Dad’s Day

Hi guys!

Sorry for being so MIA today but I’ve been spending every moment with my dad! This year more than ever I wanted to make sure he had a dynamite day, ya know? So far, so good! 🙂

This morning I literally accused Ryan of slipping me a tylonel pm. I was SO TIRED. Like so tired that I felt like my eyes were glued shut….it was so weird!! I’m usually a get up and go type of gal but this morning I was hurtin’ for certain. Ryan had to head out early for a family kayak trip and I finally pulled myself up around 8:00. For breakfast I was craving some cold cereal!

This bowl was a combo of 1 cup Nature’s Path optimum, two tablespoons MixMyGranola “Recovery Mix” (love this!) and a few quaker oatmeal squares….with fresh berries & almond milk; I was happily munching along! The Recovery Mix included 100% Organic Muesli, Organic Banana Chips, Dried Mangos, Organic Raisins, Roasted Almonds, Roasted Cashews, Organic Soy Beans. Very, very yummy! 🙂
After I digested I headed over to my parent’s house to walk on their treadmill so I could hang out with my dad at the same time. For the first time, I tried Angela’s “treadmill hill workout” and can I just say WOAH BABY! I cranked up the incline all the way, like Ange does, and power walked at 4.0 for 30 minutes. I was huffing, puffing and dripping sweat….it was awesome!
I didn’t wear my heart rate monitor but I’m 100% sure I was working way harder than I ever have on a 30 minute elliptical session. I think hill walking might be my new “non-running” cardio! I never thought walking could really give me a workout but it must be the steep incline!
After working out I quickly showered and a little somethin’-somethin’—-

I was at my parent’s house so I didn’t have all the options that I normally have for snackies. I found this packet of chocolate SuperFood though in the pantry and made some “chocolate milk” with it! Yum, yum, yum! It was no Amazing Meal (didn’t have the protein powder, just the greens) but it did the trick and actually tasted totally delicious!!
And then my dad and I went to church together. My mom unfortunately had to work all day so my dad and I had some good ol’ father-daughter time. It was a great service and afterwards we went to Pita Pit to grab a quick lunch! I had the usual hummus whole wheat pita with avocado, lettuce, olives, banana peppers, pickles, onions and hot sauce. Twas amazing, per usual 🙂

And after lunch we went and saw Star Trek together. Now let me just say I am TOTALLY NOT a fantasy type of gal. I actually despise harry potter, twilight (gasp!), lord of the rings, star wars, star trek………anything fantasy! Its just not my cup of tea. I was really not excited to see this movie but, hey, its my dad’s day and he really wanted to go. Plus, it was way too hot to do anything else—we reached 100 today with 95% humidity.Gag. So, the movie was actually quite good. I was shocked that I almost liked it. I wouldn’t go and become a “treckie” now, but it was entertaining to say the least. And very well done. I surprised myself!
After the movie we stopped at the store and I got a tea and drank it down in like two seconds flat. Guess I was a bit dehydrated?

I just snacked on a mango at home and we are watching golf. My mom is on her way over and I’m cooking us dinner!

Happy Father’s Day!!!!! I’ll see you in a bit for a fun dinner recap 🙂

Jenna, how did you slice that mango so nicely?! I always feel like I’m juggling a bar of slippery soap and a knife when I attempt it! My results are always really choppy looking chunks and I usually feel like I’m throwing a lot of it away. What’s the secret?

Hey jenna! I recently discovered your blog and I’m addicted. Very classy, very informative and very balanced nutritionally. I’m in love.

Anyways, I’m glad you discovered the WONDER of incline training! It’s my GO-TO workout. Whenever I’m on the treadmill I crank the incline all the way up, and increase the speed from 2.7 up every 5 minutes (stopping at 3.4), and I do that for about an hour. I don’t run much because I have a leg length discrepency + scoliosis that makes it painful for my right hip. So incline train! It’s a GREAT workout!

Happy Father’s Day, Jenna! Good to hear that you and your dad are having a blast. I am so not a science fiction person (although I do love fantasy), but maybe Star Trek would be ok for me too :).

That pita pit stuff looks amazing! I still need to check that place out.

hey girl–i don’t know if this is too personal of a question, but i’ve always wondered–what does your mom do? she seems to work a lot of nights–was thinking maybe something with catering or what not, because i can tell she sure can cook, and the love of great food runs in your family! i know your dad loved the father-daughter time!!

What a nice day with Dad!
Jillian Michaels is a big fan of incline training on the treadmill. When I realized that I am not cut out for running right now, I started switching over to that exclusively. It’s made me want to go hiking so bad!

And lastly…that Sublime Mate is my favorite Honest Tea. SO YUMMY!!!

You know what? That happens to me a lot actually, waking up and feeling like my eyes are glued shut! I think I have discovered why this happens though…some nights I rub my eyes and pick my eyes constantly because I feel like there is something in them. I think that causes them to get really irritated (obviously) so then I wake up and they are swollen or something. Either way, it sucks!

I feel ya on the Star Trek movie. I heard that “Trekies” actually didn’t like the movie because it wasn’t “true” to the original Star Trek .. maybe that’s why us “Non-Trekies” actually enjoyed it! 🙂 Happy Father’s Day!

Walking at an incline is really tough!! Sometimes it’s harder than running – I feel like I can’t ever get in a groove! I usually do max incline at 3.5. I’m super impressed with your 4.0! Enjoy the rest of your day!!
