Happy Birthday, FashionABLE

Anchinalu Scarf

Hey you guys!

It’s FashionABLE’s third birthday this week and to celebrate, there’s a SALE! For the next few days, all FashionABLE scarves + leather will be 30% off. That’s from the 23rd (today) till the 25th. Perfect for getting that early holiday shopping done!

I’m also excited to share this video with you guys today. I met Mulu when I visited Ethiopia in August and we instantly clicked. She’s warm, funny and didn’t mind when I broke the thread on the loom about 30 times as I attempted to learn to weave. Oops. It’s harder than it looks!

I keep this photo hanging above my desk where I can see it every day. Mulu, along the other women working for FashionABLE, are such heroes in my eyes. When I think of courage, I think of these women. They continue to inspire me daily.

This isn’t a sponsored post and I’m not making money on any scarves that are sold. I’m truly, truly passionate about the FashionABLE mission and just wanted to share that with you all today. So what are you waiting for? Holiday shopping awaits!

Tigist Clutch{this clutch is my fav! I carry it every single day. The quality of the leather is amazing.}

    I have an honest question, and I’m just trying to get clarification, not trying to be snarky. When these items go on sale, are the women who made them still getting the same compensation as when the items are sold at full price? I like the idea of purchasing socially-conscious products, but whenever there is a program-wide “sale” of this kind, I automatically think that either a). these women are going to be compensated less for these products, or b). not as many of the proceeds are going directly to the women as I had thought, and therefore the program is a little less charitable than I would have hoped. I realize there could be more to it, so can you clarify?

      Hey Jana! My name is Marisa & I work with fashionABLE. That’s a valid question! A unique thing about fashionABLE is that it isn’t about charity, but is set up to be a sustainable business. We buy the scarves from Africa at a set price and require that our women are compensated a fair wage. Any sales or marketing promotions we do on our end do not affect what the women receive. If you’d love to talk about this more, please email us at info@livefashionABLE.com. Thanks!!

        Is it possible to find out from fashionABLE how much the women are being paid for a specific product I’m interested in, compared to how much I would pay for that product?

          Hey Jana. The women are not paid on commission, they’re paid a (good, fair) wage, so it does not matter what product they produce (or which one you buy!) just that the work is quality!
          Please email us at info@livefashionABLE.com with any further questions… Thnx!

    Hey Jenna!
    I just came across your website yesterday (which is surprising to me because I am a food hound and constantly searching through great food blogs) while looking for a recipe. I liked what I saw and as always, I went to your about page and was stoked you shared your faith first- thank you. Then today I peaked back because it was still open and the fashionAble post was there. Our dearest friends work for Ellilita and FashionAble in ET. They weren’t there for your trip because they were on sabatical here in SB, CA but we spoke about your team while you were there and they were here. Ian and Brittany Bentley of Steadfast Love Ethiopia. My hubby and kiddos may be heading to visit in the Spring. What a small world and thanks for posting about FashionAble’s work and latest info! And I love your blog, been added to my short list.

    FashionABLE is at the top of my wish list right now. I have a seriously hard time spending money on things that aren’t “needs” for some reason, but I’m trying to talk myself into splurging on a beautiful scarf, especially because fair labor and sustainable wages are issues that get me super fired up!
