Today I wanted to talk about packing a hospital bag! There may or may not be a fun giveaway at the end of this post so stay tuned {even if you’re not pregnant, you could still totally use this giveaway}.
I did research, spoke to friends and my doula, and this is what I came up with for my hospital bag. Sure, some of it’s probably unnecessary but I’ll at least be at the hospital for two nights {maybe longer if I need a c-section} so I wanted to bring a few comforts of home along for the ride. The second photo is what’s in baby’s bag…obviously. I also packed Adam a bag but his isn’t as exciting to post. Hah. We also have a huge snack bag!
So, going from left to right, here’s what in my bag:
Meyer’s Hand Soap for the bathroom in my hospital room. Not necessary but I saw someone did this and it seemed like a great idea! I love the basil scent.
Temple Spa Drift Away Spray for labor. I spray this on my pillow every night and it’s so calming and comforting. It’s a blend of different calming essential oils. I absolutely love it.
Inexpensive Robe from Target. I actually have the coral one.
My Favorite Target Nightgown for labor. I have a few of these – they really are the best! They’ve been all I’ve worn for pajamas this whole pregnancy (I sized up) because they are sooooo comfy. I’m planning to bring one to labor in that I don’t mind them cutting down the center for immediate skin to skin contact after birth.
Headphones so I can listen to my hypnobirthing sessions while in labor.
Boppy for breastfeeding. This was recommended by a few of my friends to bring along.
Lansinoh HPA Lanolin for sore/cracked nipples those first few days.
Nipple Shield for same reasons as above. I know there’s a lot of debate surrounding these but I don’t mind using one if I need it. Whatever gets the job done!
LANAcare Organic Wool Nursing Pads for comfort. I know milk doesn’t usually come in until the second or third day so I probably don’t need to bring this, but just in case. I have two sets of these and they are ridiculously soft and seem incredibly absorbent as well.
Going Home Dress from Target. Very soft and stretchy because I know I’ll still look about six months pregnant when I leave.
Comfy Old Pajama Pants {big size} for days laying in the hospital bed.
Victoria’s Secret Boyfriend Pants for same as above. I love these pants. They are oversized and so, so, so comfortable. Best sweatpants ever.
Peppermint and Lavender Essentials Oils for labor and any postpartum headaches.
Lip Balm. I’ve heard this is a MUST.
Baby Book. My friend Ruthie recommended this particular one and I love it! It’s adorable and I can’t wait to fill it all out.
Fuzzy Target Slippers. Always necessary. I recently got these on clearance for $5.
Fuzzy Target Socks. Also always necessary.
Not pictured are three nursing camis (I have these!), a soft stretchy skirt that I got on mega clearance from Gap and two soft cotton nursing bras.
Now for the baby bag!
Two Swaddle Blankets – I know they give you these at the hospital but I love the cute ones we have for him so I wanted to bring those!
Going Home Outfit
Soft Wool Booties to get those piggies warm
Mittens he doesn’t scratch himself {I believe the ones we have are from Carters}
It all fits so great in my Petunia Pickle Bottom Weekender Bag! This bag was a gift from my aunt and I LOVE it. It will be great for short trips and such since it’s so roomy. I love the cheery pattern as well!
I forgot to mention toiletries above. I fit all my toiletries in my Petunia Pickle Bottom Travel Train Case and Powder Room Case.
In there I have some travel sized shampoo/conditioner, dry shampoo, mouthwash, toothbrush, contact solution and rose water spray. The smaller powder room case will have my makeup.
Now for the giveaway! Petunia Pickle Bottom has generously offered to give away one travel train case and one powder room case in the above Champs Elysees Print to one lucky reader! These are great all purpose bags for travel. The train case is obviously large enough to fit all your toiletries and I find that the powder room case is absolutely perfect for makeup. I love both.

April 28, 2014 at 4:00 amAs a mom of two, you’re going to be very happy with the things you packed! I’d suggest some snacks, though, for your middle of the night feedings! I brought almonds, granola, and Kind bars. 🙂 A mama gets hungry, and I couldn’t handle the hospital snack choices!
jerrica
April 28, 2014 at 6:58 amAbsolutely! You both should pack plenty of snacks. It really isn’t fun having your husband run off to get food in those first hours/ days. Also, be careful with the socks. The floors are slippery and you do not need to fall and sprain your ankle immediately after giving birth…trust me!
Michelle
May 1, 2014 at 3:14 pmIndeed! I know she already said she had a huge snack bag, but OMG. I brought snacks, but it wasn’t nearly enough for my four day hospital stay (I had a c-section). Between suddenly not having heartburn anymore, having the full real estate of my stomach for the first time in months, breastfeeding, and recovery, the hospital meals were seriously skimpy and I found myself hungry around the clock.
Lori
May 2, 2014 at 2:15 pmI knew I was nearing transition when I started crying because I didn’t think we had enough snacks! Hahaha!

April 28, 2014 at 4:43 amWe have an upcoming Wedding to attend in Vermont- and I sure could use a travel bag that’s not from 1988:) Smart choices for your hospital stay- Preparation is the key!
You’re getting soooo close- Prayers for an easy brith and of course a healthy baby & Momma:)

April 28, 2014 at 4:44 amGreat list! Thanks for sharing. I LOVE those Victoria’s Secret boyfriend sweats. So ridiculously comfy. I found I ended up using my Boppy pillow to sit on (TMI ALERT). My lady parts did NOT love the feeling of a chair after pushing the baby out, so I put that fabulous cooling thing the nurses made in the center of the pillow and sat on that. Sweet, sweet relief.

April 28, 2014 at 5:12 amHi Jenna,
Having some trouble commenting on the giveaway site so I’ll leave it here. First, congratulations! I had my first child last June and it is a magical wonderful experience that I’m sure you’ll love. I used a long foldover skirt the most while I was at the hospital and my robe (same exact one as you). Good tip was to bring a headband for the after birth pic- my hair was a mess but the picture is something you’ll really want forever and the headband helped! Good luck!

April 28, 2014 at 5:29 amI’m not a robe person, but it was the most valuable item that I had with me in the hospital after I had my son. I stayed in my pjs for the first day and it was great, comfy protection while guests visited. I even had the same one from Target!
Enjoy the time with your new little family when he arrives!

April 28, 2014 at 5:45 amGreat post, Jenna! As a new mom myself (with another one on the way), I remember packing my hospital bag and wondering if I had everything. Looks like you do, and even if you don’t, the hospital has a ton of stuff and I’m sure you don’t live too far away. The only thing I can recommend is to bring your own pillows. Although I don’t remember sleeping much those first two days in the hospital (adrenaline/birthing high), I remember being super comfy with my pillows from home. Good luck!
Laura

April 28, 2014 at 5:45 amI know you said you already had your husband’s bag packed, but I wanted to throw in a little suggestion. I was very, very warm following delivery and kept the ac turned low. Thus, my husband was freezing! I would say throw in an extra hoodie and a couple extra pairs of socks for him. Best wishes!

April 28, 2014 at 6:24 amHello! Just a couple more tips on the items you already have… 1.) I covered my boppy with pillowcases for the hospital stay so that my actual cover was nice and clean when I got home. 2.) Nipple sheilds can be a lifesaver! 3.) I love your baby book – my sweet pea has the exact same one! I had it open and available when the nurse did her official footprints on the day she was born so she stamped the page in the book at the same time. Reading all of your posts is making me extra excited for round two this October! 🙂 Best of luck, enjoy that sweet babe.

April 28, 2014 at 6:36 amNever thought about the lip balm. Love the bags! So cute. I love all of Target’s stuff as well. My husband dreads when we go because the closest one is over an hour away and he has to drag me out.

April 28, 2014 at 6:52 amHighly recommend hydrogel pads for sore nipples. And a nursing bra (I like the sleep bras from Target.)

April 28, 2014 at 7:00 amI love that bag! But I don’t see that colour on the website anymore. 🙁 I’m having our baby next week, and have to completely change or packed bag. I was ready for a 4-hour stay at the birthing center after a natural birth, but now will be having a c section with a multi-day hospital stay.
colleen
April 28, 2014 at 7:01 amNot pregnant here – but picking up one of those sweet robes and some VS boyfriend pants, thanks! I really loved having pillow spray to relax, and the snack bag is genius – you don’t know if the kitchen will be closed at the hospital – but I’d also add some music or DVDs for long labor, if your hypnobirthing tapes won’t take you through.
Stefanie @ Sarcastic Cooking
April 28, 2014 at 7:01 amYou are as ready as you are gunna be! i looooved those little Gap zip up sleepers for my little guy!

April 28, 2014 at 7:14 amThis brings back memories of trying to pack my bag (my baby is almost 5 months old now). Looks like you’ve got it covered. One thing I wished I had brought more of were big roomy underwear and baggy sweats/pajama pants (that you don’t mind getting a little messy). Those first few hours and days are truly amazing. Excited for you!
Jessica
April 28, 2014 at 7:14 amDefinitely bookmarking this for my birth!
Pamela
April 28, 2014 at 7:15 amPretty bags! Bring your own pillows – you can never have enough and the hospital ones aren’t so comfy. Use bright/colored pillow cases so nobody mistakes them for hospital pillows 🙂
Lori
May 2, 2014 at 2:52 pmYes, bring a couple pillows!
mrsblocko
April 28, 2014 at 7:16 amSomeone mentioned being careful about your socks. I second that. Wear the hospital socks with the grippy bottoms, esp if they have you walking around during labor. The last thing you want to think about is traction when you’re having a contraction!
Stacy
April 28, 2014 at 7:16 amLove this! My son was born almost seven months ago and I see many familiar items that I packed!

April 28, 2014 at 7:16 amI just discovered Petunia Pickle Bottom bags and am obsessed! These cases would definitely help organize all of my random toiletries!

April 28, 2014 at 7:20 amI’m looking for a good weekender bag! Thanks for the info!

April 28, 2014 at 7:35 amFYI – They usually give little samples of the lanolin at the hospital. The size is so convenient to have many lying around your house when you are home. Don’t leave the hospital without snagging a few!

April 28, 2014 at 7:45 amI totally did the fragrant hand soap thing when I had my daughter! I am very sensitive to smells and there is nothing worse than that awful harsh hospital hand soap. Actually your whole packing list is very familiar to what I did! You’re going to be amazing.

April 28, 2014 at 7:48 amI totally over-packed for the hospital, but you just never know what you will want or need. My best advice for successful breastfeeding is to nurse as early and as frequently as possible. You will do wonderfully!

April 28, 2014 at 8:36 amLove the travel train case! My hard sided train case isn’t good for travel. I also love the subtle print. Some (cough, VB, cough) are too busy for me.

April 28, 2014 at 8:39 amYou’ve got your bases covered! Hubby and I brought a a little box of wine for our post-labor celebratory dinner! Which the hospital forgot to bring us. Cold cut sandwiches just weren’t the same as a steak!

April 28, 2014 at 8:40 amGreat list Jenna. You are more than prepared for your little one to arrive!

April 28, 2014 at 8:40 amLove this bag! Great idea of taking the soap…I wish I would have thought of that for my husband when he was in the hospital last year!

April 28, 2014 at 8:40 amThat bag looks great! Good luck with your delivery and hope everything goes smoothly.
Sarah
April 28, 2014 at 8:41 amJenna if I can add to your bag, bring a big reuseable water bottle. The cups at the hospital are sooooo small and you will be super thirsty during labor and after. Bring one for Adam too. This way you don’t need to have him get up every hour to get more water.

Jamie
April 28, 2014 at 8:51 amVery exciting! I agree on the makeup! I brought it and definitely used it. It was nice to feel like myself in the hospital :). Definitely not something you need to bring to the hospital, but in addition to Lanolin cream, I loved the Motherlove nipple cream! It was slightly smoother than lanolin so it went on a bit easier (but both are great). Congrats!
Katie
April 28, 2014 at 8:52 amAlways good to be over prepared. I think I ended up only using a couple things I packed, the hospital has most everything else. I was really happy to have packed some FRIENDS DVDs to enjoy during labor. Also, I second bringing some snacks/drinks if your hospital doesn’t have a snack room for parents (my husband frequented the free snack room a lot between meals!) Nipple shields saved my sanity and helped my daughter breastfeed like a champ the first month and weaned off it smoothly. Even if you were completely unprepared when you have your little guy, you’ll be so in love you won’t care. 🙂
Rachel
April 28, 2014 at 8:52 amI love all the research and thought you’ve put into this, every step of the way. While I don’t have any littles yet, this information is sure to come in handy when I do!

Alison
April 28, 2014 at 10:41 amThe bag looks great and very well prepared. I also have a suggestion – cooling gel pads for your nipples. It will make all the difference in breastfeeding and lanolin can promote yeast growth for both you and your little one. They have them at Target. I put the link at the bottom. I used them for my last two kiddos and it was a completely different breastfeeding experience than with my first two. Someone else may have already suggested them. I didn’t read the comments. Sorry if this is a repeat.

April 28, 2014 at 10:54 amGood luck! I have 3 kids (4 and 18 month old twins). I am not having anymore, but I do miss being pregnant.
Jessica
April 28, 2014 at 10:55 amI nursed my first baby until the day her baby sister was born (26 months) and I’m 4 months in on the new baby. I used a shield with my first because that’s what the hospital gave me. The second time around I am not using one. My piece of advice on that is that even though it helps with the pain, at some point you will stop using it (a hard habit to break, I might add) and you will still experience the pain. Just in case you didn’t know. 🙂
Amanda
April 28, 2014 at 10:55 amThanks for the great giveaway! I have the same Baby Book for my daughter and love it!

April 28, 2014 at 12:06 pmHere’s my list of Unsolicited New Baby Advice (things that I wish someone would have told me before baby #1 & 2!) – http://www.getsnazzy.com/2011/09/baby/ p.s. Peppermint essential oil can decrease milk supply, so use it sparingly. Strange – TMI tip – if you put a drop or two of peppermint oil in the toilet (or on your stomach) it can help you go to the restroom (which they will make you do before you leave) Fennel essential oil can help boost milk supply. Lavender is awesome for so many things! Happy almost baby!

April 28, 2014 at 12:35 pmYour bag is well-stocked! Just an idea: a favorite book and DVD. I was in labor with my first baby for 20 hours, and found reading one of my old favorites was really comforting in the first stages of labor. I was induced with my second baby, and it helped to have something else to focus on while we killed time at the very beginning. Best of luck!
Hayley
April 28, 2014 at 12:36 pmLove the weekender bag and the ppb bags!

April 28, 2014 at 12:57 pmCongrats again on your baby! If you find you are not a huge fan on the nipple cream you use (both my boys would not nurse if I used it even if I wiped it off) I found Natural Nipple Butter by Earth Mama Angel Baby. It is amazing!
Kelly
April 28, 2014 at 12:57 pmI love your packed bags! They are almost identical to what I packed for myself and my daughter when she was born almost a year ago (May 24th). I loved having our bags packed and couldn’t wait to use the swaddles for her. The nurses loved that I brought her Aiden and Anais swaddles and reminded me to pull the out for her. Plus they make photos a little cuter!
Kat
April 28, 2014 at 12:57 pmYou’re going to get a lot of use of that boppy the first 6 months!!

April 28, 2014 at 1:13 pmI am due in July! You might want to look into using peppermint essential oil if you are planning on breast feeding. I am an essential oil fan and I read it can decrease your milk production. Just a little FYI!!!

April 28, 2014 at 1:49 pmIt looks like you are more than set! Best wishes. I birthed at home with my two and didn’t pack any special bags. The My Breast Friend pillow is also helpful and those swaddle blankets are the best.

April 28, 2014 at 2:00 pmI wish I would have paid more attention to the clothes I packed to wear while in the hospital – I didn’t factor in the large number of visitors we ended up with and wish I would have thrown in a few things that were comfortable but still a little bit cute! Although, let’s be real – they aren’t there to see the new mom, they are only there to see the adorable baby! 😛 Good luck!

April 28, 2014 at 2:58 pmOnly thing I’d add is a blanket or throw from home. I brought one with me for my first and plan to do so with my second. It was something familiar and nice to snuggle under with your new little one. Much better than the hospital bedding.

Your hospital bag sounds well prepared, I brought a lot of similar stuff (and actually didn’t touch half of it, the time in the hospital flew by, but was happy and calm knowing I had it!)

Initially I was due about a week before you. however, we’ve had 2 miscarriages and im now 11 weeks pregnant (a third time). im having a really hard time staying positivie because i feel like it could be taken away at any minute.
It makes me so happy to see everything you are doing and how excited you are to welcome your litle guy! It makes me really happy too!

April 28, 2014 at 4:52 pmWow, I’m impressed! I thought I was so prepared when I went to the hospital with my first son…only to realize the going home outfit I packed was wayyyy too big. I didn’t even know they made “newborn” sizes. I brought along a 0-3 month cuddly little one piece outfit and it was ENORMOUS–especially since he was only 5 ½ lbs when we left the hospital!! LOL!

April 28, 2014 at 5:34 pmHi Jenna! I wanted to comment on the nipple shields — I used these as protection between my bra and breast — I found that the sensitivity of the nipples pressing on the fabric (or nursing pad) was unbearable for the first couple of months of nursing, and these helped me a lot. Neither of my babies actually nursed with the nipple shields on — for me they were more trouble than they were worth.
Also, I hope you’re applying the Lansinoh lanolin NOW…twice a day. It will toughen you up a bit and you’ll need it! This tip saved my life. I nursed two babies without cracking — but not without pain. Sometimes it really hurts. You really have to trust your instincts and no matter what, don’t give up!
So excited for you!
Lori
May 2, 2014 at 3:05 pmJust so moms-to-be that plan on nursing know, it is not painful for everyone. It seems that no matter where or what you read, pain is the common theme. I just thougth it was a given. Much to my surprise, I didn’t experience any! Just a little peeling in the beginning. I had Mother Love cream to use, but didn’t even use half the jar. I have heard people say that they hear it tends to not hurt for women with dark nipples, but, mine are not dark… sooo…. Everyone is different! Don’t be scared!
Angela
April 28, 2014 at 5:35 pmI can’t believe how fast it seems like your pregnancy went by! I’m sure it doesn’t really feel like that though.
Sara
April 28, 2014 at 5:40 pmI’m due at the end of July with my third (my third girl!) My go-to to always bring is a good, easy, mindless read (I’m ALWAYS induced, so I have long labors and insomnia at the hospital) and several bottles of my favorite juice for after labor. And yes, you will look 6 months pregnant when you come home! Bring stretchy clothes. Good Luck.

April 28, 2014 at 6:04 pmFirst of all – congrats!! Not long to go now!
I just had a baby a few months ago and I think you’ve got everything covered for your bag. Just wondering if you were packing more than just the two onesies for baby though? Only asking because I found my boy needed 2-3 changes a day when he was first born (lots of reflux lol)….

April 28, 2014 at 6:44 pmThe bags look very nice. It would be great have for a quick weekend or just overnight getaway. I love those. Quick question though…where do you get your essential oils from? I have been looking to purchase some but I am not sure where to get them.
Thank you 🙂

April 28, 2014 at 6:49 pmLooks like you got it covered! The lanolin is a lifesaver. Just keep applying it (and maybe even start now). Watch out for your clothes/pjs though bc its a very thick cream that may stain. Its the best though!!!
Maggie
April 28, 2014 at 6:51 pmHow exciting!! I definitely cannot wait until I can start packing my bag!

April 28, 2014 at 6:57 pmIt’s totally up to God, but my HOPE is that we will be pregnant again sometime this year and this bag would be just SO PERFECT for the hospital stay as well as some trips we have planned later anyway!

April 28, 2014 at 7:04 pmI love your post on pregnancy (and now hospital bag) tips. I was just thinking about ordering some rose spray from your 1st trimester post, as I’m in my 1st trimester right now, and I see its in your hospital bag too so it must be a keeper all throughout pregnancy!

April 28, 2014 at 7:49 pmDon’t forget a board game or something entertaining for you guys to do while waiting for the little man to make his debut. We played a TON of Scrabble while we were stuck in the hospital and it made things more fun. Good luck!!
Andrea
April 28, 2014 at 7:56 pmSeems like you have just about everything…I’d add snacks though and something to do, like cards or a game…even if you’re planning on laboring at home as much as possible (like I was), your water may break without labor really starting for another 10-12 hours and you’ll find yourself at the hospital with nothing to do!
Laura
April 28, 2014 at 7:57 pmGood luck! Can’t wait to see pictures of your baby boy.

April 28, 2014 at 8:54 pmBeautiful and well made items! Good luck with the baby!!!!
One thing I might also suggest, that we did for both of our little blessings was have a large container of yummy chocolates & candies available constantly for all the people that helped do everything (i.e. nurses, doctors, janitors, cafeteria/meal delivery people). It made all of those people who worked so hard to make me (and my hubby, and our babies) comfortable, feel appreciated. I think they also might have been a little extra nice to us as well, knowing that we not only said we appreciated them, but had a little token, to tangibly show our gratitude as well. Just a thought! 🙂
Amanda
April 28, 2014 at 8:57 pmGreat ideas! I still have a couple weeks to go so I think I’ll go shopping to pick some of these items up!

April 29, 2014 at 2:48 amSo happy for you! I’m not yet ready for kids…still traveling the world! I’m really working hard to reduce my impact and fit all my possessions into one bag. The cases would help a lot with organization, and then maybe one day for settling down with a family as well! The best of wishes for your coming months. April 29, 2014 at 10:46 ammy favorite tip I received: use your colostrum (while you have it) instead of the lansinoh. smear it all over your nipples (sorry I just wrote that) after a feed. it tastes better than lansinoh to the baby (and is organic/resourceful). =P and most hospital baby shirts have the fold over sleeves (if you want to avoid losing those mittens in your bed linens). =) happy laboring!

April 30, 2014 at 2:01 pmI have a PPB bag and love it! You’ll love yours!
With the mittens, keep in mind that babies need their hands to breastfeed, especially when they’re still learning in those first 3 months or so. Best for Babes explains it here: https://www.bestforbabes.org/science-you-can-use-why-do-my-babys-hands-always-get-in-the-way/
Someone (the LC I think?) told me to clip my babies nails while he’s nursing. I’d get him latched on, get relaxed, and then my husband could grab a little hand and nip his nails real quick. He still scratched his face some (their nails grow as quickly as the rest of them!), but it was worth it. 🙂

May 1, 2014 at 8:29 ami just had a baby 9 weeks ago and your bags look great! a couple things i learned- the mittens ALWAYS fall off! i ended up buying very small newborn socks and using them instead. also the washable nursing pads are great for the environment, but when my milk came in i was soaking through them four or five times a day and constantly washing them, also when you leak then the nipples are wet and it leads to increased soreness. i ended up going with disposables and my nipples were much happier after that, so was my laundry basket! hth! good luck!
Lana
May 1, 2014 at 8:58 amBring extra uUnderwear! Bring giant, old-lady, comfy, (preferably old!) underwear, bc chances are you will be in gauzey, see-through kind the first day or so, and there’s still a lot of heavy bleeding after you have your baby. Nothing worse than feeling like you have to worry about leaks in front of guests who will come to coo over your sweet bundle of joy. 🙂 Oh, and witch hazel. It does miraculous things.
Tania
May 1, 2014 at 3:14 pmGreat list, love all the comfy clothes! Don’t forget your snacks and hand cream. Bravado makes the most amazing nursing bras and tanks. Well worth the money. Good luck with the delivery. While I hope you get the delivery you dream of, ultimately I wish for a happy healthy baby above all else. All the best to you and Adam!
Kate
May 2, 2014 at 8:37 amLove this list! A friend also encouraged me to take extras of everything they offer you at the hospital, which was great advice! So exciting! And thanks for the giveaway!

May 3, 2014 at 12:35 amNice list! I had all these plans of what to pack, but then I didn’t get around to doing it on time because my baby came 10 days early! Good luck and best wishes to you all!
By the way – does that Drift Away actually come with a sprayer attached? Or did you decant it into a sprayer?
