world’s best grilled cheese sandwich

You wanna know the truth? Last weekend I was sorta a bad food blogger. There I was, in one of the greatest foodie cities ever, and silly ol’ me only took one darn food photo the entire time.

I’m sorry. Can you forgive me? Honestly, I was too busy drinking margaritas, getting my toes done, shopping and sucking barbecue sauce off my pinky finger. But isn’t that what a vacation is about? It felt marvelous.

However, let me offer you this photo of the best grilled cheese sandwich in the entire world. It hails from the Blue Star Cafe and it completely rocked my world. Since you weren’t there to enjoy it with me, let me describe it to you in all of it’s cheesy glory. Picture two perfectly toasted slices of thick sourdough bread (most likely drenched in butter, or at least one can hope), stuffed with melting swiss, provolone, cheddar and gorgonzola cheese. The sandwich is served alongside fruit chutney and tangy dijon mustard.

It’s worth every single last crumb and if you ever are in Austin, I highly recommend stopping. Heck, this grilled cheese is pretty much worth the cost of the flight alone.

Looks amazing! Grilled cheese is my favorite! It looks like they cut it into strips too…better for dipping into the mustard! Yum!

That sandwich looks amazing…but even better are the “sauces” I see to the side. I LOVE sauces to dip my sandwich bites into or even more heavenly, dipping sweet potato fries in (my fave!!).

This past week I have been on a sandwich kick! Picture this….toasted bread slathered in my special sauce (mayo based, of course), romaine lettuce, sliced tomato (sans seeds/mush :), carmelized onions & crispy hormone-free bacon!! Ohhh….heaven. I very much want to take a picture of it & blog it….but once it’s made, I simply can’t take the time. It must reach my mouth!! πŸ™‚

I feel like I’ve been seeing WAY too many pictures of melted cheese lately. I don’t think it’s helping my already existing obsession. Did you know that there’s a restaurant in Toronto dedicated solely to making different varieties of grilled cheese sandwiches? I saw it on the blog “The Great Balancing Act.” I was so jealous when I read about it. Melted cheese = love.

I’m not crazy about grilled cheese sandwiches (lactose-intolerant and cheese is a big trigger for me) but my boyfriend is crazy about grilled cheese sandwiches. I told him about this one and he’s all for it except he asked about the homemade ketchup. It’s from a restaurant in Montreal (Olive et Gourmando) that serves a grilled cheese with homemade ketchup and he was sold. Nothing has compared to that sandwich ever since.

Y’know I was thinking if one’s job is a blogger – then is there an expectation to produce consistently daily…?

And then I thought – it would have to be like every other job – there should be vacations and breaks.

And you should do what you want and feel in your heart.

Besides, photographing everything and having to stop and apply everything you see and do in life? That’s really NOT living in the moment.

..and thanks a lot – now I want to go to Austin for cheese. And bread. Melted.
