Winning Combinations

Good morning everyone!

Last night in school was SO fun! It was “sauce night” and we played around with different flavor combinations. Nothing is too crazy or out of limit….we could do whatever we wanted! My partner, Jack, and I created a raspberry-basil coulis, a thai tea creme anglaise, a blueberry maple caramel sauce and an earl gray chocolate sauce. The winner? The raspberry-basil!! Our chef instructor loved it and I couldn’t keep my tasting spoon out of it! We made a basic raspberry sauce but added basil and pureed the basil in with it at the end for a very summery, fresh sauce that would be perfect on vanilla ice cream. mmmm!

This morning I woke up 15 minutes later than I usually do but was all set to go to the gym. I’m just starting to feel like my old self again after getting so sick last weekend and my body is craving exercise! My workout was pretty quick because I woke up late, and I didn’t even get a chance to eat a snack before I was out the door. I did gulp down some orange juice though. At the gym I warmed up briefly on the treadmill, did upper body weights for about 20 minutes then finished with 12 minutes on the elliptical machine.

When I got back I tried this new cereal I “borrowed” from my parent’s pantry:

It was actually really good! We will see how filling it is but the taste was yummy and I liked how there were whole freeze dried blueberries in it.

My day is going to be very hectic, I’m afraid. I’m training a new girl today at Roy’s and she is coming at 11 so I really have no idea when I will get a chance to eat lunch. I might take little bites all throughout the afternoon. I packed the last of my chicken into a bagel sandwich with honey mustard, provolone cheese and lettuce. I also packed a container of grapes and a yogurt and some watermelon for a snack later.

Hi everyone. I am tea newbie and getting sick of black tea and am looking for some flavor suggestions. I was thinking of buying some of the celestial seasons herbal tea (some of those holiday ones look good, although I realize probably not sold in the summer), but my mom who loves tea said she hates herbal tea and it taste very different than regular tea. I was wondering what all your thoughts were.

Also, there is always so much tea left in the bags. I hate throwing them- do you all save tea bags when you are at home and reuse them? I tried but it got so dusty.

And for both coffee and tea drinkers how do you all prevent your teeth from getting stained. I’d rather not whiten them. Sorry for such a long post and a million questions- new to this whole caffeine thing!

(I posted this on Kath’s wall tool, sorry for those of you who red both).

Jenna of course I would love to hear your fav teas.

I was home over the weekend as well and had my mom buy me the same cereal so I could try it. I’m trying to finish up what I had before I open it, but I’m glad to hear it tastes good!

I am so jealous! I’ve never even seen that new cereal… it’s not on the their website (or is it? Kashi never updates!) and not in the stores around here! I was in whole foods yesterday and it wasn’t there and now i really want to try it!

    Question:

I want to make muesli for breakfast tomorrow and have been googling it. I only have quick oats. Do I just put the oats in water and soak it overnight and that is muesli? no cooking? am i right?

    Amanda:

I am a total tea freak, and I also love coffee. My favorite brand of tea is REpublic of Tea. They have TONS of flavors. If you don’t like the taste of herbal, try decaf black. One of my favorites is ginger peach- they have regular and decaf.
I also love good earth tea and Market Spice (only available in teh northwest though).

Sadly, it does stain your teeth, not sure what to do about that. I just drink water after I drink tea or cofee and that seems to make it go away. It’s like a stain on clothes- the longer you let it sit there, the harder it is to get it out.

I save bags sometimes. Squeeze them out, put on a spoon, stick on a saucer and put on your counter. I never save longer than one day though so i’ve never had teh dust problem. I suppose you could try putting it in the fridge?

Tea is cheap and plentiful. I say just try a bunch and see what you like!

Jenna! Here is a re-post that got lost over the long weekend. i am very curious:

i think it is so awesome you are eating whatever you want. you are a great role model. my question is can you tell any difference in your body’s response to meat? hope you feel better.

oh, sorry I missed that one!

umm no I have not noticed any difference in my body at all since I started to eat meat. I only went without meat though for a few months so it wasn’t as drastic as if I started eating meat again after 15 years or something. Thanks for asking!! 🙂

Jenna, I haven’t seen this Kashi in my stores yet. Would you mind telling us its nutritional profile? I love Kashi cereals but some can be really caloric.

    Sarah,

This cereal has 200 calories and 3 grams of fat (I believe, I’m trying to remember) per cup. I found it to be quite filling and it held me over about 3 hours until I ate my early lunch. I would definitely buy it again!

Raspberry basil sauce sounds amazing. One of my favorite snacks is fresh strawberry halves wrapped in basil leaves. Sounds odd, but it’s yummy!
