Last night we ate a lot of meat.

All y’all from this area know exactly what I’m talking about here.
And if you’re not from Texas, you might be better off not knowing.

I’m honestly not quite sure what’s so good about The Salt Lick, although I think the sauce has something to do with it. It’s slightly sweet, slightly spicy and so good I could drink it straight out of a sippy cup. No joke.

Please don’t judge me for the below photographs. One taste of a pork rib from The Salt Lick and I turned into a wild beast, attacking my prey with ferocity.

Like I said, I don’t even know who I am anymore. Can somebody please put me on a plane back to California right now and stick a carrot stick in my mouth? Okay thanks.

September 11, 2010 at 6:27 amOh hun, I’m from San Antonio but grew up basically in Austin as my grandparents lived there.
You are always, always a changed woman when you experience Salt Lick! It is basically the purest form of a drug 🙂 We all turn into beasts when Salt Lick sauce covers those ribs! Enjoy your time…Tx is a special place!
Natalia @asideofsimple
September 11, 2010 at 6:39 amOh Jenna, I can’t tell you how much I’m enjoying your posts these days. I love the succession of your “eating” photos. You can practically hear your thouhts, pondering your method of attack! Classic.

September 11, 2010 at 6:44 amLooks to me like you’re becoming a real Texan! Despite the fact that I can’t actually appreciate all the meat, I really like these photos, especially of the beer and the sauce….and you attacking you’re food, of course! 😉

September 11, 2010 at 6:50 amIt’s crazy how much fun TX is and how you can totally get into the food culture! I didn’t get the whole “Texas is like another country” thing till I moved here. Now I feel like an ex-pat but it’s just so GREAT.

September 11, 2010 at 6:53 amI haven’t had ribs in forevah! Looks so delicious.
The carrots stick will be waiting when you return.

September 11, 2010 at 7:14 amSippy cup. Oh I could drink a lot of non-beverages in a sippy cup. I’ve never been to Texas….I’ve never really wanted to until NOW! I can’t wait to visit Texas now ha!
Anna
September 11, 2010 at 7:17 amhahaha I LOVE these pics of you attacking your dinner. I’m studying in Spain right now and the one thing I miss for some odd reason in BBQ sauce. I’m not a meat-eater but even I miss a good veggie burger with BBQ…or anything with BBQ! Atta girl.

September 11, 2010 at 7:29 amI love love love Salt Lick. I dream of it all the time. My parents like 15 minutes from it and we frequented it after church on Sundays. I’ve been trying to re-create their BBQ sauce (so hard to do), but I just miss it so much in Rhode Island. I made a pretty close batch this past weekend but never the same.

September 11, 2010 at 7:29 amThis is like a vegetarian’s worst nightmare!

September 11, 2010 at 7:33 amYum! I love BBQ. You did a good job of not getting the sauce all over your face. Nice work!

September 11, 2010 at 8:02 amwow, you stayed pretty clean while eating ribs! i make such a mess. when i’m craving ribs, i just make my hubby go get some from our local bbq place and bring ’em home! *lol*
Tiffany (Stuffed With Fluff)
September 11, 2010 at 8:28 amI am impressed. There’s absolutely NO WAY i could eat all those ribs and not make a huge mess on my face/hands/clothes.
Sarah @ The Smart Kitchen
September 11, 2010 at 8:36 amI was the same way with those ribs.
And the sauce. I’m pretty sure it’s the anchovies in it. That’s the secret.

September 11, 2010 at 8:37 amTHE SALT LICK! The last time we were in Texas, I could not get enough of this place! I love it!

September 11, 2010 at 8:49 amThat is a lot of meat, you were not kidding! The sauce must have somethign very special in, hehe! Green drinks, lemon water, and carrots sticks coming your way, right!? lol 🙂 You are having a ball it looks like!

September 11, 2010 at 8:52 amI believe they have something similar in Fort Worth that I went to around 10 years ago and I just LOVED it! A whole lotta meat! Looks delicious and it looks like you enjoyed your ribs with that bone sucking sauce:)

September 11, 2010 at 9:06 amAn hour and a half? I don’t know if I have ever stayed in a restaurant that long! Lol, love the sign.
Although, I can’t STAND meat. So I don’t think I’ll be traveling down South anytime soon!

September 11, 2010 at 9:25 am1. I’m not from Texas, but I am from Oklahoma.
2. I have not always been a vegetarian. In fact, until about 6 months ago, I was the POLAR OPPOSITE.
What I’m saying is this…………I feel you dawg.

September 11, 2010 at 9:30 amI actually have a jar of that sauce in my pantry… might actually have to try it.

September 11, 2010 at 10:34 amAh! Love BBQ! I’m a Texan at heart (born and raised!) and I’m always telling people that if I wasn’t from Texas I’d probably be a vegetarian! Ha! It’d just be too hard when I went home to visit to stay away from meat!!

September 11, 2010 at 10:42 amNo judgment here! I love a good BBQ.

September 11, 2010 at 11:03 amI love the BYOB aspect of Salt Lick…and the grounds are so chill. Driftwood, Texas, has its perks!
I wish y’all would go float the river while you’re there! Don’s Fish Camp in San Marcos is a fun time, albeit a little rustic.
Jess
September 11, 2010 at 11:16 amSalt Lick is the best bbq on Earth. Good thing you got Rudy’s before Salt Lick because it would have been a let-down afterwards.
hippierunner
September 11, 2010 at 11:18 amLOL to the last part of what you said. To be honest, I can’t wait til you get back to California and eat some carrots (or any veggies!). Simply because that’s what I always enjoyed seeing on your blog, Jenna! Glad you’re having so much fun though!
Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga)
September 11, 2010 at 11:33 am“. Can somebody please put me on a plane back to California right now and stick a carrot stick in my mouth?”–I live in San Diego and that is sooo true! Haha!
I have also lived in NC and SC and been to TX and they like their meat down there! I havent eaten meat since I was 7 but I dont care one iota what anyone else eats, just as long as they enjoy it and are smiling when they’re done! 🙂
Amy
September 11, 2010 at 11:37 amWhen in Rome! Shiner bock is definitely the only thing that pairs with a plate of BBQ at the Salt Lick, a Texas institution. I can’t wait to go back since my first trip to Austin in March. I should mention I live in Connecticut, so it may be a while, however I am definitely planning to return one day 🙂 Thanks for sharing your experience!
Tina
September 11, 2010 at 11:41 amThis side of you is so much fun to see. Your carrot-stick Cali side is lovely as well, but its always interesting to see a little something different now and again. Glad you’re enjoying yourself. 😀
Kelly
September 11, 2010 at 11:58 amI really want to show my boyfriend that picture of all the meat because he would be so impressed/want to go. Or maybe I shouldn’t because we can’t afford a spur of the moment road trip to Texas right now. Looks delicious!

September 11, 2010 at 12:02 pmMmmm I love some good ol’ Texas BBQ! Those ribs look amazing! Enjoy Texas! 🙂

September 11, 2010 at 12:52 pmI love the way you recapped this trip 🙂 The food looks so glorious. But there is nothing like coming home and eating what you are used to. Even if it is a carrot stick 🙂

September 11, 2010 at 12:59 pmThat food looks so full of win, I can barely comprehend it. You make me tempted to stop at the BBQ place near my apartment on the way home…but I’m trying to resist, as I know it can’t compare!

September 11, 2010 at 4:21 pmOMG, SALT LICK! I know the owner and go there pretty frequently. In fact, I’ll be there for a fundraiser tomorrow night! It is so very good. Love the Lauren’s Sauce with habanero peppers. A-maz-ing.

September 11, 2010 at 6:42 pmI may or may not be having a pretty exciting and big gathering of sorts in Austin this October and Salt Lick may or may not be catering it. That is all I will say about that. BBQ=LOVE.

September 11, 2010 at 7:06 pmhahaha that place is so good! and I’m not even really a fan of meat either!
Jessica@tastyandtrim
September 11, 2010 at 7:21 pmI was the same way when I ate ribs this summer. One bite and I couldn’t stop before devouring an entire slab!

September 11, 2010 at 7:39 pmAh… you’ve now rounded out most my favorite places in Austin (hit up Barton Springs pool and Sno Beach and Mangia Pizza and Sandy’s for frozen custard and you’ll probably have covered all my bases)… We actually had our rehearsal dinner at the Salt Lick and what a party it was! And their potato salad? I’ve never tasted anything like it – I’m not a potato salad fan and I could eat their’s by the bucket-full!

September 12, 2010 at 7:13 amThat is my favorite bbq restaurant of ALL TIME!!! While your in the area you should try Matt’s El Rancho, it will change your life!

September 12, 2010 at 7:14 amI like the play-by-play photos–if only we could get it in stop-motion style(!). No need for carrots, you deserve all the finger licking goodness lady.

September 12, 2010 at 12:56 pmAustin did the same to me. I was a vegetarian but caved after a month of living here. I adore this place and seriously can’t figure out who I have become because of TX, but I’m loving every second of it! if you’re still in town, we should meet up for coffee!
