When Four Miles Becomes 10.3

by jenna on August 8, 2010

So, in keeping up with the trend of unintentionally extreme long hikes, today Cindy and I ventured out for a little four mile seaside stroll. We plotted out a “moderate” trail that wrapped around the Point Reyes seashore and brought with us our cameras, some snacks and a water. We planned on heading out around one o’clock, after church, and getting back at three.

Somehow that gentle two hour walk turned into a strenuous 10.3 mile hike through forests, streams, rain, mud and fog, but who’s counting?

(I coveted Cindy’s ear warmer/headband thingy…it was cold and wet today!)

and then, 10.3 miles later, I ate THIS:

Entire post-marathon hike feast recap to come in the morning—trust me, you don’t want to miss this!

What beautiful pictures you took!!! Her yellow headband so is super cute.

Cindy August 9, 2010 at 11:07 am

Thanks! I got it at a boutique on Haight street in San Francisco this past winter. But I have seen them online. Its super comfy and keeps the wind off my ears. If you search for “knitted headband with flower” on Etsy.com they have similar ones.

Laura August 8, 2010 at 10:19 pm

It seems like you always get in unexpected bouts with nature Jenna. But pasta as your post-hike fuel? A girl after my own heart.

Allie (Live Laugh Eat) August 8, 2010 at 10:23 pm

Are those flower shots with your macro lens? Gorgeous.

Amanda August 8, 2010 at 10:23 pm

Another carb blow out? Oh Jenna you are too good to us! That is a looooong hike, did you celebrate with kombucha?

Hillary [Nutrition Nut on the Run] August 8, 2010 at 10:32 pm

Seriously, your pics put all photos to shame. Gorg!!

Love the Cali coast <3

Beautiful photos, love those marathon hikes/pasta finish!

Lindsay Perrone (goodiesgalore) August 9, 2010 at 2:37 am

Oh my gosh I just got SO nervous for you. In college I did an international work camp in Point Reyes. (I was the only non-international one and sadly, the only one who couldn’t speak at least two languages.) We lived right on the water and can remember how freaky those hikes were, what with all the Beware of Mountain Lion signs. Thank god you’re alive! Better eat something chocolately to celebrate.

Ellie August 9, 2010 at 2:42 am

What beautiful pictures, made me want to be outside instead of waiting to start a late shift at work at 2.30pm! Looking forward to the tale.

Jennifer August 9, 2010 at 8:51 am

Another Edinburgh reader! How exciting. California seems a lot more appealing than Edinburgh right now.

Ellie August 9, 2010 at 10:12 am

True! It’s soooo grey!! This blog just makes me feel that bit sunnier :)

Bec August 9, 2010 at 2:47 am

Looks like a gorgeous hiking trail, those flowers are so pretty!

Jessica @ How Sweet It Is August 9, 2010 at 3:32 am

Wow – beautiful shots Jenna!

Keri August 9, 2010 at 3:50 am

That ear warmer is so adorable and your pics are beautiful! I’m going camping next weekend! You make it look so much fun, so I’m excited :)

Staceyhttp://stacey-healthylife.blogspot.com/ August 9, 2010 at 4:01 am

It looks like from the views that it was probably worth the extra hiking.

Rachel (Two Healthy Plates) August 9, 2010 at 4:19 am

beautiful photos!! I love her headband/ear warmer too — wonder where she got it?!

eatmovelove August 9, 2010 at 4:27 am

Wow – you have all that around you within walking distance? Awesome.
Did you still go to a Book Club Jenna?

Summer August 9, 2010 at 4:37 am

I have to have that ear warmer! Where did she get it?!!!!

Heather August 9, 2010 at 4:37 am

when i first moved out to colorado i was stoked about going on a new hike…so my friend amy and i (armed only with one granola bar and 2 bottles of water) set out to climb Bear Peak in boulder. we thought it was only going to take 3 hours at most.

8 hours later we were hiking through a private pasture with cows in it because the trail signs had been turned in the wrong direction!!! needless to say we were pretty exhausted :)

Diana @ frontyardfoodie August 9, 2010 at 4:39 am

whoa it looks so beautiful out there though! I love a good hike but I don’t think I’ve ever taken a 10 mile one!

Marisa @ Loser for Life August 9, 2010 at 4:53 am

Wow, you may have convinced me to go on a super long strenuous hike now! Intentionally :)

anon August 9, 2010 at 4:54 am

you are GORGEOUS!

Chelsey August 9, 2010 at 4:56 am

I love the scenery! It is typical that a short hike turned into a long one! Hope you had a good time!

Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman August 9, 2010 at 5:23 am

I love that headband! I can’t believe how cold it was. Ear warmers? Long sleeves? Well, 10 miles like that is better than 10 miles in the 100-degree heat we’re getting!

Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) August 9, 2010 at 5:43 am

I’m loving your new lens and the photos that it takes, girly! You can’t beet a close up picture, sometimes. Gorgeous! 😀

amanda August 9, 2010 at 5:51 am

I agree, those are some beautiful pictures you were able to take on your hike. It looks like you a great time and also a great post meal.

jenna August 9, 2010 at 5:56 am

Nancy @ The Wife of a Dairyman August 9, 2010 at 7:09 am

Beth @ DiningAndDishing August 9, 2010 at 7:17 am

I wouldn’t mind hiking for hours in beautiful scenery like that!! Looks like a lovely way to spend a day :).

Heather August 9, 2010 at 7:22 am

That hike looks beautiful, can’t wait to read about the food recap!

Lauren @ louisianagrown August 9, 2010 at 7:24 am

Gorgeous photos! At least it was 10.3 unexpected miles of something beautiful? 😉

Jenny August 9, 2010 at 7:30 am

I love Point Reyes! My husband and I vacationed there last August and were in complete amazement of the entire seashore. I loved seeing your photos – they brought back memories of our cold, windy, foggy but beautiful hikes! Thanks for sharing!

lz August 9, 2010 at 7:40 am

Absolutely breathtaking. That photo of the orange flowers facing downward portrays beauty beyond words.

karen August 9, 2010 at 7:58 am

Love the pics! That headband IS adorable too! You rock Jenna!

Jenna August 9, 2010 at 7:59 am

Why was almanzo at blog her but not you!!

jenna August 9, 2010 at 8:02 am

I have no idea.

Liz @ Tip Top Shape August 9, 2010 at 8:10 am

That happened to my friend and I once. We were actually on a trail and walked what we thought was a moderate distance. Well, we ran part of the way one way and then walked the entire way back. It seemed to take forever to finally get back to my house! Definitely a longer path than we anticipated. At least you had good company (as did I)!

Wonderful pictures 😀

Amelia August 9, 2010 at 8:11 am

I really enjoy your photos and reading about your adventures. The scenery is just gorgeous! I hope that our adventures in Colorado will be just as beautiful…minus the ocean, of course.
Now I just need to get a better camera like yours!

Heather @ Side of Sneakers August 9, 2010 at 8:17 am

That hike sounds fabulous!!!!

Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin August 9, 2010 at 9:46 am

That scenery puts all the hiking trails in my area to shame! It makes me want to move out to Cali so badly!

Katherine August 9, 2010 at 9:50 am

Lucky you were wearing good shoes! I have the exact same ones and wore them on a similar unintentionally long hike in Yellowstone last month : )

Lisa August 9, 2010 at 9:55 am

What a beautiful hike!! Forest and beach! My favorite.

One time we did what we thought would be a short hike along the river in Bend. We took a wrong turn where we THOUGHT we had left the car. We ended up having to walk like 5 extra miles across the resort to get back to the car. LOL Oh well, it was fun!

Brittney August 9, 2010 at 10:38 am

I have those same hiking shoes :) LOVE em!

Bliss August 9, 2010 at 10:53 am

I’m sure I’m not the only reader who knits…Cindy’s headband is totally this pattern from ravlery : Flower Headband Earwarmer by Elisa McLaughlin. Super cute, I may just have to make it!
