenna. I just made my own chocolate nut butter last week, but it is too coarse for this sort of thing — sometimes there’s really no substitute for Nutella!
I want that hot chocolate!! But I want that mug even more! Where did you get it at? By looks of it I’m guessing its vintage and probably not mass produced
Oh my word this sounds amazing!
Ohhhhhh….. I cannot wait to try this tonight!
I’ve been experimenting with homemade hot chocolate this winter. Since I live in NY, we’ve had our fair share of snowy evenings that just call for it! That or a chocolate martini…
I’ve had some hits (made with steamed milk and rich milk chocolate) and some misses (made with semi-sweet chips and a dash of cayenne pepper) but I think this one may be just the ticket!!
Now where did I put your recipe for homemade marshmallows??
PS: Oddest Nutella pairing to date? I had it on a salty garlicky bagel… It was AMAZING!
This is brilliant!!!
Amazing. Simply amazing.
My Nutella confession is this: I love it so much that I have only had it about three times. I don’t eat it more because I know for a fact that I would get addicted and end up gaining 100 Nutella pounds. Fact.
I like to think it’s healthy…like carrots or broccoli.
Why have I never thought of this? Yum!!!
Did you make extra for us?
sure–come on over!
I’ve been looking for a recipe just like this–love it!!
Oh I don’t mind if I do
Ah, Nutella. I love it, too. This sounds delicious, of course. We had the same idea today because I blogged about Nutella rice treats.
Mmm I love Nutella! I could eat it by the spoonful
That hot chocolate looks especially tempting in that adorable mug!
Oh…my….. – amaaaazing!
I need to get home right now to my Nutella jar to make this. Looks incredible!
This is genius. However, I can’t make it when my girls are around or I’d run out of my precious Nutella too quickly!
It might be hard to believe but I’m really not a massive Nutella fan. I wasn’t really raised with it as a kid so it’s not a breakfast staple, but I bet it tastes great in hot chocolate!
What a simple great idea.
I think you have just change my life!
I adore nutella….no I’m obsessed with nutella. And while I like to eat it straight out of the jar with an enormous spoon, I think switching it up and finding a new use like hot chocolate is pure genius.
I will be trying this ASAP
I’ve never had nutella!!! I don’t know why not, because I’m positive I’d like it (considering I’m like a nut butter fanatic.) YUM! This recipe would be perfect on a cold night
I just died.
This looks deeeelightful! And I just picked up a new jar. Lovely Jenna!
I loooove hot chocolate! Mostly as a way to consume whip cream
. Is there anything better than homemade whip cream??
No..no there’s not. Homemade whipped cream is where it’s at.
ahhh i love nutella! and i had nutella hot chocolate in nantes, france…amazing!!
Oh my goshhhh! This is genius!! You’re amazing! I need to try this immediately. I’m a nutella addict!!!
Hahaha my college roommate and I watched SO many Lifetime movies. Nothing tempers the stress of academia like a screening of “The Baby-sitter’s Seduction”
This looks delicious and may just have to happen this weekend in my kitchen!
hahahahaha so classic!
My husband might marry me all over again when i make this for him tonight.
thanks so much for the chocolate inspiration!!
do it!
You make such a simple thing so beautiful!
This title got me SO excited to open the post. Nutella hot chocolate just seems so RIGHT.
Wow. I was already over being at work this morning, and now that I have read this, it’s all I can do to keep myself from jumping over this counter and making a run for it!!! I want this in my face NOW!!!
How did you get that spoonful to stay still for the picture? Every time I spoon some out it jumps in my mouth!
hah! It took a lot of takes.
This made me laugh as I was eating a banana smeared with nutella as I was reading this! Might have to try this and the crepes with nutella and bananas!
Seriously, I dont know who you come up with this stuff!
omg!! i must try this! i love nutella!
Nutella and Ritz crackers = sweet + salty (yum!)
I just bought some Justin’s hazelnut and chocolate spread and I think I know what I’m going to be having for an afternoon pick me up…
Ohmygosh! This sounds like heaven in a mug. If I had a jar of nutella in my pantry I’d add a glob to my morning coffee!
Truly a brilliant idea Jenna
Holy yum this sounds so delicious!!! Nutella was my favorite thing when i went to france.
Dear me, you are a genius! I used to go over to my grandmother’s house every day after school and she would make me nutella snacks on whole wheat toast…. and sometimes white bread with butter and sugar on top but we had to keep that one a secret from Mom
Oh. my. gosh. I think you just changed my life. Can’t wait to try this!
Love the green polka dots, by the way!
That mug is just darling! Where is it from?!
My grandmother’s attic…literally! It was my mom’s when she was a little girl.
I just discovered your blog and everyday I’m so happy I did. Everything just sounds so yummy…sigh…
thank you! hi!
Now this I have never heard of! Yum Jenna!
Thanks because I am making some in 5 mins.
what a great idea
I fell in love with nutella when I had it for the first time in France on my post high school graduation Europe trip. Now here’s my question – where’s a good place to get a nutella crepe in the Bay Area? The ones I’ve had don’t have nearly enough nutella in them!
I don’t know! I haven’t really experimented with French bistros in SF much…Adam and I shared one at Crepevine and it was pretty darn good (for being a chain!).
I feel like this, and this alone, will make an outdoor run in 28 degree snowy weather worth it. Or maybe it’s best to just skip the run and have two mugs
You are a genious
Um.. wait. I watch Lifetime movies with Nutella in my lap right now… ? I’m pretty proud of it, I’m not gonna lie
that’s awesome. And so right.
I may now die happy. Oh my goodness. Are there any words for this?!
Yes.
Delicious.
I am a nutella whore!!! LOVE LOVE. I mix it with fluff, peanut butter, jelly, but have yet to make hot choc with it!!! Yah for a new thing to try
WOW!!!!! This is awesome! I am drinking it right now and it is fantastic. It’s just what I needed today. I am feeling tired of winter and think I have a case of the lack of sun blahs. This is just what the dr. ordered. Thank you !!
yay!! I just ate lunch and think I’m going to make myself another cup now, too…
Yum!!! Looks so delicious and so simple!!!!
oh my gosh. i die. <3
Genius! Though, I may not like you very much when my pants stop fitting.
Oh boy! Nutella crepes with bananas takes me right back to Europe. Mmmmmmm.
How have I never heard of this before? I’m buying Nutella tonight – right after yoga
My fav way to abuse nutella is by dipping pecans into it – that way I can tell myself I’m being “healthy” because pecans are nuts and all . . .
Okay people need to stop tempting me with Nutella!! Everywhere on the blogs I’m seeing Nutella and all I want is a crepe with Nutella and bananas now,
OMG I LOVE NUTELLA!!! The first time i tried it i ate it straight from the jar for a week!!! Ate a whole jar before i actually tried it on something! I will be making this hot treat tonight!
While traveling in Europe, a friend and I lived off of Nutella and a loaf of bread for 3 days since it’s all we could afford. It turned me off of it for a little while, but I might just have to end my Nutella dry spell with this hot chocolate. It looks amazing!
I love nutella! I think I will try this tonight with some almond milk. yummy!
I am a nutella lover too!!! I was just reading this recipe thinking that I must make this and a commercial for nutella came on TV. It must be fate!
Okay Jenna, you must try this: next time you have a (nearly) empty nutella jar, fill it with your favorite cereal and milk
its sooooooooooooooo good and like cold choco milk!
Oh man, nutella I AM going to love you … well, actually, it’s a knock-off Nutella, but I got it in Bruges, so I’m thinking it’ll work just pleasantly brilliant too. Hot chocolate here I come! Thanks again for the great recipe Jenna!
Yum! I hope you’re going to make something else with Nutella for World Nutella Day! It’s coming up on February 5th!
Hope you’ll participate
Sara, founder World Nutella Day – NutellaDay.com
Love nutella! Can’t believe I never thought of this. I have a jar all ready and waiting…
Nutella on anything is heaven!
And that mug is SO CUTE!
This was really yummy – I just made this but I used the microwave because I didn’t want to dirty a pot!
Thanks for the fun idea!
That looks delicious.
The first time my family went to Europe, we brought back like six jars of Nutella, just to realize that they did sell it in our grocery store in the US.
You just made my day!! This will be made several times over the weekend! Quick questions, can you substitute almond milk?
that looks seriously delicious! whipped cream makes everything yummy, as does nutella
My favourite sandwich at the moment is sliced apple and nutella on wholemeal- sounds crazy but it is amazing. To make it even better add melted cheese- sounds crazier but the salty sweet combo is delicious! I really want to know how I’v never considered making nutella hot chocolate before! I need to rectify that asap!
Oh my goodness gracious — you just made my day. This past summer, my cupboard was never without Nutella. Enter a cold winter that makes me just want to curl up on a couch after work and no more half-marathon training, and honestly, I’m afraid to keep Nutella stocked anywhere near me. I’m afraid of those Nutella pounds …
but this hot chocolate is so making me go to the grocery store tonight.
I love everything nutella. You are my HERO!!!
This is a phenomenal idea! Nutella is seriously heavenly. I remember in college we took a weeklong trip to Rome and at breakfast every morning they had little Nutella packets to put on bread or toast. I literally hoarded them each day and when I returned they were all scattered about my suitcase
ohsnap i have to try this!
Nutella is my favourite food group. I can’t believe I never thought of this before!
Wanna know something totally crazy? Up until a few weeks ago, the BF had never had Nutella! Crazy, I know! We were in a dessert place and I ordered a crepe with Nutella and sliced banana and split it with him.
Another crazy thing…Nutella sandwiches used to make my nose bleed when I was a kid. My parents or I would smear some in between slices of soft white bread and without fail, I’d get a nosebleed. I have no idea why (wasn’t allergic to nuts) but thankfully I grew out of it.
Brilliant. I need this asap!
I am worried my boyfriend is secretly starting to read your blog and like it more than I do.
This morning I was happily reading your blog and wait for breakfast inspiration to hit me when he said to me “Don’t come in the kitchen! I’m making you breakfast” which is a lovely thing to hear on a Saturday morning. It ended up being one of the most delicious breakfasts ever in the form of Nutella and strawberry filled crepes…I had just finished reading this post and couldn’t help but wonder where he got the inspiration!! I ate quite a bit of Nutella at breakfast and still can’t stop thinking about it. I have a problem!
You are like the superwoman of the kitchen… you should attempt your own Nutella.
What a genius idea!! I can’t believe I never thought of this… so simple, yet so awesome…
Hi, got here from SUAR’s blog. Love Nutella and will have to try some of the recipies. When we were in Europe we saw 5 Kg jars of Nutella. For the metrically challenged, that’s 11 pounds. They are huge. At first I thought they were a special display, but then we found a store where they were on sale.
I’ve been CRAVING Nutella like crazy and decided to make this tonight. I used whole milk and a heaping TBS of Nutella and found it to be a bit bland. It tasted too milky (a flavor I don’t care for) if I add cocoa powder would it drown out the hazelnut flavor? I might use hazelnut milk and more Nutella next time. YUM.
Curse you for sharing this. My willpower… it’s not good.
this is yet another time I think – why didn’t I ever think of that??
Looks delicious as always!
My mother bought me a jar of European Nutella today and this is the first thing I made with it. After eating the sample out of the plastic Nutella-shaped-container. I realize this is months after you posted, it was 70 degrees today, and 3T of Nutella in one day is probably not the healthiest thing but … yum. I skipped the whipped cream though.
Dash Cinnamon + smidgen of vanilla, makes this even that much more delectable!
If you haven’t done a Pinterest search on “Nutella,” you should. It’s unreal the recipes there.
It”s ok on a sandwitch with peanut butter dutch thing, better on ginger snaps or coffee cookies but best just off the spoon with peanut butter and strawberry jam!!!!!!!
Greetings
I’ve been gazing longingly at your recipes for days now, wishing I had more time off from work to try some (read: all) of them, and I just happened upon this one. It was funny to me because I also happened upon this recipe myself last winter, and my hot chocolate preference is forever changed.
I was attempting to make some nutella and peanut butter fudge (delicious) but I ended up just pouring the nutella and milk into a mug and reading all night. The only differences to note are that I used vanilla soy milk, and I sprinkled the top with cinnamon.
If that’s not heaven, I don’t know what is.
You are a genius! : )
I was scouring my cabinets last night looking for a way to make hot chocolate — with no cocoa powder in the house. Little did I know, there was an alternative right in my pantry the whole time! Thanks!
