Behind The Butter

wednesday notes

Last night for girls night I made Angela’s whole grain carrot cake loaf! However, instead of spelt flour I used pastry flour…and instead of walnuts I used pecans…and I totally didn’t measure my raisins. It was so good that instead of being a good guest and leaving the leftovers for my friends to enjoy, I swiped the other half of the cake and totally ate it for breakfast this morning.

I hope I still have friends next week.

This morning I planted my second ever garden consisting of spinach, swiss chard and peas. I don’t really know how to do it. The last time I planted a garden I was nine and wearing a red checkered bonnet. However, I simply couldn’t wait for my radishes (or carrots) to grow, so I did what any impatient pioneer-wannabe kid would do: I dug everything up and ate it all too early. True story.

I’ve rekindled my love affair for juicing! I figured my juicer was taking as much space hidden down in the cabinet with all the pots and pans that I might as well leave it permanently out on the counter so I would actually use the thing. And my strategy worked! Having that huge metal appliance stare at me every morning has inspired me to make different delicious concoctions daily. So far, in the morning before breakfast I’ve been enjoying green juice (cucumber, apple, pear, parsley, romaine lettuce, lemon) and in the afternoons I’ve been drinking red juice (beet, apple, carrot, celery).  Now the only problem is cleaning the thing.

I have hair extensions. Happy now? I told Adam that buying them was “the best $85 I have EVER spent” and he got mad because he’s been bugging me to spend $80 to replace my car battery. I told him that now if I get stranded on the side of the road I’ll at least have cool hair.

At least I have my priorities straight.

Love the hair! Totally worth being stranded 😉

I am so on the fence about buying a juicer…. mostly because of the cleaning aspect…. Plus it seems kinda pricy to be juicing all those veggies? no?

    June 15, 2011 at 1:30 pm

Your extensions look awesome on you and I have spent what you’ve spent, plus add a zero to the end, on hair before. Hair can be pricey…but so worth it! More worth it than car batteries 🙂

And my juicer is a doorstop. It’s in the box from the last time I moved and I havent taken it out to juice. I really ought to try your strategy I’m thinking.

That last pic of you…just awesome! Lovin’ the hair!!!

I need to make that cake. Can any flour do? Quinoa maybe?

I was going to get extensions once…when I had the worst haircut of my life…sobbed for, well, I’m sobbing about it. But extensions not in my budget here.

Juicing? This blog has “GONE GREEN” it seems! 360! I don’t really get juices though – isn’t is eliminating all the fiber and nutrients? Or not…? Anyone?

    • Jaime
      June 15, 2011 at 7:36 pm

Yes, if you use a juicer you leave behind all the fiber from the veg/fruit but keep all the (natural) sugar. Not to mention the juicer is a single function appliance. I got a VitaMix which is a very powerful (but really expensive) blender that liquifies pretty much ANYTHING so you can make anything you can make in a blender, juicer, or food processor all in one appliance…which helped me justify the price! haha!! Not to mention it is super easy to clean.

      • Baking 'n' Books
        June 15, 2011 at 8:20 pm

Thanks Jaime! Yay an answer 🙂 So the Vita-Mix juices too? I thought it was more for blending as the blades are short no? Does it blend well even? It seems so “deep” I don’t know how people get stuff out of that thing! 😉

I would imagine the blender would keep more nutrients though.

So – why would anyone just want to drink sugars then? Hmm…need to ponder this some more I think 😉

I bought the same extensions for my wedding! I totally agree that they’re the best $85 I’ve spent (in a while.) I’ve clipped them in a few evening after the wedding… I have the 18 inch and although they don’t add a lot of length to my hair- they make it looks so much more voluminous!

I got the hair for my extensions at Sally’s too, then sewed the clips on myself to save a little $$. I think I ended up paying around $55 total for my hair + clips. I get compliments on them all the time. Here’s how I did it if you’re interested: http://foodmakeuphair.blogspot.com/2010/09/hair-extensions.html

I love the hair and must try the bread. Probably healthier than the carrot birthday cake I demolished. True story: I had my hair colored (more blonde!) last week and my hair stylist made it all pretty and fluffy and voluminous. I walked out to my car…. and my battery was dead. My cool hair resulted in really fast assistance to jump my battery (and I had jumper cables, didn’t have to be too damsel-in-distress-y). So it DOES work.

After paying $XXX for highlights the past few months, $85 sounds like a steal to me. Plus, the cuter you are, the more gentlemen will stop to help you on the side of the road…and that’s good for flat tires, dead batteries, and a whole mess of other car issues. Sounds like a much better deal than a dumb ol’ car battery.

Im sure the hair questions are the last thing you want to be talking about on you’re food blog lol, I can tell by the way you stated it, oh I would be the same way! but it seems like people have so many questions since yours looks so natural and affordable. Would you mind telling us a little more about them? Are they clip in? Did you get them cut and colored at a salon to blend so naturally? I would really like my hair to be fuller and look natural at the same time and there are so many bad brands out there to take chances on. Thanks Jenna 🙂

Okay, so I’m catching up on my reader after a week vacation, so I’m late to the party. While I love your hair, I’m wondering why your relatively new car should need a battery already? That should be covered under your warranty, m’dear. At least prorated so that you’re only out $25 or so.

They look really good, really good for $85. Follower from Vero Beach, friend of Betty.
