Breakfast

Hard to Get Going…

It def. was a little hard getting up this morning knowing I have to go to work in Orlando at 10:00 and have Ryan sleeping so peacefully next to me (well he was sleeping…he woke up when I got up–I’m not the most graceful person in the morning, putzing around for my breakfast and on the computer!). Anyways, last night at my parents I found my favorite childhood breakfast cereal–cracklin’ oat bran–and took some with me to have this morning for breakfast! I used to love this stuff! Its not the most healthful cereal because of the sugar and fat but it tastes so good!! I had a cup of that with 1% milk and a banana this morning and I plan to hit up starbucks for some coffee as well (my mom gave me a 10 dollar starbucks card that she had but didn’t use–score!).

I packed my lunch as well at my parent’s house last night because I wont be going home before work. My lunch isn’t the most “exciting” lunch that I could have packed if I was at my own house, but I had to make due with the circumstances! After work I’m going to straight to the gym so when I get home from that I’ll get my lunch post up.

Have a good day!

i have to work too! only, my work doesn’t allow breaks unless you work 6 hours or more! i’m working 11-4 today! jenna-i would really like your help here actually (and anyone w/some experience in this area!). i work at Bath and Body Works (absolutely LOVE it!!^_^) but they don’t let you eat on the sales floor (duh!) and i don’t get a lunch break b/c i only work 5 hours! what should i do in this scenerio? i just got up and had a big breakfast (it’s 10 now) but i KNOW i will be hungry by 2 (if not 1!). what i’m doing today is, right before i go in, i’m having a tuna salad and cottage cheese, and i packed some carrot sticks and almonds to munch on. i think i will be fine today, but i am one of those people who like to sit down and eat my whole meal at once (keeps me full longer i’ve found). i guess i should just suck it up b/c as long as i work, i am going to have to acccommodate their schedule, but it still sucks! any advice? thanx! everyone enjoy your day ^_^!!

Ana- I know exactly how you feel. I am a waitress and sometimes if I work weekends I have to be there at 3:30 and don’t leave until 11:30- without ANY breaks!! I usually eat a bigger breakfast, and lunch and a snack right before. I always bring a piece of fruit with me, 1 or 2 granola bars, or a bag of trail mix or something so I don’t eat my arm off. Alot of people at work eat french fries and such from peoples plates before they go out (yuck I know!) but I bring snacks so I don’t consure 100 french fries at work! haha! I am usually starving when I get home and make eggs, toast, fruit or something else for dinner! Hope that helps at all- the hours can suck sometimes!!
jenna- I LOVE cracklin oat bran. It was my favorite growing up too! I rarely buy it now bc it is usually one of the most expensive cereals ($4 or 5 a box!!) but it taste so great every now and then (I’m craving it now! haha). I had kashi blueberries this morning with syrup, blueberries, a banana, milk …it was delicious! thanks for the tips and for everything!

Jenna, do you ever look through your old postings from weeks ago? I am going to try slowly getting away from the food journal, but sometimes I look through back entries to reassure myself that I am eating well. I want to work up to having the type of realtionship with food that you have, but since you do document everything you eat I’m wondering if you ever kinda check up on yourself or something by browsing through your past entries. Thanks for your help and for your blog it’s helping me out so much.

I’m really quite clueless about heart rate monitors but Jenna I know you have one.. Besides your heart rate, does it tell you anything else? Can you figure out how far you have run from wearing one, or just how many calories you have burned? Anyone other than Jenna wear one, and do you like it? Thanks in advance for any replies 🙂

hey Jenna (and maybe VeggieGirl & others),

I have to make something using healthy fats for a class, and I was wondering if anybody had a recipe using avocados… guacamole and baked tortilla chips would be an obvious way to go, but it has to be something that would be appetizing at 9am!

I was thinking an avocado smoothie– with avocado, vanilla yogurt, orange juice, some kind of fruit?, ground flax– would be an interesting way to get in 2 healthy fats without having it taste slimy or gross but I am very new to cooking (I’ve only been venturing into the kitchen since I started reading your blog!) and I don’t know if that would work or taste alright. If that sounds reasonable, what kind of fruits do you think would go well?

Or, what are some other breakfast-y applications of healthy fats?? Flax cookies or muffins or brownies (VG)? Please help… thanks so much!

    Jenn-
You could always make a yummy omega-3 loaded breakfast? Say whole grain toast with cottage cheese and smoked salmon?

or….perhaps a frittata with smoke salmon and some yummy veggies (mushrooms, onions, peppers?…etc?)

    -morning glory flax muffins

think nuts and peanut putter? perhaps a yummy banana-walnut loaf?

just thought i’d throw out a few ideas!!

Let me know what you choose, I hope it goes well 🙂

    linds-
it really depends on what kind of HR monitor you have. i’m a distance runner and have always been against using the techy stuff.. but the new Garmin 405s are out and i’m super tempted to get one.
if you get one with all the bells and whistles, it can have a gps (telling you how far you went), your average pace, pace per mile, HR, calories burned, but it’s not usually accurate =/ you can have a “training partner” that you set a pace for, and it will tell you how far ahead or behind you are. it’s pretty ridiculous how far technology has come!
    but wow – pretty pricey..

linds…I use a polar f4 (i think?) and it lets you put in your age and weight so it can calculate calories burned and it also stores recent workouts with the date. that one costs about $90, but they make other models too, I think the least expensive one is about $50.

    jenn:
Something easy and good for breakfast could be avacado eggs benedict…but instead of poaching the eggs, hard boil them for easy transportation. And if you dont want to spend alot on english muffins, Thomas brand makes these little mini wheat bagels and a bag is only like 2-3 dollars for 10 of them, and since you only need a half for each thats 20 servings. I would just slice the avocado and eggs and maybe tomatoes (or sundried tomatoes?) and put them on a half of a bagel. You can make hollandaise sauce and drizzle it when you get there, or I think they make ready made sauce…

    Jenna:
I don’t know if you’ve heard about this before, but every Sunday there is a farmers market in down town Orlando (at Lake Eola) from 10am-4pm. My roommate and I went today…It was GREAT! They have tons of fresh local and organic produce (for soooo cheap! I got a pound of cherries for ONE DOLLAR!!), craft stands, live music, and yummy food!! Plus lots of free samples! We have already decided to make it a regular Sunday excursion…you should definitely check it out sometime!

    **Jenn:

    – how about chocolate pudding or carob pudding? to make 4 servings, you can place 2 avocados, 2 bananas, and 1/4 cup cocoa powder OR carob powder into a food processor (and then just process/blend until smooth and “pudding-like”).

    – an avocado smoothie would be great as well – you can blend avocado with some juice (orange would work best) or water, as we as some cantaloupe, pineapple, and berries.

    – I like to use nuts and flax in my baking and recipes; and here’s a photograph from my Flickr account (with an explanation on how to make it) of a hazelnut-banana pudding that is simply DIVINE: http://www.flickr.com/photos/21960046@N08/2228983725/in/photostream/

hope this helps, Jenn! I’d be happy to help if you need more ideas! :0)

    Jenn-
I’m procrastinating studying for midterms and looked up some avocado recipes for you.. There’s a link here for avocado quick bread, it got really good reviews: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Avocado-Quick-Bread/Detail.aspx
    Or avocado smoothie: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Avocado-Blast/Detail.aspx
Or you could make a breakfast burrito with eggs, tomato, cheese, avocado and whole wheat tortillas.

    Sarah C-
Thanks for the info! Would you recommend buying one?

    hk#1, Sarah C, VeggieGirl, linds–

Thank you for all of your GREAT ideas/recipes/links!!!!

It’s actually a group project and basically, we are each presenting on a different type of fat, what foods it can be found in, associated health benefits or hazards, etc… and bringing in something representative! Our take-home message is going to be that “Fat Phobia” is unwarranted if we choose our fats wisely. Even so, we thought the best way to go would be to offer bite-size portions of everything (so people don’t end up eating their entire fat allotment for the day during one class!). What we have planned so far is…

    * smoked salmon (omega 3), cucumber, and lite whipped cream cheese (saturated fat) OR whipped cottage cheese on whole grain crackers

    * baked garden scramble (EVOO to sautee veggies, cholesterol AND omega-3 from eggs)

    * something with avocado or flax

    * Ak Mak crackers (sesame) with almond butter (nuts)– for a vegan option

    * (We are also going to cover fat substitutes and trans fats, but we thought we’d spare our peers potential ‘gastrointestinal distress’ and an increased risk for cardiovascular disease).

I am responsible for unsaturated fats (MUFAs and PUFAS– including nuts and vegetable-derived fats and oils). Our presentation isn’t for a few weeks, but I am such a spaz in the kitchen that I know I need to make a few practice batches of whatever. I was thinking that some type of fruit smoothie would round out our “tasting plate” nicely AND kill the ‘avocado or flax’ bird with the same stone… but who knows, I might have to rethink it– I am so excited to try out these recipes! 8) Thanks again. I’m still open to suggestions, so let me know if anybody has any other ideas!

    Jenn,

Definitely! I feel naked when I work out now if I don’t have it on! I love it because I can look down during my workout and know that if my heart rate isn’t where it should be that I need to pick it up! Although I’m not sure if the model with the calorie counter is totally worth it…I left a spin class once and it told me I burnt 800 ish calories…when I know that number should have been about half that. So I’m not sure on the accuracy on those…but other people seem to like that feature.
