shoppin’ the sales

Ashley introduced me to this blog and I have to say, I’m in lust. Actually, I haven’t stopped reading it since last night! J posts a new outfit every day and makes fashion easy for fashion-impaired bakers like me. She doesn’t post super expensive celebrity brands, but clothes from stores I actually shop at all the time like Banana Republic, Gap and Old Navy.

Each month, I set aside a clothes budget for myself and I love how J shows how to stretch your dollar and make good use of items you already have in your closet, like belts and cardigans. I already have so many new ideas from her!

Do you read fashion blogs? I know I’ve dabbled in some fashion posts before, but would it be something you’re interested in reading about if I include more in the future…like book reviews? It’s my goal to be a better bargain shopper (need to get better about that whole instant-gratification-paying-full-price deal..oops) so it might be fun if in the future I do some posts about how I stretch my “allowance” every month and new clothes I buy.

Thoughts?

Here’s what I picked up this month:

gold striped top from Forever 21 : $15.00

thick brown belt from Forever 21: $7.00

pendant necklace from Forever 21: $6.00

two skinny belts from Banana Republic sale: $50 (for both belts)

white blouse from Express on sale: $30

thick blue bracelet from Forever 21: $7.99

I think I was a pretty good lil’ shopper here! I was proud of myself for shopping the sales and finding some cute stuff at Forever 21, which I have a love/hate relationship with. Most of the time, that store is way too overwhelming for me but if I hunt hard enough (and bring snacks for fuel), I can sometimes find quality stuff and walk out with a whole outfit for under twenty bucks.

What’s your favorite store? I’m definitely a Banana Republic/Anthropologie fan.

I feel that way about Forever 21. I get way too overwhelmed. Plus, at almost 31, I’m scared that I’m too old for that store! I have to say, I love Bloomindgales. Probably the NYer in me, but they do have some good sales!

I’ve decided against buying any more F21 jewelry. The fake metal wears off green or chips and just looks as cheap as it actually was. 🙁

    July 18, 2011 at 12:27 pm

My technique for making F21 far less overwhelming is to shop online first, then go to the store, find what you’ve been looking at, and try it on. This is actually my technique for most shopping. 🙂

I would definitely be interested in a fashion section on ELR! Every time you post photos of yourself or your rare fashion posts, I think about how I love your style. I think it would be a hit here.

i, too, love anthropologie, zara, and banana republic. honestly, a huge % of my wardrobe comes from Goodwill/Salvation Army. The tricks are: 1) Don’t buy JUST based on brand name, 2) Don’t buy it b/c it’s cheap, buy b/c you love it (a good rule for any store), 3) Don’t expect to buy your “basics” here, and 4) Shop in the wealthy parts of town

I’ve found lots of patagonia, anthropologie, banana republic at second hand stores — it’s great if you don’t mind wearing something from last season.

    try outlet malls, too!

I actually have a hard time buying anything other than from forever 21 because it’s always in the back of my mind as having the cheapest prices, and I can always find something I like. Fortunately there isn’t one within 2 hours from me, so it makes me hold off from shopping in expensive boutiques around me, yet I only get to go a couple times a year. Granted I tend to go a bit crazy but it’s kind of fun that way.

Lol. whenever I go to San Diego, I shop on Garnet Ave in PB and frequent Pink Zone. Cheap, fun, comfortable clothes that I wear practically everyday. I also like Forever 21 but the crowd, music and atmosphere give me a headache. I can only be in there for so long. I know a few ladies who shop at Anthropologie and they are always so stylish, but it’s too expensive for me.

I feel the same way with Forever 21!! You need time in that store for sure! I have come out with some great finds, and I find the easiest thing is to just try everything on. If you like it even a little, try it on as it usually appears different!!

    YES, more fashion, moreeeee!!!

    American brands:
H&M is my <3. I adore it so. Their new eco-friendly line is gorgeous and they have such awesome dresses, especially in the summer.
Anthropologie is ridiculously awesome, if only I could afford it more often. I love how unique everything is there. Their wedding dresses are so amazing.
    Banana Republic, of course.
J Crew, but mainly their wedding dresses. There is one I want soooo badly, but the price tag stumps me.

    Canadian brands:
Le Chateau – they have up market stuff but every so often, their sales rock. Like for instance on the weekend, I got 3 tops and a pair of shoes for $89 and regular price it would have been $500 altogether!

    2. thrift stores for antique and cute dishes and blogging related trinkets for food photography

And gift certificates to Anthro are always welcome 🙂

I’m in total agreement on Forever 21. It looks like a tween’s closet exploded half of the time and I usually want to run out screaming. The only tolerable store I’ve been to was the Mall of America Forever 21. Designed and merchandised MUCH better. And things were in order. Miracles! But yes, you do find some treasures there sometimes!

A big YES on the fashion posts! I started reading a few fashion blogs, in addition to yours, to get inspiration on how to maximize items I already own. It’s a great concept and a HUGE way to save $$$ while still getting the new outfit feel. You inspire me to play around with my cooking, I know you’d do the same with fashion 🙂 I really like how you broke down each item with the price – maybe you can put together an outfit with your new buys and post it too?!

I just found that blog too! I love it. My favorite stores are H&M and Forever 21. I love that white shirt from Express, so cute! I love Express but some of their stuff can be expensive. When I was 15 I was shopping with my guy friend in Express and picked up a shirt without looking at the price & bought it. This shirt turned out to be $50 bucks and I totally freaked out inside my head. I didnt want to look like an idiot so I bought the shirt & left. I literally walked two feet out of the store with my guy friend and told him “You need to return this for me.” I was way too embarrassed to walk back in and return it myself so two minutes after I bought the shirt I sent my friend in to return it and get my money back.

Forever 21 has great sales, but EVERYTHING CHANGES WHEN YOU WASH IT. Never dry anything from that store and even washing it can be scary. From my last match I had something stretch out in the wash (how did that happen…) and a long boyfriend style sweater become a crop top. 🙂

Ahh Anthropologie definitely has my heart. Unfortunately my wallet isn’t quite so enamored with it, so I do a lot of shopping at Banana Republic, Old Navy and sometimes Target. I am a high school student so Forever 21 and HM are a staple in my wardrobe. But I also love to get funky stuff from thrift shops. Some of the clothes there are actually pretty high end and are affordable! If I could splurge I would definitely hit up J.Crew and Club Monaco as well as TopShop.

Who doesn’t have a love/hate relationship with XXI!? 🙂 I’m actually in a weird spot right now where (as far as going out attire) I feel like I’m too old for XXI and Urban Outfitters but too young for Banana and J Crew. 28 is tough!

I would love to see fashion posts. You are quite the fashionista yourself! I am always envious of the looks you put together.

In other news, I feel like I need to sit you down and discuss some of the ratings you gave books on GoodReads. I think that website is turning me into a creeper because I am just looking at friends virtual shelves and snooping around to see what they thought about books I loved. While at the same time I think we are literary soulmates….too far?

Yes! I would love if you posted outfits…I love that kinda thing. I like the same places you do and sometimes its depressing seeing the girls in other blogs posting from such expensive stores and brands. Good Idea 🙂

I love that you focused on J’s Everyday Fashion!! I love her blog and get it in Facebook as well. Sometimes all it takes is one great accesory to give an outfit that needed pop. I love the gold top!

I’m completely addicted to Anthropologie but it usually stretches my budget – lately I’ve gotten into finding less-expensive alternatives at Francesca’s Collections and even Forever 21. Also love Banana and Express for work/professional attire and they have great sales.

Not a Forever 21 fan, I have to say. I used to love H&M (and still do sometimes, especially for weekend things), but I’m not cool with buying clothing that easily stretches out, tears, or generally looks wrong after a couple washings.

I’m definitely a sale girl, and I find really good sales on Bloomingdale’s, Bluefly, Piper Lime, etc. I’ve also found a couple really cute summery sundresses on Victoria’s Secret lately, and they’re not bad price-wise…around $60.

I could totally use some fashion tips… I’m pretty boring and often wear the same comfy dresses everyday!

I LOVE Target for dresses, Express for dress pants, Limited for tops! Old Navy is usally ‘hit or miss’ for me!

I read a few choice beautiful fashion blogs 🙂 I like your style and I’d love to see more in the future, although to be honest, my love/hate relationship with F21 is pretty much just hate, so if you love them, maybe not 😉 My favorite stores are definitely j. crew, and anywhere that sells seven for all mankind jeans (which I’ve even found at thrift stores!).

I know the “formula” for the “ideal” (whatever these things are 🙂 ) wardrobe dictates that you splurge on classic items that are good quality and buy trends from cheap places like F21 (since the trend won’t last long, the item doesn’t need to either), and I lived by that for several years. And although this seems reasonable, I’m not a fan of generally buying cheap, throw-away clothes. They only last a few washings, and the damage they cause to the environment just doesn’t seem worth it. So while I fully support “deals” (proudest moment of my life: marc jacobs skirt for $4 at goodwill), I think it’s good to keep in mind that some things aren’t worth purchasing, even if they are really cheap (I’ve bought way too many tank tops because they were “Like $2” at old navy). It’s one thing to purchase as much as you can, and quite another to build a wardrobe of beautiful clothes that make you feel fabulous. They can overlap, but in my life, sometimes they don’t, and that’s okay 🙂

I just broke a 3-year shopping fast and hit the Anne Taylor LOFT outlet in Northern VA. I’m in love with that store!

I love the white blouse, especially with the bracelet or pendant. Cute!
