A Better Bagel

by jenna on May 26, 2009

Good morning! How nice is it that its already Tuesday?

Ryan and I stayed up quite late to finish Dances with Wolves. Forgot how long of a movie it is. An oldie but a goodie no doubt! And I just had to share with you a picture of the “treat” I made Ryan.

Behold the goodness:

Drool! It was a warm WF chocolate chip cookie with vanilla bean coconut milk ice cream and Hershey’s extra dark chocolate sauce on top. Can you believe this dessert was vegan?! I think not. Well Ryan didn’t at least! He inhaled it :)

Now onto this morning. I was SO psyched to try out my new bagels

Ingredients in the bagels include: Filtered water, organic wheat flour, organic vital wheat gluten, organic whole wheat flour, hempseed flour, organic flax meal, organic poppy seeds, dates, organic oat fiber, organic pumpkin seeds, organic millet, contains less than 2% of the following: hemp seeds, organic cracked wheat, organic sprouted Kamut® berries, organic sprouted spelt berries (wheat), organic sunflower seeds, sea salt, organic sprouted barley, organic sesame seeds, organic sprouted amaranth berries, organic sprouted quinoa.

And each bagel boasts 19 grams of protein and 13 grams of fiber. Holy moly!! I couldn’t even believe it! Each bagel is 280 calories and has 8 grams of fat.

I loved how these were pre-cut and that made it easy to just pop one in the toaster this morning! I spread mine with about a tbsp of raw almond butter, a smear of raspberry preserves and topped it with half a sliced naner—

Very interesting! These really did not taste like a “normal” bagel but were good all the same. They were very chewy and nutty and tasted delicious with almond butter. These would also make a great sandwich because they were quite savory. With all the protein and fiber in this breakfast I should be set for awhile! 😉

This morning I’m going to walk the mile to my yoga studio for Tuesday’s hot yoga flow class. Its finally nice enough that I can walk!

See you for lunch!

Those bagels look interesting. I’ll have to keep an eye out for those at the store. I like chewy and nutty breads, normal bagels aren’t my favorite.

Emily @ The Experimentarian May 26, 2009 at 6:28 am

Oh my gosh! I saw those at the store the other day and almost snagged them, but the were almost $8! I had to pass them up due to the mountain of other goodies I had, but maybe next time :)

Priyanka May 26, 2009 at 6:33 am

meg May 26, 2009 at 6:41 am

Look at all that yummy food! Ryan sure did get a special treat and that is awesome that it is vegan.

lena May 26, 2009 at 6:43 am

Hi Jenna, just curious but after reading your guest blog on french women and their eats and how you or they never counted calories, do you now count calories again? thanks. Am trying intuitive eating and i hope it works for me…

jenna May 26, 2009 at 9:46 am

Nope, I don’t count calories. Never have and never will. I’m a big proponent because I feel like it leads to obsession and in some cases, disordered eating. But that’s just a personal thought of mine; I know counting calories works very well for some people! I just eat when I’m hungry and stop when I’m full!

Mara @ What's For Dinner? May 26, 2009 at 6:45 am

Hmm… i know that hemp bagels would go over well in my house, but not because of the bagel part!! :)

Yummy breakfast! I am going to look for those at Whole Foods today! Were they in the freezer section?

Jocelyn May 26, 2009 at 7:36 am

yummy treat for the bf…looks delish!

Just curious..I read somewhere ..I think the Hungry Yogini’s blog that there is really no such thing as raw almond butter?

“She told me that there is actually no such thing as a truly raw almond here in the US thanks to a pasteurization law that was passed not too long ago. They ruled that all almonds must be pasteurized for safety purposes because of a few cases of salmonella but companies are still allowed to label it raw. I was quite shocked to find this out!”

Just wondering what your take is on this? Not that I really care..between raw or not raw almond butter lol just curious as to what you think :) thanks!

Coco Knudson May 26, 2009 at 7:41 am

Shannon (The Daily Balance) May 26, 2009 at 7:47 am

fantastic dessert! I could have never made that for someone and not enjoyed one myself! I hope you at least took a bite!

The bagel looks awesome!

Nicole May 26, 2009 at 7:53 am

All of the most delicious and decadent desserts that I’ve had have been vegan- so yes, I can believe it! Mmmm, it looks so good!

Susan May 26, 2009 at 8:07 am

Droooool over that cookie!

Wow, those are some amazing stats on those bagels! 19g of protein?? Let us know if it satisfied your morning hunger, I’m curious! :)

Erin May 26, 2009 at 8:34 am

how much almond butter do you go through in a week? I buy a jar and struggle to make it last 2 weeks….I love it so much!! :) Just wondering how long it usually takes you to finish one

Christie @ BeadLuvah May 26, 2009 at 8:41 am

That dessert looks so yummy!!!

Where did you get those bagels? They sound really interesting.

Michelle Hisae May 26, 2009 at 8:57 am

I’ve eyed those bagels many-a-times at WF, but never got myeslf to actually buy them. What great nutritionals, huh? Let’s see if they hold you over! Maybe I’ll go get some now…(:

Emily May 26, 2009 at 8:58 am

That dessert looks amazing!! 😀

Jessica May 26, 2009 at 9:23 am

Yummo – that dessert looks amazing!!!!
I think I have told you this before but I am not sure you got it (my computer did something funky when I sent the comment) but my maiden name is Weber!! I know there are tons of Webers out there so it doesn’t really mean anything but I always feel a tiny bit connected to other Webers! Weber is now my middle name so I still sign stuff Jessica Weber Blakewood – I just couldn’t give it up entirely!

Diana (Soap & Chocolate) May 26, 2009 at 9:26 am

A better bagel – you’re not kidding! I have bagels classified under “naughty” in my head, but with those kind of stats I don’t think I’d feel too bad eating a hemp bagel. YUM!

Help Meghan Run May 26, 2009 at 9:44 am

Wow those bagels look awesome! I’ll put them on the shopping list. Were they particularly expensive?

Danielle May 26, 2009 at 9:53 am

Wow that bagel looks great!

Abby May 26, 2009 at 9:54 am

I’m with you on the extremely attractive appeal of the bagel–I love bagels, but struggle to find one that isn’t simply flour sprinkled with a few oats and grains–but I can only imagine how expensive they were. Does anyone know how much they were or if there is a similar product out there nutritionally? (I love Ezekiel bread, if that’s a good reference point.)

And holy dessert…

lena May 26, 2009 at 10:09 am

cool thanks for the encouragement Jenna, will try to work at that.. i hope i succeed at breaking the hold on me! cheers!

Ruby Red Vegan May 26, 2009 at 10:13 am

ahhh! those are my favorite bagels, ever! they are perfect toasted with heaps of justin’s maple almond butter. i actually am a snob about these bagels and use them only as a vehicle for justin’s m.a.b. yum.

and my oh my, ryan’s dessert looks so fabulous! i totally want one just like it! you are a wonderful dessert creator!

Ellen (Peace In Motion) May 26, 2009 at 10:31 am

I am so spoiled by having worked in a bagel shop in high school Fresh HOT bagels right out of the oven, nothing better!

Kristina May 26, 2009 at 10:45 am

Im not going to lie.. seeing the insides of people’s fridges who are actively working on nutrition and fitness interests me, so I tag you.!! Check out the correlating post http://nikesandponytails.blogspot.com/2009/05/you-are-what-you-eat.html

Hallie May 26, 2009 at 11:20 am

Those bagels look perfect! If they made a cinnamon-raisin flavor, I would be all over that haha :-) I have got to make it over to Whole Foods.

AshB May 26, 2009 at 2:08 pm

um went to leafy greens cafe today.

i got the “pasta” and chocolate blackberry ice cream.

that place is going to become a bad habit (for the bank at least)

kailey May 26, 2009 at 2:41 pm

now i have got to try those bagels!! thanks for the review 😀
that is one awesome looking dessert too!

Caroline May 26, 2009 at 10:41 pm

I am on a MAJOR hemp kick lately, so I must try those bagels, ASAP.

Crystal May 27, 2009 at 12:36 pm

I bought the hemp bagels on Monday and tried them yesterday for breakfast. I dont know if I got a bad batch or what but they were GROSS! For some reason they taste like fish. I threw mine out when I got home, which was a bummer because they werent cheap. I guess if I would have piled on the almond butter and other toppings I wouldnt have to taste the bagel, but with just light whipped cream cheese they were disgusting!
