Breakfast

Creamy, Peanut-Buttery, Almondy Oats!

Good Morning! I woke up early this morning to have something to eat before I go to a Bikram yoga class at 9:00 with my mom. I’m just going to let everything sweat on out because tomorrow really starts a new page in my life! No more nights at Roy’s (well except for the next couple Saturdays) and no more “culinary” school! I just love how I feel after Bikram yoga. All clean and “new”.

This morning I made a reallyyyy good, creamy bowl of oats. I used 1 cup of vanilla almond milk, 1/2 cup old fashioned oats and about a tbsp of peanut butter. The result was a creamy bowl of bliss. A little sweet and absolutely amazing! We are out of bananas so I had a small red crispy apple instead.

Hi girls! ok so I need help- my playlist is seriously uninspired as of late. What are your favourite songs to run/workout to? Right now my 2 favourites are (don’t laugh) Miley Cyrus- See You Again (I know she’s like 5 yrs old but I can’t help liking her lol) and Incubus- Anna Molly. The Incubus one is awesome, pounding beat and just angry enough ๐Ÿ™‚
SO what are your faves so I can steal them and revamp my playlist??

    Jenna,

Another good oatmeal combo is stirring in a container of yogurt into your cooked oats! I like to stir in vanilla yogurt and a bit of cinnamon.. it’s amazing!

With the new breakfast combination (as with hempmilk, I drink almond-milk everyday; and I love both bananas and apples, and eat THOSE everyday as well! haha!), and new classes/activities (can’t wait for your baking class to start!), you certainly ARE off to a fresh, new start! Embrace the change, and enjoy! :0)

    **Linds:

Have you heard the new song “Don’t Stop The Music” by Rihanna? Or “Take You There” by Sean Kingston? Those songs have INCREDIBLE beats – highly recommended! :0)

Just realized I should have posted this here-

Hey guys, random question- Iโ€™ve had the flu for the past 4 days and I have no appetite. Iโ€™m not eating too much, but Iโ€™m not really exercising (aside from a little abs) either since I sort of feel like Iโ€™ve been hit by a truck, haha. Should I be forcing myself to eat? And what effect will this have in my metabolism?

  • VeggieGirl
    February 17, 2008 at 2:55 pm

    **Becky:

I was in the same predicament recently (flu, no appetite, no energy) – the mere THOUGHT of eating was nauseating; however, I knew that I had to eat because otherwise my body would not be able to heal itself, and my metabolism would basically shut down (not good at all, since that would mean that your organs would start to shut down as well – you need to keep your body up and running!). I highly recommend Larabars, since theyโ€™re easy to eat and supply a good source of nutrients, high-quality fats/protein, and calories in a smaller amount (so, as I said, itโ€™s easier to eat). I also recommend bananas (easy to digest/eat; good for managing your potassium levels), oatmeal with nut-butters mixed in (another easy way to get a lot of nutrition into your body without having to eat a huge amount), and drinking a lot of fluids (especially water). This all helped me, and I was back to my healthy self in no time (it took four days to fully recover). Also be sure to get a LOT of rest – this was hard for me, since Iโ€™m very active, but I knew that I had to just tough it out, get enough nutrition, and let my body rest/heal.

Hope these tips are helpful!! Get well soon, Becky!

Jenna, I don’t know if you saw my question (so many comments!), but I was wondering if you had any snack ideas for me between breakfast/lunch that wasn’t fruit, a 1/2 a bar (i eat clif, lara and kind bars), or yogurt that was around 120 calories. Thank you!

Another quick question, what color agave nectar do you use? The lighter one or the amber?

    Have a great Sunday!! ๐Ÿ™‚

    Erica,
If you look under the FAQ secions at the top of the page, Jennas listed a whole bunch of snacks right around that calorie range. Most people say to try and incorporate fats, proteins, and carbs. You could have a cheese stick and fruit, or cheese and crackers. I love the laughing cow cheeses spread on either apples or crackers.
Or hummus, 2 Tbsp is usually about 50 cals, with crackers or vegies dipped in.

Thats what Ill usually have when I snack, Ive never really eaten bars or things like that, they dont really fill me up and feel I can usually eat more for the same amount of calories when I include fruits and vegies into my snacks. Hope hat helps, but check out the things Jenna lists too.

Linds: I love to work out to anything techno/rap/rock remixed. I have a whole slew of random remixes and the beat is so great! I especially the “Speedbreaker Remix” of Usher’s “Yeah” and Depeche Mode’s remix of “Tainted Love.”

I also like practically anything from Rihanna’s newest CD, and of course, old-school Michael Jackson.

I really want to try Bikram yoga! Right now, I’m taking a Pilates/Yoga fusion class at my gym (I’ve done Pilates before but never Yoga) and I love love love it so much! The best part is that it’s at 8:20 a.m., and it’s so nice to wake up to and get my day started with.

Also, I just wanted to share this recipe:
    http://www.recipezaar.com/150473

Vegan brownies! My sister and I made them last night and they were a hit! I don’t tell people that they’re vegan before the eat them, because I think it freaks them out. Although … these weren’t 100% vegan because I used real chocolate chips. Oh well.

    **Becky:

You can order Larabars from Amazon.com – that’s what I do to stock up :0)

    **Kay:

Ricemilk is okay, but it definitely has a watery consistency. Good for people who need to follow a gluten-free diet though, for sure, which is a plus. Has a good flavor as well. I still prefer almond-milk and hempmilk, personally, since those are my daily obsessions :0)

    Anne and Alex-

That’s so funny, we’re all in Arlington! I’m in Rosslyn (just a block from the metro). We should totally all meet up! Heck, we should go to Pizzeria Paradiso together sometime!

Anne, you said you work for a government contractor here, right? And Alex you’re in law school at GW? My boyfriend got his undergrad at GW – we’ve spent sooo much time in Foggy! I heart Froggy Bottom Pub! We always joke that between the two of us we’ve got all the DC schools covered (I’m a senior at American University and he’s currently in the part-time MBA program at Georgetown).

And you both live in Ballston? I love Ballston – you guys have a Panera super close to you! I love Panera.

Anywho, my e-mail is paula.chrin@gmail.com. I would definitely be up for getting together sometime! It would be fun!

Oh, and I also just saw that M.E. is from the DC area – is that correct? If so, you should totally join us if we do something!

here’s a great veggie burger recipe from _simply vegan_, which is a book of easy recipes, but pretty hit or miss as far as taste. this recipe is great. modify spices to your own tastes:

    2/3 C rolled oats
    2/3 C chopped walnuts
    1 large onion
    3 stalks celery
    2 carrots, grated
    1/4 wh. wh. pastry flour
    1/4 C water

(I add nutritional yeast, cumin, salt and pepper etc.)

mix together and season to taste. shape into 6 burgers and fry 10 minutes over medium-heat on each side until brown.

calories per burger: 156 protein: 6 gr. carb 16 gr. fat 9 gr. calcium 33 mg iron 1 mg sodium 27 mg fiber 3 gr

also, i wanted to throw some questions out there for discussion:
how much of a motivation to eat healthy is being thin? (i don’t mean healthy-thin, i mean fashionably thin)
in addition to being healthy, do you restrict quantities in order to maintain a certain weight? do you feel like you would be less interested in “health” if it didn’t facilitate a fashionable weight?
do you desire thinness, and if so, do you feel like it is an oppressive desire?

these are things I wonder about other women, and things that are hard to talk about, i think. so it’s easier digitally . . . be well today, all.

hey Jenna and everyone! I have a question about the Quorn cutlets.. I’m having one for dinner tonight, and I was wondering what you thought was the best way to cook it! one of my friends told me that they taste nasty if you cook them in the microwave, but I don’t want to use olive oil to cook it, so are there any other ways you could suggest without adding so many calories (olive oil)? could I just bake it plain or maybe use Pam non stick cooking spray? Thank you!!

  • Nicole
    February 17, 2008 at 5:42 pm

    Courtney –
Marinate it in terriyaki (or whatever marinade you like) for a little while during the day. Don’t have them plain, as they’re really quite bland, but they absorb flavors really readily, so marinades work well with them.

    February 17, 2008 at 6:13 pm

Shred, those were some really interested questions posed… It makes me think. If i hadn’t had an ED, then I really don’t think i’d be so interested in healthy eating. I mean, now that I’ve tried it and see that my body responds better when I fuel it with good healthy foods rather than processed junk, I would probably countinue to eat healthfully even if it didn’t have anything to do with weight. I don’t know though, if i would have tried it to begin with if it wasn’t tied to fashion and weight and stuff.
Right now, I’m kind of struggling w/gaining the weight that my doctors want me to. I mean, i’ve gained alot back (i lost 35-40 lbs, and i’ve gained back more than half). But anyway, I do restrict foods, even healthy ones, in order to not gain all that weight back. It’s not right, but I do it anyway. For instance, olive oil is good and healthy but i try to avoid it at all costs…
What about other people? especially those who have/had ED’s…

Alison, I completely understand what your saying about avoiding some foods, even healthy ones. I didnt loose as much weight as you did, but I lost about 25 pounds really quick. Ive gained some back, but like you am stuggling putting the last amount back on. I know things like olive oil, avacado, grains and things like taht are all healthy, but its still stuck in my head that I “cant” have them. Its part of the healing process and getting back to a normal eating routine. I think it comes in stages, because I have allowed myself a lot more freedom with foods, and Im sure you have too. I think it just takes time to really completely, if ever, get over an ED and restrictive eating. I think Ill always be really strict with the things I eat and what I put in my body, wether its five years from now or fifty. Just how I am I guess, good or bad. Everything will fall back into place for you when you are ready and want it, thas how I see things.

    Erica,

usually I do have 1/2 clif bar in between breakfast and lunch…its just so easy and it actually fills me up if I pair it with hot tea. You could also do trail mix…make your own with raw nuts and dried fruit. I love that! Sometimes all I need is an apple or an orange but when I’m really hungry I’ll either eat dry cereal or 1/2 bar. Try eating a more hearty breakfast though if you are “starving” in the morning!! Hope that helps a bit! Sorry for the delayed response!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

    Melissa,
I’ve always loved yoga…its a very deep practice for me and goes much further than just a good workout. I used to do it, though, just for the “workout” and found myself not as satisfied. When I really got into the practice and focused on meditating and my breathing it worked wonders and I became addicted. it’s helped me sleep, help me deal with stressful situations and just be a more compassionate person, i think. Its the only workout that exercises your body and your mind ๐Ÿ™‚
