It’s Friday and this is so totally not a real recipe….but please bear with me!
I am in the midst of baking 200 chocolate chip cookies, writing a speech and trying to decide which pair of shoes to wear while presenting at the American Library Association conference (ALA) in Anaheim this weekend. Flats, pumps, heels? Heels would be cute and mature but there’s always the possibility that I will fall flat on my face walking in the door. It’s happened before. Really, I just want to wear my flip-flops but not sure how appropriate that would be on stage. This is clearly a pressing matter and I NEED YOUR HELP!
Okay, I’ll stop shouting. Truth is, I am super duper nervous about speaking to hundreds of librarians this weekend. I think the most people I’ve ever given a real honest-to-goodness speech to was fifteen and that was junior year of high school. I won’t even go into the time I accidentally said another word that sounds a lot like organism while giving an anatomy presentation. It might not sound like a big deal to you, but when you are seventeen, awkward and “going out” with a guy in the front row, it’s a big deal. Heaven help me.
I’ll be at the conference this weekend speaking about the journey leading up to my book, what culinary school was really like and starting this blog. Then we’ll all eat cookies, call it a day and I’ll hop back on a plane back home!
These high-protein smoothies made a lovely lil’ snackie snack. Cantaloupe has been on mega-sale at every market I go to, and to keep up with all that melon I started making afternoon smoothies! Like I said, this isn’t a “real” recipe, as it is a method. You can add whatever you like to these smoothies (additional fruit like bananas would be great!) and enjoy them for breakfasts or snacks on the go.
I hope y’all have a great Friday! If you need me, I’ll be buried under fifty pounds of chocolate chip cookie dough.
Cantaloupe Smoothies
makes 2 large smoothies (about 16 oz each)
Ingredients:
1 cantaloupe, seeded scooped out and roughly chopped
1 cup Greek yogurt (I used 2%. I wouldn’t recommend using nonfat because it won’t turn out as creamy)
2 tbsp honey
1 cup ice
Directions:
Process all ingredients in a blender until smooth. Add more/less ice depending on personal preference. Enjoy!
Time:
5 minutes

June 22, 2012 at 3:31 ami consider this a real recipe! it looks delicious and it’s the perfect snack/post-dinner treat on these scorching summer days we’ve been having (100 degrees in Vermont…what!!?) ๐

June 22, 2012 at 3:52 amHi Jenna,
I’ve been reading your blog for literally years,
In that time I’ve see you deal with all sorts of cr*p from intimidating to heartbreaking on a scale I hope to not experience, and you keep going and getting better.
We’ve seen you evolve into someone really brave and fun and relaxed. You seem a lot more relaxed these days.
Don’t worry about what you could do wrong, think about all the amazing stuff you’ve done right and how you really do get to people with your blog. You’re writing a book because someone saw how well people respond to you on your blog. The librarians are just more people. People who love to read, your kind of people.
As for the shoes go with simple kitten heels, they have all the sophistication and prettiness of a heel, with way less chance of falling and a far higher degree of comfort.
I hope this wasn’t weird, I’m not crazy I swear, I’ve just been reading this for a long time and wanted to help.
Good Luck.

June 22, 2012 at 4:05 amGood luck to you during your speech!! I’m sure you’ll do great … you are no longer that “awkward” 17 year old we all used to be! ๐
Karen
June 22, 2012 at 4:32 amBest of luck, Jenna, but no worries – you will win the audience over with your personality and charm, and of course your cookies! Just do your thing…stay in the moment and enjoy!:)

June 22, 2012 at 4:41 amBahahaha. I have always been concerned about making that mix up!

June 22, 2012 at 4:43 amNot a bad place to be on a Friday morning! ๐
I’ve been inhaling cantaloupe lately – they’re sweeter than candy right now! Definitely trying this frosty smoothie sometime soon.
GOOD LUCK at your speech! You’ll do great! ๐

June 22, 2012 at 4:45 amGOOD LUCK! Annnnd I have that glass- Target?
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat
June 22, 2012 at 4:49 amMmm these sound good!! I’ve been buying tons of cantaloupe lately too (why is it that watermelon isn’t on sale even half as often as cantaloupe is?!) and recently made a lighter blended cantaloupe slushie-like drink (http://eat-spin-run-repeat.com/recipes-2/?recipe_id=6025772). I’m going to try your recipe (or non-recipe!) next!
PS. I’d go for the pumps if I was you – I’m sure the librarians will all think you’re fab!
Heather @ Girlyeverafter
June 22, 2012 at 5:24 amYou’ll do great this weekend! The positive is that you’re speaking about something you know and are passionate about. It makes speaking to an audience so much easier than in college when you have to talk about a topic you crammed for;)
joelle (on a pink typewriter)
June 22, 2012 at 5:25 amGood luck – you’ll do great! And I’d go with heels – more professional onstage. Flats don’t have the same effect during a presentation like that, in my opinion.

June 22, 2012 at 5:47 amLooks awesome! Love your new picture ๐

June 22, 2012 at 5:52 amGood luck Jenna. Just stay calm and you will do amazing! I would recommend wearing heels.
Ali @ Gimme Some Oven
June 22, 2012 at 5:59 amI vote some really fun heels! Kick things up a notch. ๐
You’ll be great! And THIS looks so fresh and tasty for summer!

June 22, 2012 at 6:09 amThese would also probably taste very good if put into ice pop molds!

June 22, 2012 at 6:11 amDelicious! I love the “not real” recipes. They’re usually the easiest to make and easiest to eat (cause they’re just so good)!
Good luck on your presentation Jenna…you will do great (hopefully in talking about food you won’t have to get into any – ehem – “science” terms)! LOL.
Cheers and happy weekend to you.
brandi
June 22, 2012 at 6:24 amyou’ll be great! i say heels if it’s not a super long time standing up there, especially if you have ones that are comfy.
hopefully you won’t be talking about organisms in this speech ๐ i’ve had equally embarrassing public speaking moments.

June 22, 2012 at 6:43 amOooh I LOVE this idea! I never would’ve thought to use cantaloupe in smoothies (no idea why!) but I bet it’s incredible.
Ruthie
June 22, 2012 at 6:52 amFrom an actual librarian ๐ – I would go with the pumps or flats. Whatever makes you feel confident and comfortable! Good luck! Wish I could be at ALA to see your presentation!
Nakia
June 22, 2012 at 7:02 amThis makes me wish I didn’t have a cantaloupe allergy.
Alicia @ The Reluctant Home Cook
June 22, 2012 at 7:24 amGo with comfortable kitten heels! You will feel more professional and confident with a slight heel. I give a lot of presentations for work and suggest writing out your introduction to get started and then go with an outline and key points for the body of the speech. Write out a brief conclusion to finish strong. And remember that silence is okay when you transition to another topic – much better than saying “um” or using another filler word. Hope that helps – you’ll do great!

June 22, 2012 at 7:28 amLove cantaloupe & banana smoothies with vanilla essence blended in!

June 22, 2012 at 7:38 amSo exciting that you’re speaking at the ALA conference – you’ll knock ’em dead! Can’t wait to read your book on my Nook ๐
Margarita
June 22, 2012 at 7:55 ami’ve always been for comfort and safety over sexy, so i would say some cute peep-toe ballet flats… but women always look better with heels, so bring both and see how you feel when you get there, maybe?
good luck! you will do just fine… if you need to, bring a little thing you can grip in your hand while talking. maybe a paper clip or a little stick. that works for some people. ๐

June 22, 2012 at 7:59 amGood luck Jenna, you’ll do a fantastic job of your speech, I just know it. As someone wise once said to me, “it’s never as bad as your brain tells you that it is.” Just focus on those chocolate chip cookies that you’ll get to enjoy at the end of it all. ๐ Oh, and go for the pumps! xoxo.

June 22, 2012 at 8:23 amI’m going to be at ALA this weekend too! I can’t wait to hear your presentation on Sunday…I’ve been reading for a long time and it will be so fun to hear you in person…my friends are jealous they chose non-librarian careers! : )
FYI most conference attendees will prob be in flats because we have to walk around so much, so if you do go that route, nobody is going to think anything of it! : )

June 22, 2012 at 10:26 amdo you have any dressy/professional-ish wedges? Kind of a rare breed, but more stable and they give a lower possibility of trippage.
can’t wait to try the cantaloupe smoothie! I’m on a big smoothie kick these days. thanks!

June 22, 2012 at 10:42 amI’m sure you’ll do fine, but you are much braver than me! I do not like public speaking…..but I’m sure at some point God will place me in that position. Something about conquering my fears and all lately, challenging myself. I’m all about that part…but the thought of public speaking makes me what to hide. ๐
Love this idea….don’t know why I never thought of canteloupe in smoothie. Totally what I might now do with some peaches that are starting to not look so pretty. Thanks!!
Lee, Anytime Health
June 22, 2012 at 10:58 amI consider this a “real recipe.” It requires some elbow grease ๐ As for your speech, GOOD LUCK! I get really excited about public speaking until about 5 minutes before I go on. Then I freak out and my heart stops. After the first minute or so, I calm down. I think it’s all worth it though. The after feeling is AMAZING!
Gennin
June 22, 2012 at 12:17 pmGood Luck with your speech! I hate giving speeches too. Sweaty palms, very sweaty palms. And, I’m always afraid I’m going to burp for some reason. Never have, but always afraid. As for the shoes, wear whatever is comfortable for you EXCEPT for flip-flops. Anyways, good luck, don’t burp and I can’t wait to hear all about it!

June 22, 2012 at 2:59 pmThat smoothis looks so incredibly refreshing! So “summery” too!
Good luck at the conference. I’m not a fan of public speaking, but I’m usually fine – energized even – once I settle in.

June 22, 2012 at 5:23 pmRecipe sounds easy and great. Maybe I’ll leave off the yogurt and add red wine, lemon, and basil leaves instead. You say these are for breakfast?! I’m shocked ๐
I’d go with flats. Anaheim is a vacation town.–it’s probably at the convention center as most of these things are, and often very hot towards July. Heels during the day down there seem overdressed/trying too hard. You might need to walk far, and if you’re comfortable, you’ll feel more relaxed. IMO.
I love author talks and have gone to 200+ over the years….only one made a less than favorable impression: Caroline Kennedy. The gal is worth several hundred million, has the best education, and every other word is “um”. Distracting.
Just be yourself, speak like you’re talking to friends. Which you really are as librarians are predisposed to like you. You’ll do great. They aren’t expecting Einstein, ya know ๐
Just go easy on the breakfast wine coolers.

June 22, 2012 at 5:25 pmJennifer ~ You are one lucky young lady to have all this loving support around you. I laughed out loud at many of the comments (out of love and thank you !) I did leave my little comment with #2. You will be fabulous. And definitely a heel !!

June 22, 2012 at 7:56 pmCantaloupe is my favourite!! This looks so great.
Just had to drop a line to say I made the EXACT same mistake for a word that sounded like “organism” in an 8th grade science presentation. I have never forgotten it.. Still makes me squirm and cringe!!! Haha.. the most awkward moment.
And I would do some low kitten heels ๐

June 23, 2012 at 4:29 pmYou just may have convinced me to try cantaloupe…for some reason, I’m not as crazy about it as I am about other fruits. And you’ll do great!! ๐ Remember – you love to read + librarians love to read. Therefore, they’ll love you! ๐ And I agree about kitten heels. Or low, comfy wedges! xoxo

June 24, 2012 at 12:23 pmMy mom Stephanie is a librarian and she is at the ALA conference. My sister and I have been reading your blog for years and told my mom to definitely check out your presentation. She just sent me a picture of her with you at the conference–made my day! June 24, 2012 at 12:36 pmI remember the moment of your scientific slip-up like it was yesterday. Hilarious. Best of luck with your presentation. You’ll be fabulous and just think, no matter what happens, in 10 years you can look back and laugh! Good luck, Jenna and congrats.

June 24, 2012 at 2:07 pmWhat shoes did you end up wearing?
As a librarian who has attended many an ALA convention, I would say anything goes… if you don’t dress like a bag lady, you’ll be the best-dressed woman there. ๐ I kid… sort of.
I guess I would have recommended flats.

June 25, 2012 at 2:33 pmOoo canteloupe would be good! very smooth. Strawberries have been on sale here this week. Icut and froze dozens and dozens of strawberries this past weekend for my smoothies in the morning. No more rotten strawberries for me! Saves so much money.
