Jenna, I’ve followed your blog for years. Your pics of food and your life and your positive attitude are so delicious & fun (in that order), I recently got my first cell phone and have fun following a few friends (and strangers) on instagram. I have to say I was so delighted with your recent #turtlenecksoftheheart modesty instagram pic.

Rarely is modesty spoken about other than at church or in my home. I have 2 girls and a son and I volunteer with the young women in our church and we talk about this a lot to the girls. We have a pamphlet that is circulated to all the youth in our church called “For the Strength of Youth” that has guidelines for dating, modesty, education, media, honesty, language, music, etc.

Modesty it seems is not something most people give a thought to, I cringe in line at the grocery store with my kids.

So reading your instagram a few days ago I had the biggest smile on my face. I thought it so wonderful of you to use your voice and the platform that you have to spread this message. For girls and women to see a young beautiful woman such as yourself place importance on this is such a great example.

I look forward to your future posts: food, life, wedding, reading, style, you do a great job tackling them all.

How are skintight pants modest? A genuine question, I thought that modest would be avoiding highlighting the outline of the body.

      • jenna
        February 21, 2013 at 11:08 am

Not sure how that photo came off, but those are regular skinny jeans — they are far from skintight. Maybe it’s hard to tell from a photo? Dressing “modest” simply means wearing clothes…not skintight tops that show off mega cleavage, extra short skirts or tiny booty shorts..or whatever some young girls are into wearing these days. I see little harm in wearing skinny jeans but to each their own.

If you were talking about the first photo, those are workout clothes. We were hiking.

        • Elle
          February 21, 2013 at 11:23 am

yes I meant the skinny jeans. I think they are fine to wear, I just never thought of them as “modest” in the traditional sense, like what you would see a Muslim woman wearing in the US or something.

Hi, I think I asked this before but the answer wasn’t viewed by me. Any chance of getting your book to KOBO ereader? I checked for it in my “kobo gallery” and its not there, so I guess that means I’d have to order it physically from some online location. I wonder if it is available in libraries? Thanks Jenna.

Ruth 1:6 has been the foundation for my husband and I’s relationship. So much so, he has it in Hebrew on his wedding band (http://secure.jamesavery.com/jewelry/search/product/WB-153/Scripture-of-Ruth-Band/) … We’ve a fun story, so it was AWESOME to find such a perfect band (and I’m a tad obsessed with James Avery jewelry …) I’m looking at getting the same Hebrew script in tattoo form on my wrist (or as a ring?) in the next few months. It was also woven into the vows we wrote.

    Hold fast to it.

Hi Jenna – I definitely don’t mean this to be inflammatory, but I’m a little confused by the “modesty wear” concept. I’m all about women taking the focus OFF their bodies if that’s what makes them happy (a very hard feat to accomplish in our culture), but I’m not comfortable with demonizing women who make the conscious decision to dress in a ‘revealing’ (subjective) way. What may look or feel disempowering to one person may be very personally empowering to another. Every woman is different. I know that dressing sexy sometimes feels compulsory in our culture – in order to get ahead, get noticed, etc. – but not *every* woman who shows skin has succumbed to social pressure, or is so brainwashed by our culture that she can’t make decisions on her own. Just putting it out there. I enjoy your blog and am just interested to hear your thoughts.
