Happy Humpday!
Bleh, I feel exhausted right now and no amount of tea or coffee can help….
Last night I had a “2 a.m night”, which is how I fondly refer to those nights where my mind is racing so much that I don’t fall asleep until the wee hours of the morning. Unfortunately I’ve been plagued by this my entire life….I want to sleep…..but just cannot. Bah. I guess it didn’t help that I didn’t even attempt to sleep until midnight because I was up getting some writing done. September brings many interesting projects and last night I got a head start on two of them!
So anyways, I woke up a little less than enthusiastic this morning at 7:30. I made the breakfast of the week—2 packets instant oatmeal with bananas, berries and peanut butter
And now its time to go bake cupcakes for a couple hours! Wahooo!

August 26, 2009 at 8:26 amI had exactly the same thing! This night! Really… It’s so bad, when your mind just keeps going and falling asleep is not an option.
But baking cupcakes maybe helps to get you through this day;) Take care! xxx

August 26, 2009 at 8:35 amSorry about your night–at least you have cupcakes! What a fun job–you should just stay there and keep baking with them!
Amanda
August 26, 2009 at 8:38 amJenna,
How do you normally handle these situations? I had a similar night on Friday – my mind racing from work and stress. I ended up watching tv just trying to relax and to stop thinking about things :-/
Oh, and I agree with Allie Katie that you should stay and continue baking cupcakes 🙂

August 26, 2009 at 8:42 amBah, I’ve been having trouble sleeping lately too. I seem to have been waking up around 3 or 4 and feel wide awake (but I’m so not!). I’ve been exhausted! Here’s hoping tonight brings better rest for both of us! 🙂

August 26, 2009 at 8:43 ami’ve had those nights every day since sunday. it’s so frustrating. and then i start focusing on how my alarm is going off at 5:30 for yoga, and i want to be well rested – which only makes my mind race more.
at least you have some exciting things to look forward to! 🙂

August 26, 2009 at 8:45 amI hope you get to take a nap later on Jenna. Sleepless nights stink. Try to have a good day 🙂

August 26, 2009 at 8:48 amUgh. I had one of those nights on Sunday – not the best way to start Monday morning! I do exactly the same thing – just lie awake while my mind races about things even though I am desperate to sleep! Gah!
Oh well, at least you got started on some projects 🙂

August 26, 2009 at 8:49 amWhat a cute mug!
I’m missing oatmeal but it’s been so hot lately!

August 26, 2009 at 8:59 amGosh i hate those type of nights when there is just so much on your mind. Its so annoying at times. Congrats on getting a head start of 2 of your projects! thats always a plus! 🙂

August 26, 2009 at 9:00 amI hate nights like that! I hope you feel better, and that the exhaustion will help you sleep well tonight!

August 26, 2009 at 9:04 amAw, that’s the worst. I hate not being able to sleep when I need it! Take care and have fun with the cupcakes!

August 26, 2009 at 9:04 amBoo, sorry you couldn’t sleep. That happens to me when I miss my “window of opprotunity” to sleep and it majorly sucks. Hope you feel better soon.

August 26, 2009 at 9:09 amI am reading a really good (inspiring) book at the moment about the Rwandan Genocide .. . unfortunately I read it right before bed last night and had semi-sleep, where I drift in and out and have dreams that feel like they’re really happening (thankfully not nightmares). I know you have work to do, but would it help turning in a little early and reading a book instead of looking at the screen? How’s the foot? Have fun in cupcake land!! 🙂
Allie
August 26, 2009 at 9:22 amugh, unfortunately i have had a few nights like that lately as well with a lot to think about. any suggestions on what to do?
Pam (Highway to Health)
August 26, 2009 at 9:23 amOh those nights are tough! I usually try to get to bed early after a night like that..

August 26, 2009 at 9:27 amYikes! Sounds like you might need a nap this afternoon! Get some rest girl.
Cait (Cait's Plate)
August 26, 2009 at 9:30 amUgh. Jenna. I’m totally the same way. I find that if I keep a notebook by my bed it helps. Whether I just write it out, make lists, do some planning, etc. it always helps!
At least you get to go bake cupcakes! That’s not so bad right?? 🙂
Hope you have a good day and are able to wake up a bit!

August 26, 2009 at 9:42 amI like you have a very active mind. It is always running, I’m always thinking. Most nights I get to sleep pretty easily, but my dreams tend to be pretty wild. But I do have nights to where I can’t sleep and its not because I’m not tired, because I am, it’s because I can’t calm my mind. Sometimes I just write things down to get it out of my mind. Other times I try to meditate, clear my mind, and other times I’ll talk to God (most times this is successful)! Hope you have a wonderful day!
Sarah
August 26, 2009 at 9:43 amHopefully a sugar rush from frosting will wake you up! 🙂

August 26, 2009 at 10:09 amI definitely have those nights when my brain just won’t shut down and let me sleep. Hope you are still able to enjoy your day baking!

August 26, 2009 at 10:27 amI know exactly what you mean – those nights can be so frustrating! If I really, really can’t get to sleep on a night like that I’ll get up, put my light on, and do some writing. Sometimes to have my thoughts down on paper keeps them from running through my head. Hope you get a better night of rest tonight!
Sarah
August 26, 2009 at 10:27 amI’m so sorry to hear of your struggles with sleep. At least you have a fun day coming 🙂

August 26, 2009 at 10:39 amMy problem is waking up and not getting back to sleep. Fortunately it hasn’t been an issue recently, but a good 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle at 4am is never a bad option

August 26, 2009 at 10:52 amI couldn’t fall asleep last night either grrrr :/ def dragging today as well… hope you have a great day cupcake making!! at least you aren’t doing accounting like this girl, that should cheer you up 😉

August 26, 2009 at 11:04 amSorry to hear that you didnt get much sleep. I have the same problem. My mind seems to be running at 60 mph even though my body is ready for sleep.

August 26, 2009 at 11:06 amUgh, sorry about the sleepless night! I hate it when that happens- I always start worrying about not falling asleep, which then makes it even harder to do so… vicious cycle 🙁
Have fun with the cupcakes today!
Rebecca
August 26, 2009 at 11:09 amSorry you didn’t get a good night’s sleep! Have fun baking cupcakes!!

August 26, 2009 at 11:42 amThat sounds exactly like my night. I’m the same way. I have a difficult time sleeping quite often. Hopefully, we’ll both get some sleep soon.
Danielle
August 26, 2009 at 12:03 pmI hope that glorious breakfast keeps you going!
So sorry about the sleep trouble, I get into bouts like that and it’s the absolute worst. A few times I even couldn’t go to sleep until 5:30 at which point I just decided to stay awake out of fear of not waking up for class/work the next morning.
Happy cupcake making girlie 🙂
Kate
August 26, 2009 at 12:16 pmCupcakes will help. A lot.
I like to write everything in my head down on a piece of paper before I go to bed. I like sticky notes the best, so I can pick them up when I leave the house and turn them into my to-do list for the day. Then I can sleep soundly, not worrying about what I’m forgetting!
Ashley
August 26, 2009 at 12:33 pmi know just how you feel. i often fall asleep but then wake up at like 3am, mind racing, unable to sleep, wanting to do crazy things like go for a run, which obviously wouldn’t be safe, and i’m sure once i even stood up i’d realize i was too tired. I’m sleepy today from a dinner party last night, everyone left at 1:30am!

August 26, 2009 at 12:45 pmI have that same sleeping problem! Which is horrible when you have an 8 to 5 kind of job 🙁

August 26, 2009 at 1:20 pmI know exactly what you mean by 2am nights. I’ve heard it’s helpful to write down all your thoughts when your mind races like that. I havn’t tried it though. I usually just stick it out and try to focus on corpse pose and quieting my mind and body. Have fun baking cupcakes! Sounds like a blast!

August 26, 2009 at 1:46 pmYikes, I hate not being able to sleep! I know exactly how you feel, your mind is racing with everything being tired isn’t even a factor. Sometimes I take a magnesium supplement and that helps. Well have a great day baking cupcakes 🙂

August 26, 2009 at 3:16 pmWriting just before bed got your mind racing! When I was having trouble not sleeping because of a racing mind…my Dr gave me Lorazapam! It really helped to keep my mind from racing so I couyld sleep! Didn’t take it every night, just when I could tell my mind wasn’t stopping!
Katie Davis
August 26, 2009 at 3:28 pmI do that all the time as well. I think I have an overactive brain and sometimes I just can’t get it to shut off. And usually the more I think about wow it’s late I should be sleeping, the more I can’t sleep! Hopefully you aren’t dragging too bad today!

August 26, 2009 at 3:43 pmI am a terrible sleeper too. Since we moved, I have yet to sleep through the night and I’m starting to lose my mind. I’ve read that exposure to electronics can make it more difficult for the mind to go into sleep-mode and then you should turn off the tv/laptop at least 30minutes before bed. Not that I am ever able to follow that advice, but maybe working on your laptop at bedtime is what made it harder to go to sleep yesterday.

August 26, 2009 at 3:46 pmDoes it make it easier to bear that a lot of us suffer the same ailment? Busy minds make for impossible sleep!

August 26, 2009 at 3:54 pmHave you ever gotten your hormone levels checked out? I’m sure there are lots of causes of insomnia, but I know hyperthyroidism is one. Might be worth a try?
And definitely, melatonin helps me tons! That paired with valerian is like sleep’s best friend with no hangover the next day.
Hope being in a stimulating environment will perk you up a bit!

August 26, 2009 at 4:15 pmi had a restless night as well but it was caused by a Tstorm… so I just took some benadryl because that always works

August 26, 2009 at 5:21 pmI have the same problem…sometimes the mind just get racing too quickly! Hope your day goes fast Jenna.

August 26, 2009 at 5:54 pmAt least you’re on a semi-vacay, right? Hope you get some rest tonight, after the cupacake extravaganza! Not sleeping definitely changes my entire mood, so it’s understandable that you’re feeling a little blah.
Hope you have a great rest of your day!

August 26, 2009 at 6:16 pmI had a 1:30am night last night. I know exactly how you feel! Hopefully you had a good day baking cupcakes.. your pictures the other day looked like you were having a great time!

August 26, 2009 at 6:17 pmI hate those nights. I always end up getting up to eat something or go on my computer.

August 26, 2009 at 6:26 pmI have the same sleep issues. Sometimes, in times of great desperation, I’ll pop a Tylenol PM. It works for me but only if I have enough time for 8 undisturbed hours.

August 26, 2009 at 6:40 pmThat totally stinks. The best thing I have found is warm milk and cinnamon toast. : )

August 26, 2009 at 6:51 pmMy insomnia tip is to just not look at the clock. It’s very tempting, but only perpetuates the cycle. Close your eyes, but pretend you can only “look” at one spot in the blackness (if that makes sense). Also, I find that making to-do lists, etc. right before bed can make it worse, so try to do it earlier. Hope that helps! (PS – That colorful bowl of oats gets me every time.)
Pam
August 26, 2009 at 7:32 pmAH! I haven’t been sleeping well either. At least you get to wake up and bake cupcakes! I get to wake up and…work at a bank! Not so good.
