My House, The Bakery

Well, hello!

I realized I haven’t shown you my groceries in a while so here ya go! To be honest, I’ve been sort of inconsistent about grocery shopping lately….usually just running to the health food store a few blocks away mid-week to grab another bag of spinach or bunch of bananas rather than doing a regular shop once a week. However, I want to start cooking healthy meals at home more and that means planning a list and sticking to it rather than just grabbing this and that! (I’m all about impulse purchases at the grocery store..oops).

  • grapefruits
  • oranges
  • carrots
  • 2 bags spinach
  • bananas
  • apples

IMG_4822

  • yogurts
  • quinoa bread
  • crack trail mix
  • raspberry jam
  • agave nectar
  • hummus
  • Kashi cereal
  • tomato paste & sauce
  • tomato soup

Lunch was packed and brought to the studio. I had a big apple:

Plus a wheat flatbread with laughing cow and hummus + a crispy orange bell pepper…my favorite!

I procrastinated writing for awhile by cleaning my house and baking Miss Polly’s homemade nutri-grain bars!! Polly, you are a genius….and these were SO easy to make! However, I’d call them “raspberry crumble bars” instead because they definitely were not healthy enough to be considered a nutri-grain bar. Lots of buttah in this one…but oh, so good! I have a soft spot for anything with a crumble topping and raspberry jam and these were right up my ally.

IMG_4826

I also made some snobby joes out of Veganomicon. I had a bunch of already steamed lentils in my fridge that I needed to do something with so this was super easy to just throw together and will make great fast meals all week. For dinner I had a scoop of ’em with avocado and a big salad with some annie’s goddess dressing and a slice of quinoa bread toast (my new love!)…plus grated goat cheddar on top of everything 🙂

Okay confession. I CANNOT STOP EATING THESE CRUMBLE/CRACK BARS. PLEASE SOMEONE TAKE THEM AWAY FROM MEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!
2nd of the day:

IMG_4829
And there just might be a third. Who knows. I already have some in baggies to take to the girls at the studio tomorrow and to give my neighbor. I just can’t keep stuff like this in the house because I WILL eat seven of them. And like it.
In terms of training today, I had great intentions but fell short. I was supposed to go on a 90 minute ride and then once I got out there it started POURING freezing cold rain. Call me a wimp but I just couldn’t swing it. Cold rain + wind = snotty nose and scary wet roads. I did manage a 35 minute ride, which I guess is better than nothing but I’m going to have to make up for it later in the week….
Okay…back to microsoft word! Bonne nuit!

I saw those bars on Polly’s blog! So yum! Much better than a nutri-grain bar…gosh, my brother and I helped my dad work a paper route when we were little and I would have a nutri-grain bar every. morning. around 4:00 am before we headed out..needless to say I got sick of them! Glad you got some groceries! It’s such a nice feeling to be stocked and ready to cook! Oh- and the goddess dressing. I bought some 50% off the other day…but I don’t think I like it! :/

Those bars sound incredible. I’m the same way with baked goods, I just keep going back for more! I made granola this weekend and had to pawn it off on my friend and grandparents to keep from eating the entire container in one sitting 🙂 I have to get a copy of Veganomicon….everything I see from it looks and sounds fantastic! Have a great Tuesday!

Don’t feel bad about cutting your ride short- I’m training for my first 5K and literally 2 mins after I left my house this morning it started dumping buckets (I live in the east bay, so maybe the same storm?) and I also got a runny nose. : ( I’m not tough enough to run in icy rain so I went home, but as soon as I got there, it cleared up and got beautiful (grr) so I started my run all over again.

Too dangerous to ride on slick roads in the rain IMHO. Did that here too, totally clear then thunder, then downpour! I was at Whole Foods today (genuflect). So, all is right with the world. hehe.

Our TJ’s groceries look very similar. Their Navel oranges are super succulent! I’d ask you for the raspberry bar recipe, but I’m assuming it’s top secret since it’s going into your book? Happy writing!

Baked goods are a serious weakness for me! If I made those, I’d have to either give them away right away or they’d be consumed by me! Wish I could try just one, but then I’d have to figure out what to do with the rest! 😛

Since you’re going to Paris–will miss the California Wine Festival in Santa Barbara this year–3 day event really fun. They added 3-days in Laguna end of April this year. Might want to grab a posse and go. Can fly into Orange Cty airport and short drive to Newport Beach, Balboa Inland (Jolly Rogers), Fashion Island, and Laguna. Some events are in conjunction with Ritz Carlton there. Just FYI. Last Cali bash before go. Boo-hoo for California! http://bit.ly/b2Z44t

Yikes! It seems like that rainy NorCal weather is interrupting your training! I live in a wet climate too, and in order to get my outdoor workouts in, I’ve learned that if I wake up in the morning and it’s not raining, I have to go do the workout then. You can’t count on the weather staying dry all day so you have to take advantage of it when it’s nice out (or at least not pouring!).

    March 9, 2010 at 3:21 am

Yeah, I don’t think I could face a 90 minute outdoor ride in adverse weather conditions either. 35 minutes is still good, though!

QUINOA BREAD?! How widespread is this wonder grain? This is the first I’ve heard of it.

How good are oranges?? There are some lovely ones around at the moment!

What’s that brand of flat bread you used for your lunch? I love the semi-thick kind, but I just can’t find any at various supermarkets. I don’t like ‘spot shopping’ (as my mum calls it) either. But sometimes one banana a day isn’t enough 🙂

I feel you on those impulse purchases….aka why I have so many snack bars piled up in my pantry and about 8 jars of jam in my fridge. WHOOPS! I love making real dinners and planning time to cook. At the end of a busy day, I find it so relaxing and am always satisfied knowing that I am treating myself to some good eats!

Not a wimp. Anything is better than nothing.
    As a baker/cooker – what’s your most “important”/”needed” kitchen tool Jenna?
Also, do you do most of your writing at home? At night or during the day? I find I am so lazy after work and just can’t get myself together…plus I eat all night long when I’m home…is that a problem for you?

  • Becky
    March 9, 2010 at 4:33 am

I am so bad about eating everything I bake – it’s hard to resist goodies waiting for a tummy! I am such an impulse shopper, too. I have to limit trips to Whole Foods and TJ’s or I’d be broke!

  • diana(mymarblerye)
    March 9, 2010 at 4:34 am

If I bake, I must give them away. Time at home is dangerous around yummy goods. BTW I impulse buy at whole foods all the time. It’s disturbing the kind of rush I get from groceries!
