Behind The Butter

The Proposal

To say I was surprised is the understatement of the century.

I had absolutely, completely, NO IDEA this was happening. I mean, I knew eventually Adam and I would get engaged — we’ve talked about it dozens of times and, let’s be honest, I knew from the moment I set eyes on him that he was going to be my husband someday. And no, I’m not just saying that…I actually wrote in my journal that evening that I was sure I had just met my future husband. That boy never stood a chance.

The day Adam proposed, we were camping up at Hendy Woods, one of our favorite little spots in Mendocino County. We had a delicious breakfast {me, scrambled egg + bacon + cheese sandwich and him, buttermilk pancakes} at the Boonville General Store and then decided to go out for a hike in Big Hendy Grove.

We were hiking along when suddenly, Adam completely faceplanted on the trail. I’m talking, sliding into second base. He had mud all over his shirt, his hands and face. I felt SO BAD for him but he promised he was fine and we hiked on. We hiked for a couple hours before getting back to the car and heading back to our campsite for lunch {peanut butter sandwiches!}. It was then that he told me he thought today would be a great day to take those Christmas card photos I had been harassing him about for weeks now. He said we’d go wine tasting and get the guy from the winery to take our photo in front of the vineyards…it would be perfect. I was so excited to take the photos, but I whined, “You didn’t tell me we would be taking photos! I only packed gross hiking clothes!!” He assured me jeans and a t-shirt were fine.

We went to our first winery and enjoyed a tasting outside. Adam wanted to buy a bottle of the Petit Syrah to have with our chili + hot dogs that night for dinner, but when he went to reach for his credit card, he realized it was missing. We called the General Store and they didn’t have it, and we realized the only place his card could be was on the trail that we had hiked earlier — it must have fallen out when he fell.

So…we re-traced our steps. I was a little perturbed because I was excited about going to the next winery and taking our Christmas photos, but I insisted the card must be on the trail and we’d quickly grab it before heading back out wine tasting.

It was cool in the forest, so I grabbed my fleece vest from the trunk and we quickly headed back out on the trail. We got to the exact spot he fell five hours ago and there was no card but suddenly Adam goes:

“Dear, I see the card! I found it!” He was pointing to a large blue index card stapled to a redwood tree right in front of us.

“What are you talking about?! What is that? We need to find your Amex card before someone else grabs it!”

“No, I found the card! Look at it!”

I stepped forward and looked at the card….it just read “I love you” on the front. Adam pulled it off the tree and flipped it over.

“I love you because you love to get lost in the woods…”, the card read.

At this point I still had no idea what was going on and I was REALLY confused. He didn’t lose his Amex card? He planned that faceplant earlier in the mud?

Adam just grabbed my hand and pulled me down the trail. He grabbed another card stapled to a tree. It also had a reason of why he loved me. Then, the surprise really hit — our friend, Stephen, jumped out from behind the tree and started snapping photos of us. Stephen lives in Texas. It was just so out of place and so random, that I completely lost it. I had no idea what he was doing here…in the middle of Hendy Woods….thousands of miles from Austin.

We kept walking down the trail.

Then, Stephen’s wife, Morgan, stepped out from behind another tree holding an index card that stated another reason Adam loved me. At this point, I started to tear up. Stephen and Morgan are some of our dearest, dearest friends and I always thought they miiiiight be a part of the proposal but I never, ever, thought they would come here to California. I just assumed Adam would do it in Texas! I was blown away.

Right after seeing Morgan, Adam put a blindfold on me and led me into the seat of a black suburban. He drove me next door to a gorgeous apple farm and took off my blindfold. I couldn’t believe who I saw:

One of my best friends, Ashley, was standing there {also far from home} with a rose, a cup of fresh apple juice and another note of why Adam loves me.

After seeing Ashley, Adam led me over to a table in the vineyard and read my favorite card out loud:

“I love you because I am the Almanzo to your Laura…no matter what trials and hardships stand in our way…”

The bandana was re-tied around my eyes, I was put BACK into the car and we drove over to a breathtaking vineyard, that’s name literally translates to “Field of Dreams”.

When Adam pulled the blindfold off me, I couldn’t have been more shocked to see our good friend, Rocky, standing in front of a keyboard, dressing in a tux in the middle of the vineyard.

He read another love card to me then started playing and singing a Sam Cooke song while Adam led me in a slow dance.

Laughter mingled with tears….I was so overwhelmed with emotion and excitement at this point because I knew what was coming….

Right after the song ended, the blindfold was put back on and this time, we drove down the hill and got out of the car again.

Adam took off the blindfold and my yoga teacher and friend, Anna, was standing there in front of me!

She read another card and I started to cry….

But then we got back in the car and I was driven to a beautiful rustic barn on the vineyard.

When I stepped inside, all my friends were there, beautiful food + drinks were set out on a long table and mason jar candles illuminated the room.

There was a projector set up and a video started running….Adam had actually gotten all my other friends and family members on tape reading more cards with reasons why he loves me…

In the end, 50 cards with reasons why he loved me were read and tears were streaming down my face. He had managed to videotape my best friends, my parents, his parents, my grandparents…..it was very, very, VERY moving. Lots of happy tears in the room!

The last video was our friend, Paul, who busted out his guitar and sang our song, Tupelo Honey. We started dancing and at the end of the song, Adam dropped down to a knee and proposed.

You guys, even though I knew this day would eventually come, it was completely and totally surreal. I started crying and our friends waited outside while we had a bit of private time together.

After about 10 minutes, Adam ushered me outside saying, “I’d like to introduce my fiancee — the future Mrs. Beaugh!!!”

Everyone cheered, we popped bubbly and took more photos together. I was completely elated…I had never felt so happy in my entire life. NONE OF THIS would have ever been possible without our amazing friends. We have the very best friends in the world and they absolutely made our special day complete.

We quickly packed up camp and drove back to Healdsburg, where we all celebrated with a big, fun dinner at SpoonBar…right down the street from where this story all began!

Then:

Now:

I can’t WAIT to marry this man that God has given me. He makes me want to be a better person and is a true blessing to me in every way. Wahoo!!

So romantic! Tell Adam he raised the bar for all boyfriends out there. I won’t tell my husband, as our story was a bit “less out of this world” but still special because it was ours :-). Enjoy this beautiful time. Finding your special person is just such a wonderful feeling. As you said, you know when you know. Thank you for sharing! Jenna, I just wanted to say congratulations! Also, I love your blog, I mean love! I have read it faithfully for over a year and tried tons of recipes, laughed (a lot), felt empowered, cried(especially today’s engagement story) and been introduced to so many new things. I truly feel like we are friends 😉 You have given me so much advice, unaware I’m sure haha, and today you have given me the best advice, to love myself enough to hold out for that amazing guy who will do ANYTHING for me, and also the hope that God has him somewhere and he is waiting for me, somewhere out there and when the time is right I will meet him. Thank you so much for being here for me almost every morning! Best wishes for you and Adam and a lifetime of love and joy.

    November 7, 2012 at 9:35 am

So… While I KNEW the plan for a while, had my own copy of Adam’s “proposal agenda”, had seen the gorgeous ring via Facetime, and nearly hyperventilated while waiting in Texas to hear from them afterwards, I smile through tears Every Single Time I think of the extreme happiness in their voices when I did get the call. And like most of you, these extraordinarily BEAUTIFUL photos make me cry each time I look at them and I can’t seem to QUIT looking at them, so I definitely have to keep the tissues handy!
Adam adores surprising the people he loves and it was so important to him that he succeeded at this ultimate surprise for Jenna. Their friend, Rocky, told me that he “executed everything perfectly!” and the evidence is in the photos of Jenna’s beautiful face. Even more importantly, the very evidence of their love and happiness is there and I am truly thankful to God for that. I could definitely gush for waaaay too long, but there’s one thing I’d like to say about both of them, and since many of you have known Jenna longer than I have, you doubtlessly have already figured it out: Adam and Jenna are 2 of the most REAL…most amazingly genuine people you will ever meet. I’ve always been so very, very proud to be Adam’s mom and now I am equally proud and happy to be Jenna’s mother in law to be! Love them so much!

Thank you Nancy for the beautiful thoughts and words. Just “ditto” for me! An amazing, beautiful occasion in the lives of two people we love so very much. I have never seen such love and pure happiness in Jennifer’s eyes as I did in the photos of her looking into your sons eyes. We are certainly blessed!

Jenna! I have already cried happy tears when I saw all of the pictures, and now I am crying again reading the story behind the pictures. Absolutely beautiful! I always knew that the girl who captured Adam’s heart would be someone super special. After all, the woman who he compares all other women with – his fabulous mom- is pretty spectacular, so I knew that whomever he gave his heart to would have to be pretty wonderful herself! Adam’s a great guy, and I am so glad he has found such love and happiness with you. Congratulations, and thank you for sharing your beautiful day with us. I can’t wait to meet you in a few weeks!

umm… he impressed me from the beginning when i thought he was just proposing in the woods because you both like to hike so much. THEN it just blew me away when he involved all your precious friends and family via wishes. HOW thoughtful!! i can only hope my current boyfriend involves my family and friends–they are the most important things to me (second to him, of course) and I think it makes it that much more meaningful that adam thought to have them involved. you two are two blessed, lucky people to have found each other! I do hope you plan to tie in wedding planning into the bog… i’d love to hear/see your thoughts and viewpoints. you’re too cute and creative to not share! best of luck! Enjoy this time–how fun right before the holidays?! guess he’s off the hook for christmas, huh?

WOW! I didn’t see this before…it popped up in those little picture boxes at the end of today’s post. That is a Norah Ephron-Nancy Meyers film. TRULY the most AMAZING proposal I’ve ever heard of. The most heartfelt. The most thoughtful, loving, and artfully composed. And most important….AUTHENTIC.

Really spectacular in such a completely loving way. BTW Jenna. I knew the minute I saw my husband, Robbie’s Dad, he was it for me. Unfortunately, he died young, his b-day is Christmas Eve. I still see those eyes. I’m still in love. And I know he still loves me up in heaven.

Congratulations!!! Wow. Laughing…in a good way!!
